TASP Decisions

What people aren’t going for their transcripts? Sheez…I am not going at all

Just a side question, does TASP ask for additional scores like the SAT IIs? If so, what were some of your scores like on what tests? :p

SourApplezz, as you probably know, the TASP apps. are sent out based on high PSAT scores. They don’t require any additional scores (I hadn’t even taken the SAT at the time).

although, even if you have a terrible psat, you can actually still download the application from the website.

Aww zetsui, be nice. I think it is to be expected that people on a message board devoted almost exclusively to college admissions have quuestions like mine. Further, I must admit that your reasoning (“what you do and where you go before college cannot decide the decision for college. It’s like asking whether you put down B for #4 on the SAT, how will it affect your score? It won’t”) leaves me totally lost. I would argue that what you do and where you go before college can do a lot to decide the decision for college, but I could be wrong.

And of COURSE I’m not going to tasp “for” college. Tasp is way, way better than that.

Anyway I’m really sorry if I offended anyone by asking that and I sure won’t again.

THREE WEEKS!!! I cannot stop being psyched.

^ you really shouldn’t apologize. tasp will help not only in college admissions (as someone else already established) but also in terms of alumni connections which we’ll have for the rest of our lives. so yeah, itll be fun. :-)

I am incredibly excited about attending TASP this summer at Cornell, but I’m worried that there isn’t more communication between us. Is there another place people are talking about TASP or just getting to know each other (perhaps a livejournal or mailing list)?

guys im really excited but kind of bummed too. I was told bringing a laptop was a good thing, yet my idiot brother broke the screen and I cannot afford to repair it. Do you think I will be in deep need of a laptop? I can spend all my money and argue with my parents to get a new one, but should I? Tasp Alums any opinions?

I’m happy to share, buddy…

i have a mailing list that our factota set up for us

RichardCory - You should email your factota about this. At the very least, they’ll be able to set up an email group or give you everyone’s contact info so that you guys can set up a livejournal, wiki page, or some other mode of communication.

Zetsui - Most TASPers don’t have laptops, so you should be okay. You’ll have access to the libraries and computer labs at the university you’ll be at, although you’ll only be able to stay at them until a certain time in the evening (the curfew varies from TASP to TASP). There will be a few computers at the house that you’ll be staying at. I’m not sure about most locations, but I know that Cornell’s house has like six computers available, and they’re only a couple minutes from computers on campus.

In general, I recommend bringing a USB flash drive (aka jump drive), which will make things easier when you’re working on papers.

how does TASP pick who gets to go? i’m thinking of applying next year, so what does the application require (teacher recs, grades, etc.) ? thanks for your input.

The application basically requires a single teacher rec., high school transcript, and responses, in the form of essays, short answers, and a booklist, to 6 questions (which I’m guessing don’t vary from year to year, go to the telluride association website to see them), as well as the usual information about awards, EC’s etc.

An applicant is chosen to be a finalist based on this material, at which point an interview is arranged which usually revolves around the topics raised in the application essays. I may be wrong, but this selection of the finalists seems to be very heavily based on the answers to those 6 questions, since all applicants probably receive glowing recs and have high grades, and I didn’t have any impressive EC’s but was accepted anyway. After this, the whole application is evaluated, with the interview taken into account, and the lucky 80 or so TASPers are chosen.

Remember, I’m just a UMich TASPer '05 to-be, (claret quilty, I know what you mean, CAN’T WAIT! haha :D) so take don’t take what I say too seriously.

I’ll post my offer again: I’m going to be in Ithaca all summer. If anyone wants to hang out for a little, commit some crimes, or ease my boredom, feel free to send me a message.

I was just kidding about that commit some crimes part, for all you serious bastards out there. I can run from the cops faster than you can anyways.

ieatglue,

give me your screen name.

'05 TASPers take note: TASP is truly meant to be a “semi-monastic” experience–the whole point of the summer is to have an intense experience in intellectual life and limited self-government within the TASP community. You should not be running off to socialize with other people (summer school students etc.) who happen to be on the campus where your program is held. It may seem weird to those unfamiliar with TASP, but this really is key to the success of the program, and your success in the program. The TASP community should be your focus during the summer, to the exclusion of social interaction with other College Confidential folks… or anyone else.

if you have only like a 3.5uw gpa, would be most probably rejected?

even if you have had straight A’s junior year, but just a bad freshmen year?

Jason: Admission to TASP depends almost completely on personal qualities/passion and intellectual ability. GPA isn’t a significant factor, but your recommendations should display your academic potential and love of knowledge.

And are you currently a sophomore? Or did you already apply this year as a junior?

^Oh man Mindy…when I saw this thread revived I thought the results came and started freaking out.

Haaaa…
