Tax question.

I recieved $3,155.00 in Financial Aid in 2009. I was told that I did not need to file any taxes because it was under a certain amount. The more I thought about it the more I worried that this was incorrect information. I am not a dependant and the Financial Aid was my only income for the year. Can anyone tell me if I should file and what forms I need to use if I do.
Thank you.

For Federal income tax if your income is less than $9350 (assuming you are single not a dependent) you owe no Federal tax and don’t need to file.

You will have to check for your state.

That’s assuming, of course, your financial aid would even be considered income. This is a somewhat complicated topic. I believe if you are undergrad and you pay at least that amount in tuition, it is not income at all. If you are a grad student, it is trickier.
