My son is looking to pursue Electronics engineering and has shortlisted two from multiple acceptance he has got 1) ASU and 2) TAMU. With TAMU he has admissions in to San Antonio for the first year and based on his GPA can get in to college station. Would like to get some views from parents who have been through similar journey of starting with San Antonio and then moving to college station. Is this a better choice compared to getting directly in to ASU. What are the key considerations. Thanks in advance
Net price of each? Affordable?
What major?
Note that some engineering majors at Texas A&M are highly competitive and unlikely to admit applicants in secondary admission (ETAM) with college GPA below 3.75.
Of course, another option is to attend Texas A&M San Antonio and stay there until graduation, if the desired major is available there.
@ucbalumnus - he is looking to do Electronics Systems engineering. Price is not a consideration at this stage.
The purpose of getting in to PSA at San Antonio is to eventually get in to college station (obviously he needs to strive to get the prerequisite GPA ). That is the big IF right now.
With ASU he has a guaranteed seat at the main campus. Hence the dilemma. Will he be at a disadvantage if the freshman is at a smaller campus? Coping up later at the main campus…
Texas A&M College Station has electronics systems engineering technology, which is a less theoretical major. A student who wants to do engineering of this nature would choose electrical engineering.
According to the chart in ETAM for Class of 2026 - #79 by ChellD , ESET had a 100% admission rate in Spring 2023, while EE had a 91% admission rate for those who did not meet the 3.75 auto-admit GPA in Spring 2023. So it is likely that the main hurdle is earning a 3.25 college GPA to transfer from San Antonio to College Station.
Texas A&M San Antonio has ESET but not EE for majors. Arizona State has EE but not ESET/EET.
@ucbalumnus - thanks indeed for the clarity you have been providing. I perhaps oversimplified by stating electronics engineering…let me detail it out further.
What he has opted for at ASU is Engineering Electrical systems, BSE. He is more inclined with collaboration between design and build solutions for the real world problems.
At TAMU he applied for Computer Engineering (not computer science ) and when was offered at San Antonio, he applied for Electronics Systems Engineering Technology.
Would like to hear your views… thanks in advance
Note that ASU EES is ABET accredited as general engineering, not electrical engineering, and is housed at the Polytechnic campus rather than the main Tempe campus.
Yes. Aware that it is not in the main campus but the polytechnic one as they don’t offer this major at the main campus. Do you see a concern with not having ABET accreditation for electrical engineering? Sorry I am new to this and hence asking.
Perhaps the question is, does the student want:
- Electrical engineering
- Engineering (Electrical Systems) (the major at ASU)
- Electronics Systems Engineering Technology
- Computer Engineering
Would advise going through the courses and curricula for each major to get an idea of what appears most interesting and suitable. Of course, also investigate ETAM at Texas A&M College Station and the change-of-major criteria at ASU.
