teacher rec(s)

At my high school I have been a part of this after school class called “Science Research Projects H” for the past three years (sophomore, junior, senior).

The class is UC-accredited as a science elective. The objective of the class is to help students find science internships in the community, with companies, with nearby universities, etc. The students then spend a year working with a mentor on a project; 5-8 hours of work per week of school is required. At the end of the year, students are required to present their project to the class and write a technical paper for the teacher.

My question is, will JHU accept and consider the teacher in charge of that class as an academic teacher for my teacher recs?

I don’t see her on a daily basis, but I have regularly worked with and interacted with her over email, in her office, and at class meetings, so she knows me very well.

An additional question, if anyone knows: does JHU accept journalism teachers as academic teachers? I had my journalism teacher for only beginning journalism and advanced journalism, and I heard that some colleges do not accept journalism teachers as academic teachers for recommendations.

The Johns Hopkins’ Undergraduate Admissions Committee prefers that the one required teacher recommendation be written by a core academic teacher (English, Social Science, Natural Science, Math, or Foreign Language), and that teacher taught the applicant in junior or senior year. This is only a stated preference, and not an official requirement – however, I would suggest all applicants adhere to this preference.

The two instructors you mentioned in your post do not fit into this category. They both are elective course instructors. You can absolutely request that they submit supplemental recommendations on your behalf, but I’d recommend you also request a recommendation from one of your core academic teachers. You are able to submit two supplemental recommendations in addition to the required counselor and required teacher evaluations.

Do supplemental recommendations have to be from other sources? Could I send more than one recommendation from other core course teachers?

Never mind. The search function is my friend. Is the only way to send extra recs by snail mail?

Beyond the two required letters of recommendation (counselor and 1 teacher), supplemental recommendations can be sent by anyone – including another teacher. We do not recommend sending parent or peer recommendations.

And yes, additional recommendations must be sent by postal mail – we do not accept application materials via email and I do not believe the online application systems allow for additional recommendation uploads. If they do, then we would definitely take them that way.
