Taxable State of Residence for Adult Student

I am 73, widowed, retired and returning to college. My permanent residence (MS) is not in the state of my college (LA). While living at college (LA) 8 months of the year, my home in MS is unoccupied. For Federal and State tax purposes, can I maintain MS as my permanent residence?

That’s an interesting question! Have you asked a tax advisor at your campus?

There are some parents who are accountants and tax advisors who answer questions in the financial aid forum, you could go to that forum, and scroll down to see if any have covered this kind of issue.

I think that you stay a MS resident even if you wanted to become a LA resident. If you attend a state school, you don’t become a resident of that state since you are only there for school.

If you vote, own property, live/intend to return to MS that should be your state of residence. You are attending school in LA while living in MS.

Where do you social security checks go? Hopefully your bank in MS.
