Tasp 2007

This is totally pre-TASP TASP, hehe.

And so I’m not sure about this whole afterlife thing, although I do think alot about it (I have too much free time to think).

The explanation that appeals to me the most is the one you talk about, uber, that we are “recycled.” I think we differ slightly in that I believe that once you die, while your soul may “float” (for lack of a better word) around for a while, you’ll be reincarnated pretty soon. As in, there are a certain number of souls in the world and they just keep on getting recycled. Thus we’ve all lived many, many lives in the past but simply “forget” about our past life. This somewhat explains the reason why some die young in miserable conditions and others live forever, leading wonderful lives: you live based upon your past life and what you may have done.

But then:

The world population is growing. Where do these extra souls come from? Is God/the higher being generating them? And why does he feel inclined to do so? And how are the first lives of every new soul decided - lottery system? I feel like so much is dependant on chance…

Then I think about the heaven/hell explanation. So basically I would see it as…less a matter of your actions but rather as you as a whole. So judgement wouldn’t be a matter of - oh, you did 100 good acts but 101 bad acts, so you’re going to hell; but rather it depends on what KIND of person you are (kind of like the Puritan belief that people are already “chosen” to be holy).

But then:

How does everybody fit into heaven/hell? Just wondering, because that WOULD be an awful lot of people. And why would God bother creating bad people if he knew they were going to go to hell anyway? And how does God/higher being decide that hey - I’m going to make Jenny live a great life while I put Charles here under the poverty level in the streets?

Or if we delve into the - it DOES matter what your actions are:

But then:

As I said before, what happens to babies who never have the chance to do anything? What are they judged upon? And do people age in heaven/hell or at they at a constant age? Rather mean, isn’t it, for the people who die at 1 or the people who die at 120. But if we WERE to age, then essentially we wouldn’t be able to live forever, and so heaven/hell is simply an extension of human life, and not an eternal one? And how exactly do you judge a life’s worth of actions?

Or we have no afterlife whatsoever, and once we die we are dead. No more thinking (isn’t it scary? It’s like…when you’re sleeping you’re not aware of anything until you wake up, but if you die you’d NEVER wake up).

But then:

Why would God/a higher being give people the hope of an afterlife if there wasn’t one? A tad cruel, in my opinion. But I guess it’s not like we’re particularly entitled to anything…

And I’m sure there are other other “afterlife” explanations but I really do need to go study for SAT IIs.

Or tako, it doesn’t make sense because we’re simply not capable of understanding it. Just like a rat is extremely unlikely to understand chaos theory, perhaps human beings cannot so easily see the reasoning behind God’s actions/the spiritual laws of the universe.

…or it could all be a delusion created by humanity to escape the bleakness of facing a hopeless, random, and unfair life. (I, however, don’t believe that to be the case. Call me hopeful.)

And it would be AWESOME to do this for 6 weeks. XD

I totally get the whole instinctual beliefs in God thing, however, sort of zooming out to religion on a larger scale. Is it just me or does Biblical Monotheism just seem more rational than other types of religions. I don’t say this as an insult to other religions or in attempt to deface their principles and beliefs. But some of the rituals other religions participate in, even our own just seem to elude me. For example how in Hindu religion the wife traditionally burned herself to death on the pyre of her husband (Called Sati). But I guess when I say this I really am asking the question of what is religion? (Oh shoot)

Hehe, Corey, you know it’s a “shoot.”

According to dictionary.com, religion is:

I think that the first definition and the last are the ones that we are discussing, and 2 in terms of the general population.

i hate long posts. I’m always too lazy to read them.

I just got a private message from a moderator about how i’m not allowed to ask for homework help on this site. =/ I just needed to know the name of a story to use on my english final! Whatever i already finished that class yesterday.

i noticed religion…maybe i’ll read it when it doesn’t hurt to move (god damn sunburn. the sun wasn’t even out today!!)

Oh my gosh I better bump up this thread! We were TENTH, can you believe it? Shame…

And I found a new favourite article today :). It’s called “Caring For Your Introvert” and it describes me entirely so I have fallen in love with it. I like things that describe me.

Actually, I don’t think it entirely describes me, never mind.

That’s me ^^ at certain times. I’d say about 50/50 - half the time I just want alone time, half the time I fall in love with people.

But I would definitely lean more to the introverted side than the extrovert.

HEEHEE that is totally me ^^ I am one of those kids who keeps all their anger inside and one day I will probably explode and do some serious damage.

http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200303/rauch</a></p>

I am an INTP (according to the Myers-brigg personality test) and I pretty much agree with it.

That’s me! That’s me!

But that is not me :frowning: I am an extremely emotional person, bummer.

Perhaps I am just such a quirky person that nothing can define me perfectly.

What about you guys?

Ah, I love taking personality tests, even if they don’t work.

That’s an interesting article, tako!

