TAMU Holistic review candidates Class of 2022

Is it weird that my Howdy STILL says “under review”?

@shanjohnson26 yes… what was your decision?

@shanjohnson26 D received a PSA offer a few weeks ago and her Howdy still says under review

@AggieMomhelp I got PSA on March 8th but my Howdy still says that I am under review.

@shanjohnson26 AIS is where TAMU releases the official admission decision. What is listed in Howdy doesn’t matter, because a decision has been made and released for you. Howdy didn’t update with any changes because the Howdy portal no longer applies to you, as you were denied freshman admission.

I will chime in ( just read through the results pages)… appeals are somewhat rare and you MUST fit the criteria to appeal it is stated clearly on the information.

Another option if you are top 25% by the END of senior year is: to apply for spring or fall 2019 and take a gap period with NO college courses (or the option is VOID). Retake the SAT/ACT to get to academic admit level and reapply. Many students drop academically for the final semester so often your rank will go up by the end of your senior year.

For transfers: contact your department you are interested in transferring to at TAMU. They will be your decision maker unlike Freshman admissions which goes first to admissions committees, transfers start at their major then go to admissions. Get the course list required - no they don’t waive courses - so you apply when you have the required course list rather than get auto-denied. Ask what they look for other than grades - some do prefer participation in EC, some don’t. Your SAT/ACT and class rank go by the wayside when you apply as a transfer – it is all about your college performance – clean slate – so take advantage & get tutoring for courses. FYI - grades do NOT say, A with tutor vs. B all by myself… check your ego at the door at get A’s.

Good luck to all of you! Holistic review is a tough spot at TAMU. You are basically fighting to get into 12-15% of the freshman class — the rest are automatic admits in recent years.

Regarding applying early, for holistic reviews unless you are recognized as a ‘must have’ it doesn’t change your decision – they first look for admission into the university then major – so don’t beat yourself up for a later application. If your major was full they would still take you, but offer your second choice major or pick another major option. You were just a victim of too many really great students in the holistic review pool.

Often there are wonderful students who are not offered admission as the top 10% rule fills up many slots by law (personally I believe academic admits truly EARN their spots, where top 10% is less so IMO). This is why engineering has a second review for admission to major. Almost everyone in Mays business is an automatic admit, academic or top 10% expect a Mays second review round in the near future as it is so popular (just my guess – engineering & Mays tend to mirror each other, one tries a new concept then the other implements too - math placement test, apply to general bus/eng then to major, etc).

I’m sure all of you will find your way - it just may be a different pathway than you anticipated. You will no doubt become more motivated to rise to the top of wherever you land, turn lemons into lemonade & best of luck to all of you!

jesus christ a&m must be on something.

had a 32 act, great ecs, 88 average unweighted, ib candidate, started business etc etc and got psa

for reference i got 37.5k yearly from smu. admissions at a&m must be dumb as hell

After much consideration my son decided to go to Oklahoma State instead of PSA. OSU has pursued him and gave him a great scholarship. We were afraid he would not get into Mays and have no doubt he will be able to get a degree…actually a double major from Spears. He also would have been waisting time because he has so many dual credit hours…now he can get right to it… It is sad that so many great Texas students end up going to OU, OSU or Arkansas. Go Pokes!!!

@skepticstudent SMU Cox has a big reputation, if that’s where you’re headed. Congratulations!

@SkepticalStudent you applied after the college you wanted into had already filled up and you skipped an essay. Sounds like you could have increased your chances by applying before early January and done all of the work on the application to increase your odds. I’m glad you have an excellent backup and money to go towards it as well! Congrats!

@skepticstudent or perhaps admissions saw the very late application, the failure to complete the 3rd essay and, by your own admission back in February, a general “slacking” on the application as an indication that you were not particularly interested in A&M or had other options (which clearly you do) and decided to give the spot to someone that demonstrated more interest? Best Wishes for your success at your preferred school of choice!

@skepticstudent - solid test scores. What class rank did they assign you? 2nd quartile? The application date was 1/10…are u sure they received your transcript in time since u said your teacher didn’t upload until then. Regardless, it sounds like u have some good options.

@aggiehope22 - I am excited for your son. I love the schools in Oklahoma and I’m sure he will be very happy there. Also, I concur that Oklahoma & Arkansas are very fortunate to be getting so many exceptional Texas students.

@aggiehope22 I agree that it is a shame the number of outstanding students ranked outside the 10% zone that Texas looses to OOS flagships. Our eldest 16%er DD did not even want to play the game to stay in-state and is happily ensconced at a school in Wisconsin and I doubt she will ever return to the state of Texas post graduation. Our youngest 14%er DD won the TAMU ho!istic review lottery. Had she lost…she would be attending any one of the multiple OOS flagships that thought she was good enough and accepted her with merit, making it within spitting distance of in-state tuition. Best wishes to your son at Oklahoma State!

@aggiehope22 OMG I’m so jealous right now for OSU. My D went her first year (should have stayed). My husband and I loved everything about it. One of the prettiest campuses ever. Sports/Greek Life/Student life are all stellar. He’s going to have a blast! Oh and there’s a cookie place called Insomnia Cookies. They open at like 11 pm and close at 3:00 am I believe. Daughter loved that! = )

Have y’all toured it?

Could anyone suggest me which college to go to ? I am international and got admitted to Texas a&m but Galveston campus for engineering, Penn state university park for engineering too! I have some otger good admits like UCD and UCI but am not considering them…! Which according to you guys is better Penn state university park or tamu Galveston the first year? So confused …!

@Dhg712 Go for TAMU Galveston and then transfer to College Station(ONLY IF YOU HAVE 52K DOLLARS/YEAR lying at home) otherwise go to Penn State.Slightly cheaper but almost equally good

@mojojojo23 since I am international, cost is not a big factor cz it’s not a big difference in cost! My main point is which has overall better reputation and opportunities? And is it a sure thing that after getting a set GPA they will give a transition to cstat? And is it true that peeps in cstat also have to go through same process for entering in a major?
And thank you for you response, really appreciated!

@Dhg712 Galveston is a different subsite for the same school. ETAM is the same there as for the cstat engineering students.
I haven’t researched your other school for comparison purposes. Maybe other posters can help there. Good luck! Please also check out the Galveston threads on this forum.

Thank you!! Could you share with me the Galveston thread link ! Thank you you much for helping me out…!
