Target credit/debit card security breach

This is the alert posted on the website of our credit union:

Unfortunately, Ds used my credit union debit card at Target the day after Thanksgiving. I’ve been monitoring my account, and nothing suspicious has come up yet. Am leaning towards the do-nothing-now, and wait it out option, but may change my mind.

nj2011mom – re Dealing with Wells Fargo… My DD used her WF debit card at Target within the breach window. We requested (read ‘insisted’) that she call WF on Thursday night to have a new card issued. She was also unconcerned about the situation and thought they wouldn’t even know anything about the Target breach. lol But she did oblige and made the call. The CS rep informed her that very few of their accounts were breached, they are monitoring the situation closely, and it’s not necessary to do anything at this time, but that they could issue a new debit card if she really wanted them to. Yes, please. Her new card is on its way. The phone call was much more convenient than trying to get to a local branch.

“And to provide guests with extra assurance, we will be offering free credit monitoring services. We will be in touch with those impacted by this issue soon on how and where to access the service.”

I was glad to see they are offering free credit monitoring, have been offered this following other breaches and it helped to monitor going forward as the charges may not happen immediately.

I NEVER go to Target in our town. But the weekend after Thanksgiving, I was helping my sister-in-law move to Daytona Beach, so I accompanied her to the store in that town. While there, I bought a couple of things and put the charge on my Visa card. GRR! I have so many of my bills automatically charged to my card that I really don’t want to get a new account number. I guess I’ll just keep an eye on my account activity.

Here’s something about this I hate–in order to check your charges online, you have to agree to online billing. Call me old-fashioned, but that’s something I’m not comfortable with.

So, as a result of something that Target dropped the ball on, I either do something I do not like doing, or I wait almost a month for my test snail-mail Target bill.

If only I didn’t like Target so much, other vendors would be VERY attractive right now.

You can call the 800 number on your Target card and check balance by phone.

MADad - I’ve had online access to my RED card for a number of years and paper billing, but maybe things have changed. Every time I go online, I am asked to “click here to go paperless”.

I’m with you regarding online billing. We tried that with Sirius Radio and found that the new owners of 2 of our traded in cars were enjoying service thanks to Sirius automatically renewing the subscriptions with our “on file” credit card.

My bank told me that their security company informed them that all of their debit and credit accounts are safe. Not sure how they can be so sure…

I am trying to remember if I purchased my daughter’s present on the 26th or 27th of November and hoping it was the 26th. She called and told me she’d fallen in love with something she saw that was unavailable online, called my local store and was told they had it. Since all I have is a debit card, I’m a tad nervous…

Call your bank and have them check your charges to see whether you purchased on Nov 26 or 27. They can readily do so and let you know so you can decide what you want to do. You can also ask them about other charges on that card since that original Target one, just to be sure they all sound like yours. That’s why companies have toll-free customer service–let them earn their wages and call them.

Kajon, oh the memories of cancelling our Sirius subscription! What a hassle that was…

My friends went Target shopping yesterday, got their 10% discount, decided not to use any credit cards and paid cash. Said that they saw many others doing the same. I think it is safe to use credit cards at Target now, but as my grandpa used to say, lightning could strike the same stump twice. :)

I’m not sure either. If you used your card during the window, your info IS out there. By “safe,” what they probably mean is that there are no bogus charges – yet. Your bank and their security company can’t assure you that your info will never be used.

It sounds like at least some banks are resisting cancellation/re-issue of these cards. Mine tried very hard to talk me out of it, assuring me that my account would be monitored carefully, and urging me to check my account every single day, something I’ve never done, and don’t want to start doing. I get it – the cost of re-issuing a card x 40 million = quite a chunk of change for the banks to absorb. I hope they sue Target to recover that cost.

I set up online banking on Friday, for the first time in my life. I also resent that Target’s laxness forced me into doing it.

Flossy—

Tried the 800 number on the back of the redcard several times–there are probably hundreds of thousands trying to do the same thing–nothing but busy signals.

Went to Target the other day.

Used my card.

Not terrorized or traumatized by this event.

Will still go to Target.

Merp.

Two sleazy moves:

10% discount over the weekend. Even with the discount Target is still making gobs of money and this is just a stunt to increase sales. Shame on Target.

Signing up to check your redcard online requires you to accept online billing. Again, saves them lots of money, not having to mail paper bills. I can check my other credit cards online without accepting online billing. Poor move, Target.

WE SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO SUBSIDIZE THEIR MASSIVE SCREW-UP

I’m disgusted. I’m away from home right now, and can’t easily change my debit card. I just called my husband, and he will see what he can do. Thank goodness I’m with my family…I guess I can borrow money if needed (if my bank suggests shuttering this current debit card).

Like Kajon, I have online access to my Target account and still get paper billing. MADad, see if you can bypass the paperless billing sign-up. Still, sometime last week, the online account access was down.

Three class-action lawsuits were filed against Target. [Target data breach spurs lawsuits, investigations](Target data breach spurs lawsuits, investigations)

Unfortunately, this happened to us too.

Hit! H was reviewing the accounts today on line and found a $333 charge from Home Depot.com dated Christmas Eve. Called citibank to report it and my new cars is on its way. Glad I did my returns yesterday!

Have pleaded w D1 to call Wells Fargo. Even texted her the number to call.

Our account is still clean at this point. I canceled my card. Got my new one in the mail yesterday. DH says we should start using our credit card for everyday purchases that I have always used Debit for and use debit for cash from bank teller machines only. We’re going to try it and see how it goes.

Without having read every post, I’ll point out that some of the credit cards that were stolen will not be used for days, months, possibly longer.

While the owners of the credit card are protected–if you see an unusual charge, you can be refunded–the merchant who sold the goods is SOL; the goods are gone, AND they’re hit for the refund you got. Not the bank. The merchant, who thought it was a good card.

I got our cards replaced yesterday. IMHO, every single card used at Target during that period should be cancelled and replaced. Of course, the banks have all kinds of disincentives to do that–and they won’t bear the brunt of the fraudulent charges.

D got a call from our credit union yesterday. She was told they had received a list of card numbers that may have been compromised at Target during that period and hers was one of them. I was curious as to why they didn’t call me, too, since I had also shopped at a target during that time. She goes to school OOS and used her card there. Maybe it showed up as a possible theft since she has an OOS bank account? Or is there a specific area where this may have happened?

Anyway, I am not feeling comfortable having to check my account online everyday so I am going to ask for a replacement on Monday.