Okay, so in the spirit of curiosity I took two tests–according to one I am an INFJ; according to the other, an INFP. Interesting…

http://www.typelogic.com/infp.html</a>
http://www.typelogic.com/infj.html</a></p>

oooh go here:

www.humanmetrics.com

we used it in a psych course i took at JHU and it’s the best and most accurate one i found so far. according to that test i’m ENFP

slightly expressed Extrovert
moderately expressed Intuitive
significantly expressed Feeling
moderately expressed Perceiving

P might as well stand for Procrastinating… “Deadlines are of secondary and not absolute importance.” uh, yeah. lmao.

I am a ENFJ

* very expressed extravert

 • moderately expressed intuitive personality
 • moderately expressed feeling personality
 • moderately expressed judging personality

and it says ENGJs are the best teachers o.O
Score 1 for Corey. I agree with the general survey but all the other ssociated links are, iffy at best.

Good Survey Roam, wait since when do you CC again?

^ NO WAY. …this thread is seriously creepy. I’m ENFJ too! XD

Go Corey! I think ENFJ seems very you. Although I typically avoid personality quizzes…

You, too, Mintie? I wasn’t very surprised by mine; I was and remain pretty introverted. Some of those questions on that survey, though, were really repetitive…I mean, you could tell where they were going with them

haha, just the jung typology test, cor. myers-briggs’ temperament survey is also good. some of the other ones i looked at were kind of er…

i remember asking my professor about the redundancy. they try to give a lot of questions that essentially mean the same thing, but worded slightly differently so the connotation is not exactly the same. this is supposedly to result in variances in the percentages.

for example:
“I take pleasure in solitary walks.”
“I normally prefer surrounding myself with a wide circle of aquantainces.”
“Whenever I spend a substantiate amount of time with other people, I need time to ‘recharge’ and ‘unwind.’”

anyone would know where they’re going with these questions, but extroversion and introversion have a multitude of “levels” or whatever you want to call it and they ask the same things in different variations so can identify with the ones that describe you specifically. i’m a “slightly expressed extrovert” according to the test, but i mostly consider myself an “extroverted introvert,” if such an oxymoron even exists. i love people, but anybody who knows me knows that i fit the characteristics of an introvert because i tend to get my energy and happiness and ‘sense of purpose’ from myself as opposed to the outside world. many people confuse "outgoing"ness with extraversion, but that’s not necessarily the case. i’m plenty outgoing, but not an extravert.

there was a book i read called “The Introvert Advantage” that was pretty interesting. tako, you could probably find lots of stuff in that book that describes you =)

hm, maybe i can do my pubspeak about introversion.

I’d be an “introverted extrovert” That sounds weird when you say it a lot. Extrovert. Extro-vert. Extra-vert?

And with the redundancy thing…I dunno. It’s just that on too many of the scenarios/questions I don’t really lean one way or the other. There are a bunch of other factors…or maybe I’m thinking too much into the question :P

Roam, that sounds like a good topic! You could title it “On the Merits of Being Shy” or something, and debunk all the myths of introversion…:D

Speaking of Pubspeaks, I desperately need to find a good topic. I’m all out of ideas!

That does sound a good topic!

I think I might do mine on the extremity and ridiculousness of college admissions because I can SO reference this site  and then I can talk about the book I used to write my critnal and everything! Yay!

And it’d be called:
Some cool punchline: Our Morbid Obsession with Prestige.

MORBID OBSESSION. Because that’s what it is  hehe roam.

But we’ll see, still a good month to think about it, wootness.

And I took the test you linked us, roam, and it turns out that I am NO LONGER an INTP. Now I am an INFJ, and reading over the descriptions it totally does fit me! More than an INTP, how ironic. I guess I change over time?

Now I am:

I do get my feelings hurt easily :frowning:

Eeee it says teaching or psychology are great careers for me :D

Haha personality tests are totally addicting -_-

If you’re going to reference CC, make sure you also mention this thread as the exception! :)

haha, i used to go back and forth between ENFJ and ENFP depending on my mood, but i’m definitely Perceiving. i tend to get anal about other things (besides deadlines) and assuming responsibility, which sways me to J occasionally.

HAHA. “morbid obsession.” we know where that came from. =D

oh, daen, i’m actually not shy at all. lmao. that’s why i come across as an extrovert most of the time, since i’m so loud and talkative.

i was thinking of doing the pubspeak on a spinoff of the Stumbling on Happiness book just because i love it so much or something about how parents affect their children (remember that article in time about siblings and how siblings actually affect you more than your parents?), with references to that last chapter in freakonomics about how parents are actually insignificant throughout the course of their childrens’ lives.

and then i was thinking about doing my pubspeak on sexual selection and how Darwin’s theory can be applied to human beings.

oh, tako, make sure you read the descriptions by j.butt! (i know, the name is weird.) there are also relationships between the different personality types at the bottom, which is very interesting.

maybe i’ll do my pubspeak on Keirsey type relationships!

http://www.typelogic.com/infj.html</a>
very tako! =)

Whoa…a little bit of Social Darwinism, eh? (well, not really) I like the freakonomics thing, though! That sounds terribly interesting.
