Teach For America 2012 Corps

I agree with wonderstruck08 - the one-on-one interview’s hard to figure out. It feels like they’re not listening to you much because they’re typing but I think you probably did fine. I too got a lot of the same questions as my phone interview and it’s probably a good thing that you were able to answer with different stories. I feel like they wouldn’t waste the second time they interview you on just checking on answers. It’s kind of a given that you’re not “lying.”

But otherwise, you seem like a really strong applicant! Best of luck :)

When might 5DL applicants start noticing changes in transitional funding status? I know it doesn’t always mean anything and that it doesn’t change for some people until right before acceptance notification. I’m just getting anxious!

@KnickyG

Glad to see another veteran on here. I’ve also been a longtime lurker, first time poster.

I guess it’s always a surprise!! Can’t wait for April 12!!! Very curious to know what they would (or will) give me as a subject!

Just out of curiosity, what was everyone’s first choice for regions? Did you pref. urban or rural regions mostly? High need ones?

My region is Hawaii. I am married with kids, no possibility to move /=. I am assuming if you are open you have more chances though!

Mid-atlantic. I would be ecstatic to be placed in Baltimore, but I’d also be very open to D.C. or Delaware.

I’ve been lurking too. I was asked the same questions in the in person interview as the phone interview. I think they wanted consistency among your answers although TFA has a very different way of choosing their candidates so who knows.

I thought over all I did well. I taught a second grade lesson with an activity and did not hand out a quiz or work sheet as everyone else did. I also volunteered to go first, which I am now regretting since it could of come off as too aggressive. I came out of there feeling really wonderful but the next day I started over analyzing everything I said and did. Any who, fingers crossed.

@Shellby - I’m going through that right now! I came out of my interview feeling quite confident. Now I’m over analyzing everything and realizing how many mistakes I made. I’m just going to hope for the best!!

Hey everyone, I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s posts on here over the past few months as I prepared for my application. I’m a 5DL candidate and just finished my final interview on the 28th of March. So as others have, I’ll also go ahead and post some details about myself and give you folks (and more importantly those who will be applying for 2013) an overview of what it was like for me. (WARNING, it’s a bit lengthy)

Quick demographic on myself:
-Male
-High school dropout
-Spent 8 years active duty in the US Navy (reaching the rank of E-6)
-Bachelors in Psychology/Minor in Sociology (concurrent with military service) from the University of South Carolina Beaufort in 2010

My thoughts on…the Application Process:
-Holy McLovin they ask for an insane amount of information!
-Had to explain why I got thrown in jail, among other things
-Knowing how competitive the program is, I did not expect to move forward to the next stage in the process!

My thoughts on…the Phone Interview:
-Did not expect to make it to this point, but somehow I did
-My phone interview went HORRIBLYLOUSY!
-It was, for some reason, a bunch of conflict resolution type questions
-Based off of phone interview, I fully, wholeheartedly expected to NOT make it to the final interview

My thoughts on…the Final Interview Lesson:
-I somehow made it to the final round. MIRACLES DO HAPPEN!
-I went ahead and taught my lesson first to get it over with (and also to break the ice). It was a good idea…
-However, teaching math as your 5-minute lesson…not sooo much
-There were some pretty impressive presenters. There were also some that were not. Felt I fell in the middle.

My thoughts on…the Final Interview Group Activity:
-Broke group up into two smaller groups, but honestly, I have no idea what the interviewers were observing/looking for…

My thoughts on…the Final Interview (1:1):
-Me and my interviewer had pretty good rapport and good back-and-forth. The whole thing was pretty laid-back and easy-going.
-There was a brief role-playing scenario. Could’ve gone better…but wasn’t too bad.
-Only questions I got asked were 3-4 “must-ask” (as the interviewer stated it) questions…and that was it. Did not get asked anything about my resume, my responses, strengths or weakness…no standard interview questions at all…nothing of the sort. I honestly have no idea if that was a good or bad sign. Anyone have any thoughts?
-Since I was the last interview of the day, my session ran a little longer than the others (a little over an hour to be exact)
-Found out from the interviewer about their scoring process (more after the jump)

My Closing Thoughts:
-So apparently they have a scoring rubric. Don’t know if it’s just for the final interview day, or if it’s a culmination of the entire process from the beginning (I assume it’s the latter). I say this because I think my letter of intent and online activity are what got me to the final round. But apparently, once you reach a certain score, you are “recommended”. That’s all I could manage to get out of my interviewer. But apparently the process is still holistic…
-I did not apply for TF. Reason being is that if I get accepted (God-willing / #miracles dohappen), I can apply up until May 1 (I’m pretty sure that holds true for all DL’s). More importantly though, I didn’t want to drive myself crazy constantly checking on whether my TF status changed or not. I let myself retain the remaining sanity I had left after having gone through this whole thing.
-Do I think I made it? I honestly have no ####ing idea. People keep asking me how I think I did, and I keep telling them that I’ll let 'em know on the 12th of April. Expecting the worst…hoping for the best.
-And also, YOU are a trooper if you made it all the way down to this line!

Aside from all this, if I can answer anybody’s questions (based on my experiences), please feel free to reach out me =)

@balliztik what do you mean you didn’t apply? Thanks for all of your insight. I know they use a rubric and it’s a total from all the rounds. If you reach a certain score then you are basically accepted.

@shellby

Just in case there’s confusion, by TF I meant Transitional Funding (I apologize for not spelling it out first). But anyway, TFA states that ACCEPTED applicants have until May 1st, 2012 to apply for TF.

As evidenced on this site from other members, there seems to be a strong correlation b/w when your TF status changes (if you applied by the initial TF deadline…for 5DL it was March 20) to whether or not you got accepted as a member of the corps. I figured, why put myself through the self-inflicted mental and emotional suffering by constantly checking the status of my Transitional Application. If I get in, then fantastic, and I’ll go ahead and submit my TF after the fact. If they don’t accept me, then that’s one less in-depth form I had to fill out (have you seen that thing?).

@balliztik: Yeah I felt a little strange since everyone at my interview were all seniors in college and I actually graduated a few years ago and am already in the process of getting my masters degree in teaching ESL. They asked about that a lot! It’s via distance education so basically moving wouldn’t be a problem so long as I have internet, I’ve already done all my teaching practicum hours. I also worry because I am married and have a daughter so they asked about that a lot too…I made sure they understand that my husband was willing to go wherever I went (he hates his job and wouldn’t mind a small break to spend more time with our daughter…he sees her so little).

Hey everyone I received an email from admissions saying that they needed additional information about my candidacy/application and they would call me, but then they never called me. I already had my interview! Has anyone had this happen? Should I be worried? Lol.

@educatedbrotha12: You should probably just call them, since they are in the middle of making decisions right now they probably are just to swamped but if you called them and reminded them I am sure they would do something.

My transitional funding application is Under Review now…I hope that is a good sign. It didn’t say that yesterday…

@KnickyG: mine are under review as well. Do you have anything under whether the documents were verified yet?

Mine is under review/has been since I submitted everything (after the recommended 3.20 deadline). None of my documents have been matched up/verified in the columns.

Yeah, mine hasn’t been fully verified yet either…guess I jumped my own gun lol. Sigh, waiting waiting
While they are debating
Nerves are raking…raking
When will they end my tortured self?
Not until April the 12th.
Until then we suffer together
Oh, the heart of my dear mother!
How she years to know
If her only daughter will stay?
Or go…

HAHAHA. Now we’re writing poetry? I hear ya. I’m going crazy with the wait.

Did anyone else get a talk about a high needs region? Anyone decide to go back into the system and change their regional preferences based on the talk?
