That’s awesome that you are doing city year though and I wish you the best of luck! It’s a great program and very exciting! I am waiting for a decision on January 17th as well, right after my birthday and returning from competing in a national public-speaking competition. I won’t be able to concentrate on either of those things! Does anyone know if it was a good thing to be forwarded directly to the final interview? Or does that just mean your application was detailed enough?

buckeyemcp, I remember at the final interview, the interviewers said that we can still make changes on our regional preference form til some time in January… So I think we’re still allowed to make changes… Well, I at least hope so because I already edited and resubmitted my form, lol.

And Woozle, as far as I know, people who were recruited from campus recruiters were sent directly to the final interview. I went through the phone interview myself, which I’m glad of since it was really similar to (and a good practice for) the final one-on-one interview. But I guess it was good in that u didn’t have to go through & prepare for an extra interview? haha

hey you guys! i feel a bit late joining in on all the nervousness and posts but trust me i have had plenty of nervous feelings so far! january 17th is only 13 days away! what is everyone going to be doing to pass the time? i start an internship on monday and probably won’t be able to concentrate at all. eeek! has anyone chosen the mississippi delta?

Hi all,

I figured I’d respond to you all considering I was just like many of you this time last year. Trust me, if you don’t get accepted, it ISN’T the end of the world. Sounds trite, I know, but it’s the truth. However, if it is something you think you still want to do at least hope to get on the waitlist. I was waitlisted last year and ultimately they couldn’t find a placement. After a reapplication (as far as I know they extend to all waitlist candidates from the year before) I finally got in! I still have to submit my preferences though and I won’t find that out until everyone else does. What did everyone else put down as their regional preferences?

I feel like these next 13 days are going to be very hard to concentrate! Good luck to everyone and I hope we all get good news did anyone apply to law/grad school? I didn’t because all the programs I want require professional experience, but now I wish I did apply because I feel like Its TFA or unemployment!

LOL, I’ve been checking this CC Board every hour!..way to pass the time.

Woozle, I feel the same way. I graduated in May 2011 and am currently unemployed. However, I do have a “plan B” in mind if TFA doesn’t work out.

Icebreaker, yes, I agree that it won’t be “the end of the world,” but I will still be absolutlely crushed if I don’t make the cut…At this point, we just need to remain positive. As for my regional preferences, I listed Seattle, Memphis, Eastern North Carolina, Bay Area, Hawaii, Chicago and Milwaukee as my most preferred regions.

Hi Icebreaker,

When you reapplied, did you have to do the entire process all over again (i.e. letter of intent, phone/final interivew) or was any of your previous info. kept on file?

Everyone’s welcome on the college confidential TFA support group. and I don’t know about the campus recruiter means you go straight to a final interview. A campus recruiter looked me up but I had a phone interview. I was just happy for that opportunity, thankfully I have good phone skills due to working as a telemarketer for my school solicitating donations. I figure I only got a phone interview because my grade are quite low but hopefully I’ve overcome that.
And whoever asked about the mississippi delta I preffed it fifth.
Is anyone attending the Webinar tommorow at 5:30 about high need areas?

Going straight to the final interview doesn’t mean you’re more likely to get in, but yeah, just that they got what they needed to know from your original app. Being recruited from campus recruiters played no part in it. I was recruited when I applied two years ago, but still did the phone interview, which I was glad for, because as said above, it was very similar to the in person interview.

Socalgirl, I know what you mean. I graduated in May 2011 also. I know have a job but it isn’t something I love. The reapplication process was pretty simple. You just write another 500 letter of intent explaining why you have decided to reapply and what you have been doing since your last application. You also need to submit an updated transcript if you went through the process while still in college. If they like you, they accept you on the spot. If it is a hard no, I imagine they reject you on the spot. And if they are unsure, they’ll do a phone interview. They try to make it easier so you don’t have to go through the entire process again which was pretty nice. I wish you the best of luck! I know it is definitely nerve-racking.

So…

I thought I would be able to chill out but I couldn’t.
I am on pins and needles. I check this thread and the TFA website
every single day at least twice a day. I really didn’t know I was
this neurotic.

Anywho, my funding status changed yesterday. It changed from
“under review” to “complete.” Hopefully this is a good sign. I mean
why would TFA review my loan/grant documents if I wasn’t going
to be accepted?

I really feel like emailing them but I will try to wait until I hear from
them on Tuesday.

I also just submitted my application to Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Their Ed.M in Policy and Management is an amazing program. If I don’t
get into TFA I hope I’ll get into grad school!!!

Well, keep me posted everyone.

Best Wishes,

Siva562

So I’ve been following this thread for a while now and I just wanted to say that I’m starting to flip out too! I check my status daily and even had a TFA rejection dream a few nights ago!! lol. It sucks but at least we are all going through this together and hopefully everything works out in the end for everyone.

