Teach For America 2012 Corps

I feel bad because I have looked at past posts and there are people who are as adamant as us and they were denied. I don’t want any of us to be denied :frowning: we allllllllll seem sooooooooooooo passionate!

I just made no sense chikvicious. I don’t really remember what was said at the end of the interview, but that doesn’t stick out in my mind as being said.

zettibetti, I was asked about the video again. A TFA alum told me that they don’t make the decision soley based on the final interview. Yes, it is a big part of it but at the same time they look at the past round of interviews too

That’s good cali. I guess if we made it that far that’s good! I received an e-mail before the interview discussing how to prepare for the interview and given the STAR method of interviews. Did anyone else get something like this?

Zettibetti, I was so nervous they’d ask about that stupid video! They asked me about a couple of my written answers and a few of the exact same questions I was asked on the phone interview, but luckily nothing about the interview. That reminded me, I wonder how much weight that online activity has? I know I probably got at least one wrong on the multiple choice test. Also, my interviewer said things like “Great,” and “That’s really good,” and “Congrats” when I talked about any of my accomplishments, but I think they are just trained to say these things and make every interviewee feel good.

It would be so awful to be waitlisted! Ah! I hadn’t even thought about that. I only put LA as my highly preferred and listed special circumstances and luckily my interviewer was the head of the LA region. She was able to tell me some exact numbers. She said they had 160 (around that, I wish I could remember the exact number she said!) people confirmed for LA and were going to accept about 220, which made me feel a little better. She also told me all of the early childhood education spots were filled for LA because they have to accept all of those people the first couple of deadlines because there is so much testing and paperwork to do that they have to give people plenty of time to do it. Hopefully that’s helpful to anyone else who wanted LA.

I was asked the same questions again too! I forgot about the multiple choice thing! I guess we will never “really” know and can only try to remain positive!! We have no control over the situation now and just have to be POSITIVE!!! That being said, I know we are all going to be flipping out still!!! I think the more positive energy we emit, the more positive our results will be? I don’t know.

I KNOW CHIKVICIOUS! I thought about being waitlisted too!!! I think we are all so determined though. I know I will be TOTALLY bummed if it doesn’t work out, as will all of you, but everything happens for a reason I guess. I was going to add LA, but I am kind of scared. I don’t know what the area is like. I try to relate everything to Detroit though and I know Detroit. If Detroit is considered the worst city, the other one’s have to be better???

Oh ya, I withdrew from some classes. I feel like that is gonna prevent me from going further :/

I put LA as one of my higly preferred as well and I did not put Early Childhood… But my higly preferred number 1 were Florida regions…

They asked me about the video questions as well… and some of the phone interviews as well… maybe they were trying to trick us to see if we were going to say differently than the phone interview?? I don’t know…

They don’t look at your preferred regions when determining acceptance. The only reason it might possibly affect your acceptance is if you are waitlisted. Then, if spots in a certain region open up, they might accept people from the waitlist who preferenced that region. If you get on a waitlist, though, you’ll have a chance to change your preferences.

They really do accept everyone who they feel is qualified; you aren’t actually “competing against” the people who apply at the same time as you. And this year, I don’t think there’s even a waitlist, or at least, there wasn’t for the first couple of deadlines.

BookAddict, that is good to hear about the waitlist!!! I have seen your previous posts and you know what’s up!!!

zettibetti…

Don’t stress about being the best! I don’t know if your interviewers stressed it, but ours made a point that this was not a competition. At my interview, there were definitely people who were better and worse than others, but it was nice to not worry about being cutthroat and just focusing on working together.

I’m sure the people who are overpowering in their group interviews are the ones who think it is a competition, but I didn’t go into it with that mind set. I am a very competitive person, but rather than try to make others look bad so I look better, I tried to think like a teacher would have to, and I think that is a good thing.

Don’t worry about being the best… just be happy you were YOUR best. :-)

Zettibetti:
“Oh ya, I withdrew from some classes. I feel like that is gonna prevent me from going further :/”

I withdrew from some classes too, but I explained why. I hope that doesn’t have a bearing on the admissions decision! There are just so many factors that I keep thinking about and second guessing myself!

My interviewer did ask me a few of the same question from the phone interview… I think they just wanted to get more information from my previous answer.

Cinemaniac…there were one or two people who seemed overpowering and I felt like a few of us could not speak. Other than that, I felt like it went well. I tried to think like a teacher too. I just let them speak their opinions and if I disagreed I tried to back up my view with evidence from the documents.

I am glad I am not the only one who withdrew! I withdrew from a few too many courses in community college and one course three years ago at the university level. I was only asked about the course at the university level and I just explained what was going on in my life at the time and that I changed major’s.

I was told they just wanted more specific answers. Overall, I really enjoyed my interview and was only nervous during the 5 minute lesson plan. I thought the interview was made very relaxing and I’m glad I was able to even go that far! Just that means a lot to me!

Hey Everybody!
Just joining the thread. I’ve been reading all of these for weeks and finally broke down and joined.
I read a few posts awhile back asking why someone who is already a teacher would want to join TFA. Well since I am currently a kindergarten teacher I thought I could at least share why I want to join. I graduated in May 2011 and went straight to work on the traditional route. I got my job as a kindergarten teacher working in a Title I low income school. I love what I do! But I don’t feel as though I am doing all that I can to help close the achievement gap. Though my school qualifies as Title I, we have met AYP standards for the past 15 years! So we’ve got it going on! I guess I want to join to TFA to help another school achieve these same results. I have such a heart for it and I feel that joining in a movement with so many other passionate people who share a common goal will really accelerate my potential. It is hard to go at it alone, and I think TFA would be a great support system. I like to think of myself as a “lifelong learner” and TFA will really develop my potential even further.
I just wanted to share because I saw several people questioned this topic.
Is it March 6th yet?

Welcome laine!! That is very insightful and good to know! That is totally awesome that you’re so dedicated to the cause too!! Good for you!!! I wish it was March 6th! I have the next week off for winter break and I feel like it’s dragging!!!

Have any of you heard why TFA may have extended this last deadline? I wasn’t sure if this was a common thing from previous years or if they are needing more applicants?

I was wondering that too! Hopefully they need more applicants! That would be good news for us.

Where are you guys seeing that they extended the deadline? Was it not February 10th?

Chikvicious- It was extended to Feb 16th.

What other options are people considering for next year in the unfortunate case that you are not accepted to TFA?

I hope that means they’re short on applicants and will accept a bunch from our deadline! Or it could mean they didn’t choose enough this deadline… I wonder if they know when you walk out of the room if you’re in or not.
