Hi all,

Haven’t visited this thread in a few months… I applied during the first deadline and was accepted to teach elementary school in the Las Vegas Valley.

NerdGarcon - I’m studying for the certification exam and would love some insight on the elementary ed test! Did you take the computer version?

Good Luck Everyone! The wait is the worst part!

Awesome, Siva!!! Congrats!! Sucks you have to wait with the rest of us to find out your placement, though! What regions are you hoping for?

Hi All,

Ok, I am starting to panic now…maybe I am just overthinking things, but I don’t have much experience under my belt with regards to volunteering/working with children. I remember my interviewer asking how many times I have taught students in a classroom setting. My answer was I worked as a tutor at several schools and instructed small groups of students as a teachers aide (but this was not on a daily basis). I also participated in a service learning project during my freshman year in college (although it was required as part of my sociology course). So, I am wondering if my lack of involvement in community projects/advocacy programs will hurt my chances given that TFA really seems to stress leaderships skills…

Anyone know of a corps member who was accepted that didn’t necessarily have a lot of experience with internships/volunteer/outreach programs?

Georgia has its own test called the GACE but the content areas were Science, Math, Social Studies, and Language Arts. The areas I really really needed to brush up on were math and I had to learn about how to teach literacy. Do you have to take the Praxis exam?

Socalgirl, I think you are overthinking it. It sounds like you had plenty of experience working with kids (a lot more than me and I was accepted). From what I can tell it’s not about what particular activity you did, but more about your capacity for making transformational change, and being willing to do whatever it takes to help the kids you are teaching.

Congrats siva!!! Now hopefully you will get Placed in one of your wanted regions.
And for everyone else just a week to go hang on!!!

siva-congrats! you can now join me in the waiting game of no regional placement yet… i find out jan 17th too :)

winterbaby- was LV in your highly preferred/preferred?

NerdGarcon, since u seem to be the only one who can shed light on the certification tests and interviews, haha, I have some questions.

Do you have to go to the particular state u were placed in to take the exams, or can u take them in your own state (maybe on the computer)?

Also, do the interviews with the districts come before the induction, and about how many times do you have to interview?

I know I’m kinda getting ahead of myself when I don’t even know yet if I’m accepted, but I’m curious because I applied to mostly out of state regions, and I don’t know if I would like to travel from the west to the east coast 3-4 times just for the exams/interviews. Thinking of the cost for airfare makes me look like this: @_@ haha If I were to get in, I was hoping to take a computer-based exam in Cali & then go straight from the induction to my regional placement city to take the interviews & just live there for a while before school starts…

lifeawaits, it really depends on your region. If your region lets you take the PRAXIS, for example, you can do that in pretty much any state. I took the paper test for the elementary content knowledge PRAXIS in California, and that state doesn’t even accept the PRAXIS!

And as for interviews, you may be able to do them during induction or institute…or you may not have to do them at all. In Tulsa, we are placed after a collaboration between TFA and the district, with no interviews for schools required.

Oh, also, you have institute between induction and the beginning of school, and sometimes, there’s hardly any time at all in there. Also, you are often required to be in your placement city a certain amount of time before school begins anyway, for orientation/Round Zero (additional training). Hopefully, you’ll be placed in a school by then, but if not, you may have some time to do interviews during that time.

Lifeawaits, those are great questions!!

So, I went back to re-read the previous threads from applicants who applied during the 1st DL. It seems that those whose Transitional Funding Status changed from “Under Review” to “Complete” were, ultimately, accepted into the program. I also read that a decision is actually made a week after the final interview. So our fate was decided a month and a half ago??? …Then why the long wait?.. confusing…

NerdGarcon, you are probably right about me over thinking everything. I guess at this point, it can’t be helped. Just can’t wait til next week is over so I can go on with whatever life has in store for me!!

BookAddict, thanks!! You cleared up a lot of my questions. Seems like a lot of things are dependent on the placement region. And yeah, I knew there was institute after induction, but just accidentally interchanged the words… Oops :X But anyways, thanks! The process after acceptance doesn’t seem as complicated as I thought. :)

Hi Lifeawaits,

Yes, it really does seem dependent on region and institute. If you’re accepted, your site will reach out to you with comprehensive information. I had four different people from Atlanta contact me after I was accepted.
