lol, daenerys, what is the purpose of education these days? I think in a lot of ways it has become a means to gain. To gain money, to gain fame, to gain status. While that’s hardly a bad thing for the economy, unchecked growth towards that direction will create a morally unhealthy and overly individualistic society. Maybe we need more true socialists. :D

Edit: lol, I cross-posted. I think being a poet’s awesome… the woods, the peace, the time to enjoy it and put it on paper… Except I don’t personally like English poetry. :P

haha i’m sorry. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t do anything in the realm of extra curriculars for college. I hate seeing people on CC who do that. They do everything just to get into princeton then they don’t get in and have to settle for a “lesser” school and are so dissappointed. Whatever,Ijustmeanlike, personally (my space bar didn’t work just there and i’m too lazy to press the backspace key) I’m extremely lazy. I do just enough work right now so my parents don’t get ****ed at me and I accept my grades and such.

but tako- that’s great. I really envy your drive and motivation. I can see you being like that teacher in that movie…um…Freedom Writers. That’s what it was. like, extremely inspirational and all. =) Good Luck!

Mintie, I think you’ve definitely got a point. I hate how we’ve become so career/professional-oriented nowadays. I hate even more that education is now seen more as a means to an end rather than an end in itself. Now socialism, I’m not sure about…but you may be on to something there :)

whoa this thread woke up. TAKO! look at your post count. 1111. very proud of you, m’dear. god i’m going to be calling you tako for the first week of TASP (and pronouncing it incorrectly). just remind me often and i’ll get it.

lol, you guys are so cute with your posts about whether or not this thread’s gaining momentum!

Concerning education generally not being an end though, I can definitely see why (beyond those who just want more and more and more): education is expensive. Especially for people who aren’t financially well-off, the potential danger of overwhelming debt is so much that a lot of times people go into the educational field not to enjoy it, but to get into a good (high-paying) vocation. Even for state schools, many people aren’t necessarily interested in “wasting” money in college if they’re not going to get a lot back in return (in terms of money, status, etc.) Which is why I say good for you for wanting to be a poet! XD

I think education was always a means. Very, very few people have the brilliance or the luxury to treat education as an end. Not that education shouldn’t be an end. It would be so nice…

And socialism isn’t so bad. You just pay A LOT of taxes if you’re rich. :D

tako, you need to read that book by dave eggers about teachers in america. it’s called, “teachers have it easy: somethingsomethingsomethingiforgot.” anyways i’ll bring it to TASP with me so you can read it. =)

whoa mintie, are you in the UT Austin facebook group?

roamorse: I am in the UT Austin facebook group, though I rather not mention my name since I prefer to be rather anonymous (I know, I’m doing a great job so far, lol).

not really. it’s actually really stupid. i mean, the subject isnt but this paper is. The format he makes us use basically turns the report from a research report to a bs report. So yeah, 14 pages of me saying the same exact thing without doing any research at all. It’s all common sense.

history of soil mechanics: soil mechanics has been a prevelent engineering discipline since ancient times. Whenver buildings had to be constructed, engineerins would have to fix the ground to make it suitable…blah blah blah. i just made that stuff up right now but that’s practically how it goes. there’s this one part where we have to talk about the future of it. That’s always fun. We had a highway enigineering report once so (my teacher believes in all those conspiracy theories so he loves this kind of stuff) i wrote about how in the future we won’t need highways since all cars will be mini airplanes. for this one i’ll probably put that in the future we won’t need soil mechanics since homes will be in the air. think the jetsons.

Daen are you on Facebook? If so friend me you are my new hero!!!

I want to be an Intercity High school teacher. Then become president, but not be the president who quits after a year.

Chicago hmm…
Last week I went to the College Consortium at Santa Clara Hyatt (I saw your entire school there including the kid with braces and dirtyblonde hair that we saw outside of English rooms)
Anyways Chicago was there and it was so disappointing. The presentation was terrible!!!

Anyways so my mom went to Chicago (Hated it but loves it and accredits all her success to going there) anyways she needs to approve the new Chicago because when she went there socially it sucked. (Just like in the 20s where the president tore down their football field and put in a library after they won DivI national champions) the president in her time was really anti-social. So she hated it there, but she stuck through it (as all the social ppl transfered off 1 after another) (She stuck through partially because she graduated her Junior year? (cause she had me))

Anyways she says she needs to approve of the new Chicago, because she is afraid that my socialness will be compromised by attending. Anyways the woman who spoke STUNK. she graduate 2005 and obviously was so Chicago, but she just didn’t show any of the schools energy or vivaciousness (w.e) in her speech.

So my mom and I asked her about social life and how it is now. Basically my mom owned her and knew more then her. And this little girl (who goes to your school Tako) asked about going to Chicago and then doing business. And the woman couldn’t answer her question, so my mom did (who is in business now :-P)

Yea so basically thats my Chicago story… I LOVE UNCOMMON APP though

And wow, everybody went! I had to study for SAT IIs (which I didn’t even end up doing, ha ha. Instead I went on Facebook and CC and AIM and chatted.)

But that’s pretty crazy. UChicago…GRRR HOW COULD YOU LET SUCH A WOMAN KILL YOUR REPUTATION?

Oh well, less competition for me ;)

And I just found out that THE MOST ANNOYING GIRL EVER wants to go to UChicago. And I’m like NO THAT IS MY SCHOOL. MINE!
