Teacher Recommendations?

Does Indiana accept or even look at teacher recs?

They do, but if you have a strong GPA and test scores they’re really not necessary at all. If you’re borderline recs may help.

Thanks, Leila. I have a 1310/1600 and a 3.9 weighted GPA. If I did submit the recos, should I just include it with the transcripts sent from the school? I couldn’t find the information on the website.

Your stats are high enough to easily get accepted without the teacher recs. I would just apply as early as possible and get accepted. Then maybe retake the SAT as soon as possible and score a 1340 and try to get the $9,000 per year scholarship. IU superscores the SAT, so you will only have to improve CR or Math by thirty points (or improve one score by 20 points and one score by 10 points) to get the IU Distinction scholarship. You must apply to IU by November 1 to be considered for automatic scholarships, and get your improved SAT score to them by January 15. IU has lots of students with the distinction scholarship from CT/NJ/NYC area.

Thanks for the input! I actually completed my application last week and just waiting for my HS to send transcripts next week.

ctcollegekid, I suggest you do not send teacher recs. Your stats are high enough that you do not need them and in the event you bring up your SAT and qualify for distinction scholarship , you may be invited to apply for select scholarships. My daughter qualified for competing for the select scholarship and regretted sending in teacher recs with her intial application. When she apllied for the select scholarship she had to get new teacher recs from different teachers, she was not allowed to use the recs she had previously submitted with her intial apllication for admission. Good luck!

Thanks, ISB. Should I also hold off sending in an essay?

Don’t send the essay. It is useful only for borderline applicants. The admissions office evaluates 33,000+ applications a year. They don’t like to spend time reading essays.

lsb312,

Why wouldn’t your D be able to ask the same teachers to write the LOR for SSA? Is that a IU policy I have overlooked? Thanks

The ssa two years ago did not specifically ask for recommendations from different teachers, although I know this could have changed. It might just be a matter of interpreting the directions. The 2008 ssa said

“Please note: Even if you included letters of recommendation with your IU application materials, you will still need to submit new letters of recommendation for scholarship purposes.”

No mention of different teachers then. They probably want new letters to speed up the administrative process, because they don’t want to have to search through the admissions files to find the first set of recommendations, as probably at least two thousand students will get the ssa. Just don’t send recommendations with the admissions application. Everyone who gets the ssa will have high enough stats that they do not need letters of recommendation to be admitted anyway.

bthomp1,

Thanks. I also double checked the LOR requirement in SSA. I believe that you are right. The admission process is pretty efficient so far and IU has been very responsive. Good luck to all!

My daughter called the scholarship office last fall and they advised that she needed new letters of recommendation, so she regretted sending the essay and teacher letters with her intial application when she did not need to do so. As others have stated, only send essays and teacher letters if you are a borderline applicant.

Isb312, I am pretty sure Hutton only uses the ssa and letters of recommendation it asks for if the applicant is trying to get scholarships from Hutton. If your daughter is just trying to get into Hutton, I think you can just send an email to Jill Baker and let her know that you want into Hutton without going through the trouble of doing the essays, letters of recommendation, etc. and they will automatically let her in. At least in the recent past, if you got the ssa, then you automatically got into Hutton if you let them know that you want in. The Hutton scholarships are very competitive and not super generous, but they do give out lots of $1,000 renewable scholarships and getting essays in this early I think would be a big plus in favor of getting one and would be more worth the effort that someone getting the ssa in November or later.
