Hey @TASP2019SCAM,

Fellow 2019 UMich TASPer here. I also disliked the program a lot, but for different reasons. I really liked the other students, even if people (including myself) were pretentious at times and even though there was cattiness and relationship drama.
I thought the leaders and the whole structure of the program were awful. People were constantly shut down for asking questions, we all signed a contract at the beginning effectively agreeing not to ask difficult questions in class, and conversations about ideas were shallow and mediocre because almost everyone had exactly the same opinions on everything. We were subjected to hours-long sermons of the proctors’ political viewpoints and punished if we challenged weak arguments or pointed out hypocrisies.

Every single element of the program enforced conformity rather than encouraging independence or diversity and stifled critical thinking rather than encouraging learning. It was closer to an average day in George Orwell’s 1984 than an intellectual summer camp.

I’d also call it a scam and strongly encourage anyone considering applying not to waste weeks of your life having your individuality crushed, your independence stolen, your faculties of reason squashed, and your chance to learn burnt on the altar of compliance and uniformity.

Why else did you find it awful?
