Here you go, @Dhg712!

Thank you so much, it means a lot!!!

@Dhg712 That’s great! Even I am an international and cost is a big factor for me though! Yes, you can transition from Galveston to CStat with a set GPA. I would say it would be more difficult to get your preferred major at CStat than the students who are already studying there .

@mojojojo23 According to the presenters at Engineering Preview Day at Galveston last week, the A&M Engineering at Galveston students actually have a slightly higher rate of getting their preferred majors than the CStat students! The percentages quoted were very similar–the point being that there is no disadvantage for the students at Galveston, as far as the program selection is concerned. I had a long conversation with the Associate Dean of Engineering, who has been personally involved in the ETAM process, and he told me that the student’s current campus is not a consideration during the placement process.

@Dhg712 good luck with your decision, and check out the A&M Engineering at Galveston forum.

@GLYToo that is a great news to hear! Plus my friend who got admitted into Galveston Engineering said that he would have to come to CStat in the second year to take CS.as there is only marine engineering in Galveston

I live not too far from TAMU- Galveston. I had never taken the time to visit and had assumed it was somewhere down near the hospital or Bolivar Ferry terminal…yesterday I took a drive to Galvi for lunch and decided to drive by the campus on the way home.

1. It is nowhere near where I thought it was! It is actually off the Pelican Causeway on the opposite end of the island, sort of off by itself. (I'd want to be sure my student had a car if they attended there.)

2. There are far more buildings that I expected and there is lots of land around for them to continue to grow.

3. It is much nicer than I expected and there were a fair number of students walking about.

I can see it becoming a really nice campus. I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. I liked it more than Blinn!

@labegg Thank you for the encouraging report on TAMUG campus. I know that they have planned Phase 3 of their big main academic building complex (finishing Phase 2 now for Fall 2018), involving another big building near the main entrance. We have long promised our son a nicer school than his 40-50 year old high school, and I sure hope we will be able to deliver on that even next year.

My daughter got PSA (which she decided not to pursue, since she really wanted to be in C Stat), and applied to Blinn CC in the hopes of transferring to TAMU as soon as she is eligible. Today, however, she has received a mailer inviting her to consider RELLIS, which if I understand correctly, is like a gateway/bridge program into TAMU. Does anyone here know the difference/advantages of one over the other?

@kmcpty RELLIS is the campus that Blinn is utilizing for several degree programs. It is not a gateway/bridge
program like Blinn Team. In 2019 an additional academic building will open that will house several TAMU System Schools such as Corpus, etc where you can get a 4 year degree from that campus. It appears that if you accept PSA you may be able to start at the RELLIS campus if the university in which you are enrolling offers the course/major you want. More information can be found here including degree programs offered. http://www.blinn.edu/rellis/ or https://rellis.tamus.edu/academicalliance/
That may be a good option if your daughter wants to be in CS.

If your daughter does not accept the PSA option and intends to transfer, I highly recommend that you check out the PTA option as that will guarantee automatic acceptance to the major of your choice if you meet GPA minimums. Other than Engineering, most GPA minimums for PTA are 3.2. For PSA it is 3.0. If you do not pursue PTA or PSA and hope to transfer, it is a competitive review process all over again with the individual TAMU department making the admission decision.

In summary, if she can do the PSA program at RELLIS that would be a great deal. My son was offered PSA but decided to go to the Engineering Academy in Brenham instead.

We rec the same thing today. Didnt give it much thought as it said the options to get your 4 year degree was at the satellite regional campuses. College station wasnt listed as part of the program. Having said that, if one can go to regional psa approved campus at rellis,it would make it easier to transfer college station.

More info but if you scroll doown it does clearly state no psa classes will be held at rellis. Sounds like you fo 2 years at blinn, then if you major is offered at thecrellis campus, you would study there but your degree would come from the intstitution offering it. I can see how this would appeal to non traditional students.

@AggieMomhelp Hi there! I have a D who’s a freshman studying business at Oklahoma State–we love it too! She’s considering transferring to a higher ranked Business school, but it’s hard to let go of OSU!! Saw your comment about your D who transferred and “should have stayed”. Did she regret transferring? Such a difficult decision–appreciate any input or advice you can give!

@BeKa23 She doesn’t regret transferring to TAMU, but she did enjoy OSU and was in a sorority, loved her roomies (they stayed in Bennett… I think that’s the name. It’s the one next to baseball field), but didn’t really like the town. Said there was nothing to do and hated that she couldn’t just pop home for the weekend. It’s 7 hours to Cstat so had to be a planned trip. Homecoming week was her favorite thing there along with insomnia cookies.

My advice… tell your D to really invest her time and energy into OSU as if she’s going to stay there all 4 years. Don’t be half in and wonder what you’re missing at home. Out of all the people we met her freshman year, she’s the only one that left. Everyone else has loved every minute of it. BUT… my D left home saying “if I don’t like it after the first year, I’m transferring”. So she really didn’t give it a chance having that mindset going in.

Best of luck and Go Pokes! OH… get your hotel rooms now for football games, hoco(you can’t miss this) and parent weekends. Such a great school. I’m a little jealous right now!!!

@AggieMomhelp Great advice, thanks so much! My D is also in a sorority & loves it. Did your D stay in her sorority at TAMU? That’s another concern, bc the sorority at her potential transfer school appears to have a completely different vibe, and she’s not sure if she’ll be happy there. Just wondering how your D fared in that regard and in making new friends.

We’re a 7 hour car trip away from OSU too, so I definitely get that part of it! Would be nice to be able to pop home, but not really doable for just a weekend.

Oh I totally missed that she was already there…oops. My D did try to affiliate here at TAMU, but totally different vibe here and she didn’t really put herself out there to find new sisters and they didn’t flock to her either. So no ones fault, just not an optimal situation for her. I’ve had other friends transfer back to tamu and pick up sorority and have had no problems at all. Depends on your D’s personality.

As for making new friends, she has but not a lot. Stays to herself and has people she knew from high school here so kind of gravitated to them. Her boyfriend just graduated from Tech so she spends a lot of the weekends visiting him. I would say as with anything, it’s what you make of it. If your D wants to make friends, she will. What school is she looking at?

She’s considering either TCU or SMU. As far as I know, there aren’t any friends from HS at either, so she will have to make an effort on that end. We’ll see how this plays out but I think she’ll be OK whatever decision she makes. So glad your D is enjoying TAMU and thanks for the input!

i think i read this year about 4,000 blinn-team offered

@dallasaggie Congrats! It’s very exciting!!

For those of you with current Aggie engineering majors, do any of you have kids who went to Galveston the first year for engineering? I am trying to connect my son with a student who can answer his questions about their time at the Galveston campus and the ETAM process. I feel like it would be very helpful for him to speak one on one with a peer.

If anyone happens to have a Tech engineering major, it would be helpful for him to speak to them also.

This decision has been tough!

Hi,I don’t mean to derail, but if your son does go to TAMU for econ, he could do the TRIPP program in Mays. It has 3 paid interships built into the program and 100 % job placement. He can apply sophmore year…it is an extra year of classes and 3 internships. Lots of ECON majors do well in this program. http://mays.tamu.edu/department-of-finance/trip-overview/
