Target credit/debit card security breach

Any business that accepts credit cards over the internet must be in compliance with the credit card insider’s security guidelines. You can’t get processing without an audit. If you look around the website you should find the auditor’s logo. It’s one reason Square is so popular.

Target was in violation of guidelines in the way it stored data.

I received an email from Target saying my information may have been compromised. They didn’t say credit card, they said name, address, etc. Then they offered to give me free credit monitoring.

I rarely shop at Target. Did not during that period of time. Don’t have their credit card and am wondering how they even have my information. Especially my email address.

Does this sound legitimate?

They could have your info if you ever shopped online, used any coupons online, have a prescription there, or basically ever clicked on an add sent to your email. I think the news said name, address, email and possibly phone numbers may have been compromised. Do they email you ads?

Our local grocery chain was hacked. Got a new card in October. Target was hacked. Got a new card in January. Now I have a card with a chip in it. Much harder to get the info from. This is what they require in Europe and other countries. We need to tighten our standards. These hackers are from intl locations and they know the u.s. is easier to hack into. I feel sorry for these companies as they are victims too, but they all should now know to tighten the standards and get rid of the magnetic swipe.

Just did a search. Have never received an email from Target before. Do not get advertisements from them. Have never shopped online there or used online coupons, no prescriptions. Also, they used my personal email address which I only give to people I know in real life. I have another one I use for things like that.

I really, really want to know how they got my email address.

I got the same email. I have shopped online on gift registries, but not during this time period. I appreciate the email. I don’t have a Target card.

I got the email as well. I don’t have a Target card, rarely shop there since I don’t have one nearby. I did shop there before Thanksgiving before the breach dates. I have ordered from them online but not in the past year. I don’t get email ads from them.
Like 3bm103 I wondered if it was legit.

On the other hand…I do have a TARGET debit card AND used it 2x during the said buying period and I have received nothing from TARGET.

I told my credit union to stop any transactions but have not been able to actually cancel the card. Got tired of being on hold.

If you shopped at Neiman in December, your info could be stolen as well. Apparently, there was a data security breach at NM, too. I bought a pair of shoes. So far, not a peep out of NM.

Target sent an email providing the link for free credit monitoring. It asks you to sign up and then they send you an activation code.

Well…I DO and DID shop at target and got nothing from them…nothing!

Bluejay
The CEO was on cnbc this week and said there have been NO instances of breeches on target red or debit cards. All visa, mc, etc thru the magnetic swipe system. So you may be okay but better to be safe. They questioned him twice on that and he was very clear.

3bm103
They are not asking for info from you are they? Credit card to set up monitoring or anything?

Yes, I received the e-mail. I need to check later if it’s legit or not.

That’s probably why when I asked for a replacement card last month, Target gave me a card with the same exact numbers and security code. I asked for a new card again with new numbers. I received it a couple of weeks ago but I haven’t activated it yet.

There were in essence two breeches. One of visa, mc, Amex card numbers from magnetic swipe system. Another where they got emails, perhaps phone and addresses from another source, probably their email list or directory. 40 million cc numbers and 70 million emails etc. my cc company issued me a new card (visa with more secure chip) and I have gotten some weird spam mail from Europe (about the BMW I ordered???) which I deleted. DON’T open suspicios emails just delete. I know this was spam email from the tag line. And I haven’t ordered a BMW! I traced the computer back via Internet to rome of all places.

The email instructs us to go to this site. https://creditmonitoring.target.com/</a>

Looks official though.

I would think it is legit. Only if they are asking for more info would I suspect someone running a scam off this incident. The CEO talked about offering this also.

I signed up (had read that the offer would be coming). You do have to give your SSN and answer those strange questions websites ask to make sure you are you :-). After creating an account you can adjust the alerts to text/email you.

Pretty nice and free for one year. Thanks Target!

I think it’s legit but at the link the first piece of advice is:

Then they send an email with a link. It would be better if you could navigate to this site from target.com but in a quick check I don’t see a way to do that.

received an email from our main credit card today saying they are watching vey carefully and not to do anything now. H and I are pulling our credit scores this weekend and putting a freeze on our credit, something we should have done a long time ago. As for the credit card, I plan on asking for a new one but am not in a hurry as that part is not a big worry but the stolen ID is quite a worry.