My transitional status hasn’t changed but I’ve heard that a change from under review to complete is promising :)

siva- was there a dollar amount that was changed with it? and complete is definitely promising!

Hey Icebreaker,

There were no dollar amounts just the change in status.

It says:

“Your application has been approved. You will be able to see your
award amount below after the notification date, should you be
accepted to the corps.”

Ugh I really do feel like they are taunting me :/

I agree with you all- it’s a great way to help ease the wait!

Siva, that’s promising from what I’ve heard! My status, though, has not changed

How are everyone’s transitional statuses looking?

Hang in there!

Mine hasn’t changed but I applied late (past the deadline for transitional funding), so I wouldn’t know… Also, if I remember correctly, Siva is getting an earlier notification, so it would make sense that her transitional funding status would also change earlier than ours.

I have a question. I picked some regions because I liked the grad schools that TFA partnered with in those regions for teacher certification. Do you guys know if we get to choose which school we want to study at for the certification if there is more than 1 grad school in the city? Or does TFA assign it for us, depending on which part of the city we are in? I’m just worried because I picked some regions entirely for one certain school I want to attend, and if I don’t get to choose which one, then I would rather choose to stay near home (and hence change my regional preferences).

(Of course, I realize that for the more prestigious grad programs, I would have to apply separately with transcripts, letters of rec, etc. I’m prepared for that. I just want to make sure we aren’t randomly assigned to a grad school for certification by TFA).

Hello all,

This is definitely going to be a long weekend for me.

And lifeawaits has a good point. I only think my funding
status changed due to the fact that I am going to
receive an early notification.

I also wanted to take the time to answer some of
lifeawaits’ concerns about school certification agreements.
Please take my comments with a grain of salt because
they are based on one experience.

So, I had a friend who applied to TFA and was accepted
to their Los Angeles corps. She was really excited because
the partner university for LA is Loyola Marymount University.
During her final interview she asked them if she was going to
be attending that university for her certification and they ensured
her that she indeed was going to go there. However, when she
went to Institute, they told her that she would be getting
certified through an online college (Argosy if I can remember).
She was very upset and ultimately quit the corps.

That’s just one situation. But, if I were you, I would email admissions
and double check with them.

Good luck everyone!

Siva562

Hello All,

Siva562, I am just as anxious (and excited) for you about the 10th. Didn’t look back through previous postings, but I think I remember one of your postings saying your interviewer was brought to tears and very touched by your interview?.. That is great.

What if it was the other way around?..I actually cried a little in my interview and she offered me a Kleenex…although I was very genuine and didn’t mean to become emotional, I’m not sure if that hurt or helped me. I still keep thinking of all my answers and how they could’ve been better or if what I was trying to convey actually came across the way I intended…(sigh)…this is absolute torture.

Thank goodness for this support team.

Lifeawaits, I also applied for transitional funding past the deadline and my status still says “under review” as well. I believe those who applied late will be notified of dollar amounts AFTER they are accepted into the program.

Hello fellow Girl from SoCAL and TFA App supporters,

Socalgirl I think you have a great chance. I was reading
last years thread and they said the best thing
to do in the final interview is show TFA how dedicated
you are to closing the achievement gap and how
you embody the mission of the organization.

I really wouldn’t harp on errors or poor responses because
there’s really nothing much we can do to change our interviews.

But I am sure we all rocked it!!! I remember apologizing to
my interviewer because I was trying to be professional
but my tears wouldn’t stop coming.

What got me really tripped up is when she asked me if I would be
able to endure the amount of stress and hardwork TFA corps
members have to go through.

After that question, I just let everything
out from the multiple informational interviews I had with current
corps members to my background coming from a extremely low-income
family (I lived in a 2 bedroom apartment with 9 people and my family made under $10,000 annually). However, I ended up being the first one to graduate college, cum laude, with a triple major in Psych, Soc, and Human Development. It was quality education, and supportive teachers that helped me succeed and make it this far.

I told her I would do WHATEVER IT TAKES to see my kids succeed.

She was moved, I was moved, and we were both
sitting there crying. By the end of my rant she was finishing my
sentences.

I just want this opportunity so badly I can taste it, and I want anyone else with that sincere passion to make positive change to have this opportunity too!

Thank you for all of the positive and inspirational words. The 10th could not come soon enough!

Siva562

Siva562, thank you for sharing your story. I really admire your strength, tenacity and passion. I also came from a low-income background. I shared with my interviewer how college was the last thing I had considered since I was not raised with mentors who pursued higher education. Basically, joining the workforce to help out with expenses was very strongly emphasized over going to college. Not only did I enroll at 26 yrs. old (a little late in life when considering the norm) but was the 1st in my family as well to graduate with honors, in a foreign language nonetheless.

I believe we all have a great chance and Siva562, whatever happens, I honestly believe you will be successful at ANY career you pursue.
