TAMU Holistic review candidates Class of 2022

@MominPlano yes my daughter is leaning towards going to Blinn & enrolling in the PTA program with hopes to transfer after one year. It worries me bc it’s not the ‘traditional’ way but her heart really is in CStat and nothing can convince her otherwise. She, like all of our kids was accepted to other great schools…she has scholarships waiting & the schools want her! But… she wants A&M and is determined that they will want her too in a year:)

@tyra2k8 and anyone considering an appeal:

The regional advisor is not an admissions advisor and I am not sure how much access they have to your application file but I can’t imagine that it would hurt. The information I related was from someone’s personal experience and what they recommended. I am just a parent of a current Aggie and unfortunately, my knowledge is limited in some areas. In the past, the PSA and the appeals process has not been discussed at length, and I am glad that it is being done so now.

There was an applicant in class 2021 who shared her appeals process on the forum. She was offered PSA, appealed and gained full admissions to Mays. Her screen name is MollyKDolan and what she relates can be found here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/20341200#Comment_20341200

There is some interesting information related about students with too many DC hours not being offered Blinn Team and could be a potential reason some folks who were not in the running for full admit were offered PSA instead of Blinn Team, due to having too many college hours already.

@Ksaaggie91 - congrats to your daughter going to OU. Beautiful campus, school spirit, and education.

PSA decisons and appeal applicants, I have started a new thread for PSA and Appeals for information gathering etc.

Please share your thoughts, questions and information you glean about PSA and Appeals

@Thelma2 If that is true about DC credits I might lose my cool. They offer these for kids to get ahead and to think it could be the reason in part that our child wasn’t offered Blinn Team because of her DC credits is ridiculous. Those same credits will follow her to PSA I’d guess. Good grief. I did call this morning but by 8:20 (after 6 min hold time) I was asked for daughter’s UIN and our phone number so an admissions counselor could call me back.

Curious, where do you see what schools they are offering your child through PSA? I see the generic letter and the link to PSA on their website but no schools are listed in her AIS. I don’t want to accept PSA just to see what her choices are… anyone else having this problem?

@boysarebest Have your son considered UT in Dallas ? Their Mechanical Engr program is only behind UT and TAMU. Plus, they have just built a brand new Engr building opening this Fall 2018 that will house the Mechanical Engr department. I believed their engr department is up and coming and will only get better in the future. Very nice campus and dorm as well.

Whats the worst thing that could happen if you hit accept?

The list of schools showed up and she checked her first choice, Tarleton.

My daughter is also looking at Blinn for a year and her major is offered through PTA, but not PSA, and that may influence her decision. We may also try to appeal, there were some things that occurred during her junior / senior year that she did not want to go into in her essay as it is very personal and hurt a lot. She hasn’t decided yet if she wants to go that route still. I will update when she has made her decision.

@mikeinsugarland , right now he wants to stay a little closer to home near Houston. I tried to get him to apply to UTD but he wasn’t buying it, lol. He’s considering a transfer his sophomore year, so he might consider UTD once he gets a taste of being away from home and realizes it’s not so bad.

We hit accept so we could see the schools offered…some campuses would definitely be a deal killer so we wanted to see what we had to choose from to better make our decision. I figured we could always decline later.

My oldest did PSA at Commerce. It was not a hard decision since they had the major she wanted. It turned out to be a really good thing for her and I appreciated us not having to go through the stress of re-applying. After this experience I am really reluctant to consider straight Blinn.

Wow the DC thing is eye opening. If so that really stinks, and needs to be shared. My daughter has 18 hours of DC.

@boysarebest Understood … we are from Houston too and would like to see my son take the offer for TAMU Engineering at Galveston. But he visited UT Dallas and really like it there.

FYI, from what I read, just know that transferring to TAMU after his freshmen year into engineering will be very tough. Unless he stands out with his GPA, his chance will be slim because he will be again competing with next year incoming freshmen and transfers. If you go the UT Dallas route, if he couldn’t transfer to TAMU, at the very least he will continue his education at a very solid mechanical engr program. Something to think about …

I don’t know much about it’s reputation but we toured the UNT College of Engineering 7 years ago and it was really impressive to me. Worth a look . . .

@Thelma2 My son was offered PSA last night. He is leaning towards UTD since they offered software engineering from the start as well as a nice FA package. Will have to defer one semester though due to us moviing to Texas last December. We visited campus and seems good. New engineering bldg and lots of internships which is why you go to college in the end.

@aggieXdos The Dual Credit would not be as much of an issue with full admissions as it would be for Blinn Team. So, if the university was not going to offer a student full admissions, and in looking at other admission pathways and they see the applicant has a high count of DC hours, it would seem to be impossible for them to attend Blinn anyway, as they would already have credit for everything they would be allowed to take at Blinn and could not be co-enrolled. Team takes the majority of their classes at Blinn and a max of 5 hours at College Station.

@thelma2 - thanks for the DC logic explanation. I feel like there r a lot of these “things” that our particular high school counselor is not aware of, didn’t share, and/or shared with students who don’t think about ramifications. (AP classes are another area that I think can be helpful or can hurt.). Thank goodness my husband kept encouraging our “guinea pig” to retake the SAT/ACT to get her score up to automatic admit.

Sorry…I meant academic admit.

@mikeinsugarland I will take a look at UTD. My confusion with all of this is that some of the schools on his PSA list require an 880 on SAT for academic admit in the 2nd quartile. Utsa requires 1180. How can the PSA school be a better choice? Just seems like a school with a little more competitive admission requirement should be a better choice. I’m not a native Texan and it’s been 25 years since I started college, so this is all new to us. Seem a little crazy to me, though.
