TCU -good for a non-Greek life freshman?

My son has decided to go to TCU for the Fall 2018. He will study Physics with a biomedical concentration. He’s on a pre-med path. He’s not interested in rushing a Fraternity. Are there lots of groups and clubs for him to be involved in since he’s not into the whole Greek Life. I’ve read, the campus has a high concentration of Fraternities and sororities. He’s a very social person and loves meeting new people, but at the same time very focused on his academics. He was Student Body President at his High school this year. He’s in the STEM scholar program and will live in the Honors hall.
Any input is appreciated.

TCU is Greek heavy. My son was similar coming out of high school and was invited to join a fraternity once he got there. We were all skeptical but he went through the process. It ended up to be a great experience for him. He went on to medical school and is just graduating going on to residency in the summer so it didn’t derail his ambitions. Your son might have some difficulty getting invited to social events without a fraternity affiliation so it will just be a different experience and a bit more work to find other social groups.

fall recruitment period makes it more difficult there to build those friendships off the bat. Many of the kids will be doing the whole new member process at that time.

No, I don’t think so, especially if he wants to be a social butterfly. If your child was a pretty young woman, greek life definitely wouldn’t be necessary to easily thrive socially. Frats throw all the major socials at TCU and the only people usually not invited are non-frat guys. Frats run TCU and they are very unfriendly to guys that are not in a frat or playing a major sport. It will be very hard for me to thrive socially without letting a frat beat the crap out of him … hazing and excessive drinking is really bad among TCU frats.

Also TCU is not really good in the sciences compared to another major university in the same county. He’ll be better of at UT Arlington which is only 15 miles east and way more affordable
