Tax refund - Good news / Bad news

The good news? I got my 2014 state tax refund check in the mail today! WOW! $2486.

The bad news? I HAVEN’T FILED MY 2014 TAXES YET.

Arrgghh. Now I’m reading all kinds of stories about Intuit’s possible breach and that this is not an isolated problem (http://www.wsj.com/articles/fraud-alert-what-turbotax-users-need-to-know-now-1423847170)

I have no idea whether a federal return has also been filed on our “behalf”. It’s Saturday, and Monday is a holiday.

Interestingly, I’ve used Turbotax for years but do not have an online TT account. I just use the desktop version. I haven’t e-filed my state return through TT, I either mail it (if I owe), or use the state’s online portal to enter the amounts. I can’t even remember if I’ve ever e-filed my federal return, since we usually owe and I just mail everything at the last minute.

Anyhow, now I’ve been on hold with Intuit for over an hour. Wonder how THIS will turn out. Anyone else affected by this?

Y’know…??? Ugh.

Something in the crook’s scheme didn’t work in that you got the check. That’s probably good news. Filed my federal Thursday and it was accepted so that’s a relief. Will file my state today through their free e-file, holding my breath, given the reports of state problems.

Oh brother! This state is so friggin cheap, my first thought was that this was a HUGE refund. We usually have to pay!

Love AD’s comment. Poor crook…the check didn’t get mailed to him…but if he got THAT large a state tax refund…gotta wonder what the Feds plan to send. Try to get that one broken off at the knees!

AD…our cheap state doesn’t have free efile…at least not that I’ve found!

Poor crook is right. I can actually log into the state DRS’s website to view the return and can see that one “person” had full year income of $40,000 (exactly! What a coincidence!) and the other had income of $45,000 (exactly! can you BELIEVE it??)

Thumper, we usually pay too, or get a piddly amount back.

I had acually stopped at Dunkin’ today and surprised H with a Dunkaccino for a Valentine’s present. He said “Hey, I have a present for you too! Look on the table!” Somehow I think he got the better end of the deal.

No state tax… I am not moving out of WA. I would rather pay higher sales taxes and property taxes than add another tax filing nightmare!

OP, hope the headache will be over for you soon.

What state is this?

Connecticut.

I’m not sure that the state problem will translate to a problem filing the federal. They are independent transactions and it seems the crooks have found the states to be easier targets this year. We have to attach a copy of the fed return, either paper or pdf, to our state return but a crook can dummy up a fed return for that purpose.

Many, if not all, states have fraud detection programs they run against submitted returns. I would think such a program would flag a return with a bunch of round numbers like the OP reported.

I file with round numbers.
Always have.
Not when adding income or interest, but with expenses.
I am trying to get started on my taxes- but it looks like the two programs I use most often TurboTax & TaxAct, both are having issues this year.
TurboTax now requires a premier version to use certain schedules and some people are having trouble with TaxAct not submitting their payments to the govt.

EK…you can only file with round numbers if that is your actual income. If you earned $43,000, you can’t just decide to put $40,000. What are you talking about?

I round my expenses, not income.
I actually don’t round the numbers, I just drop off the nickels & dimes.
It really strains my eyes to read the numbers, and by skipping the cents on expenses, it saves me some squinting!

You better be rounding down

By round numbers I meant to an even thousand. That’s going to be quite rare especially for multiple entries. It seems like a dumb crook to do that.

Also a dumb crook since I have the $$!! BTW. Still on hold with Intuit, two hours and twenty four minutes. I wonder how long I can be patient. After all, my call is important to them, and they will be with me shortly.

The absolute first thing I would do once you hear the first word of a live human on the phone is ask for their name and employee ID number, then give them the number where they can reach you if you get disconnected and tell them you will expect a call back within one minute if you get disconnected.

I wish I did that. I DID have a live human being on the phone who put me in the queue for the Fraud department. He put me on hold and came back to make sure I was there a few times, then said it was going to leave me in the queue and it would be 5 or 10 minutes. That was about an hour ago (maybe more) I think I’m about to hang up and go back to the beginning again.

I’d get in touch with the state too.

2 hrs 24 min… You are a saint.

I have had better luck with live chat.
Does it cost anything to set up an online acct?

Do they have anyone answering phones?
