Teach For America 2012 Corps

Forgot to add: Cali here! :)

Yay Cali!!! But its stuff from different state teaching exams its only 10 questions so pretty easy. I swear I wake up Thinking about TFA and go to sleep thinking about it. Lol, is this normal!!! I need it to be January already.

I’m from Cali too!! Whee :DD

When did u guys interview? I interviewed on the 1st, hoping to get placed for teaching elementary in the Bay Area…

Can’t believe we need to wait a month and a half… ughhh

Yah I just want to know now!!!

And I think that my interview went well I was able to finish my lesson literally one second before five minutes and I was the only one in my group who had interaction everyone else just stood up and talked at us. I felt my one on one interview went as well as it could of but I’m cautiously optimistic due to my grades not being to high but Im hoping all my leadership positions can outweigh that negative.

I interviewed the 29th, in College Station texas, and Im hoping to get placed in Colorado Elementary or High school Social Studies.

“I swear I wake up Thinking about TFA and go to sleep thinking about it. Lol, is this normal!!! I need it to be January already.”

^^^^
I understand that completely I do the same thing Mookie. SO nervous!!!

I interviewed the 29th at LMU. I’m praying they decide they want to tell us earlier, lol. I heard this week is when they actually say we’re in or not, at least amongst the selectors, then the following weeks they place us.Maybe I was dreaming, but when I talked to my interviewer I said things like “when” I get my placement opposed to if, and responded to me with confidence, as if I was a shoe-in. Lol definitely reading too deep, but hey its the only thing I can hold on to.

haha, I think overall my interview went well. I interviewed at the Sobrato Community Center, San Jose on the 1st. The only problem I see is that I was too nervous and I know that showed in all parts of the interview T_T… I’m also a really shy person, so I don’t know if TFA would like that. (Not to say I don’t have leadership; I had a lot of leadership and extracurricular experience, but I just have more of a gentle leadership? LOL) But yeahh, otherwise I think I had an effective lesson, participated just enough during the discussion referencing the articles, and really showed my faith in the TFA’s mission during the 1-on-1… Aah, we shall see!

Mookie, I agree with you that they probably know the interview results soon after the interview-- within a week or so. It’s most likely the region/subject/grade placements that take so long! I wish we could know whether we were accepted or not sooner & then find out the specific placements later, LOL.

What were the regions you all preferenced?

I went Colorado, New Orleans, Seattle-Tacoma, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Mississippi Delta.

I really want Colorado but would be happy with anywhere including anything not on my list. I just want to leave Texas though.

My first choice/s would be anywhere in California, whether it be the Bay Area, Los Angeles, or the Sacramento region (bc I’m from here & I wanna stay as close to home as possible).

I also wouldn’t mind Seattle, Chicago, or Arizona… Basically California would be my first choice, & all the other out of state places are of equal significance for me. If I had to be placed out of state, I don’t really mind where I get placed. Although I’m reluctant to go to Las Vegas…

CantTouchThis, did u know there is a Denver Teaching Fellows program? I found it recently while researching other alternatives to TFA, so u could apply to that as a backup during our looong wait period for TFA if u really want to go to Colorado… And I know what u mean about Texas; I used to live there! haha

My Highly Preferred choices were NY, NJ, Philly, Baltimore, and DC, so I’m hoping I get as far away from LA as possible and get placed on the east coast. Lifeawaits, why no Vegas? Its close to Cali, I put that as my 3rd choice on Preferred.

haha, I just didn’t want to go to Nevada, although I’m sure there’s lots to do in Vegas. If I have to leave Cali, I want to go to a place where there’s a good school nearby (for grad school) in case I happen to settle there permanently (which I doubt but you never know…), haha. As of now, my plan is 2-3 years of service & then grad school.

Thanks for the heads up Mookie08, it was very simple! And I think we’re all pretty anxious to find out, so don’t feel abnormal lol.

Lifeawaits, I interviewed in Los Angeles.

Can’t touch this: I preferenced all the California locations and rest of the “West Coast” locations, along with Greater Nashville, Dallas, Twin Cities, Chicago, and Phoenix. Would be honored to teach in any of them!

Does anyone have any idea what they weigh more during the admissions process? I feel like I had a great lesson and interview, but my GPA is so-so. Maybe I’m just overanalyzing! It’s hard not to wonder though lol.

I’m pretty sure if you’ve gotten to the final interview stage, they’re not looking so much at your GPA anymore (since that’s something easy to weed for in the first round). I have no clue what the actual formula is, though.

And hello to my fellow Californians! I preferenced the California locations when I applied two years ago, but ended up in Oklahoma. Never thought I’d be here, but it looks like I’ll probably be hanging out in the state at least one more year, so obviously it’s not been a bad thing!

Thanks BookAddict! That’s reassuring :)

What has teaching in Oklahoma been like? What have been your biggest challenges?

Yes, Book Addict tell us everything!!! Also, if u could give us insight to how ur interview and lesson went, as well as your preferences and what u teach now  Gracias!

Hello! I applied during the 3rd deadline and I am on my toes!!! Ahhh waiting till January is seriously going to be very painful. I wish they would just tell us already. But I made the person that interviewed me cry so that should be a good sign :)

Yah I would be honored to teach anywhere. I almost want to go to new orleans the most and philly second now because its on the east coast, and I still like Texas think its a great place I have just been here to long I don’t like staying in places for like more then five years-ish.

And I hope the GPA doesn’t matter anymore I have a very low gpa but Im confident in everything else so hopefully Im a strong enough candidate. And I do agree that if you got to the interview its good news because they could of weeded out already for that.

Yeah I think since we’re in the final stage, GPA doesn’t really matter much anymore… People with low GPA could have been screened out initially, but we’re still here, so yay! haha

And siva562, it’s definitely a good sign that you made your interviewer cry. You must have had a touching story to share! As for me, I tried and succeeded in making my interviewer laugh a few times… Score! xD

Yep! Humor is always a good way to connect. I hope you get it and I am sending everyone on this thread positive vibes.

anyone know of / applying to alternatives to Teach for America?

Right now, I am considering Arizona Teaching Fellows but that’s it…
