TBP and HKN GPA Cutoffs

Are they based on cumulative or just tech?

i think hkn is >= 3.9 and tbp is >= 3.99

ill check with my friend hes realy smart

For HKN, the top quarter of junior EECS and top third of seniors are eligible… a couple years ago the cutoff was around 3.4 or 3.5. For TBP, it’s the top eighth of juniors or top fifth of seniors… most recent info I saw had that at 3.9 and 3.7. So, your estimates are a bit high, whggha.

Couldn’t find any info on if that’s technical or cumulative… I’d assume overall, since there’s nothing indicating otherwise.

my cumulative gpa is over 3.8 (technical is just over 3.9) but never thought of joining those organizations.
not worth your time and effort. try to build some good research capacity/experience at berkeley.

bearfacts bro ur so smart!!

not really… i m not ‘so’ smart but i work hard and enjoy what i am doing. i worked until 2 am last night (worked15 hrs on a friday).

bearfacts bro Im so envious when i start taking clases in teh fall i wish ill be that good …u probly make 200+K/yr in teh future bro i salutes u

I enjoyed joining TBP because I got to meet a lot of kids that prioritize school work just as much as I do. The cutoffs are based on cumulative GPA, and I believe it is top eighth of juniors or top fifth of seniors within a particular major (i.e. top eighth of chemEs, top eighth of EECS majors, etc.).

Awesome! Thanks! :D

Bearfacts: Yeah I’m involved in research and stuff as well;it was actually the professor I’m working with as well as a ugsi I had at one point who recommended I join for the reasons singh2010 mentioned, as well as networking, resources, etc. My overall GPA puts me in a good spot, but technical was questionable.

On a somewhat related note… What about UPE?

Not sure, but since no one else commented… I know if you want to apply early, they only look at your tech GPA.

I joined TBP last semester.
The benefit of joining TBP is that you get to know new friends. But the drawback is the whole candidate process takes too much time during the semester. Consider that if you already have a tight schedule.
The cutoff for EECS (as well as all other majors) was about 3.91 (junior standing) and 3.8X (X>=3, senior standing). The reason for such a high cutoff is probably due to students who are actually freshmen and sophomore, but have junior/senior standings.

HKN is much easier. I think the cutoff should be around 3.8/3.7 (junior/senior).

Hope this helps.

Hey Bearfacts, when did you start programming? I feel like all the top EECS students were already experienced in programming when they got in.

since high school using c, java…
at berkeley i’ve been using c, python, lisp, assembly, perl and hdl such as verilog (cs150), systemvue.
