Tax Question...

I’m not really sure if this is even the place to be asking this, but as I couldn’t find anywhere more suited, I guess I’ll try here. I live with my parents and attend school full time, and work half time. I pay for all of my college expenses, but am still listed as a dependent of my parents. As such, I cannot claim college expenses on my taxes (that I know of). Is there a way around this? I love my parents, and not to be blunt, I don’t love them enough for them get deductions on my hard earned money for college. Is there any insight that anyone can lend to the situation at hand? Any help would be appreciated.

Wait, YOU pay your expenses and your parents get the deduction? How does that work?

Maybe ask them to reimburse you for the amount of the theoretical tax savings if you were to deduct it from your income. If they don’t pay, they don’t get the deductions. They don’t get to not pay AND get the deductions. If the check you write to your college is in your name, I think that’s sufficient proof that YOU paid the expenses though. Ask someone from a local IRS office. It’s only fair.
