How much does USC weigh your teacher recs and interviews?

Also, do you actually have to go to USC to get an interview or do they have people in every state to do interviews?

teacher recs, extremely important

interviews, fairly trivial

every state does interviews

I was interviewed in Chicago by the dean of admissions to the LAS college. I feel that it was more beneficial than an alumni interview.

postalxservice-- not every state does interviews. and as for fairly trivial: that’s only if YOU find them fairly trivial. I definitely believe my interview was a major factor in my acceptance.

lol it’s not that i find them trivial… it’s that the sc website says they’re trivial AND the rep for my section came to our school and said it doesn’t do much for you…

he isn’t gonna lie.

the claremont rep told us that if you live in southern california and you don’t do an interview, your likelihood of getting into the school is extremely slim.

please don’t think so poorly of me. i wouldn’t make such one sided comments if i didn’t hear them from someone that was actually a part of the admissions process. i’m not quite speaking out of my butt here you know…

haha.

and you’re right. not every state has interviews. i just meant you don’t have to go to usc to do your interview…

aww bummer. I didn’t do interview. I live in southern california btw. oh well.

haha mrxpenguin that only applies to claremont colleges, not usc.

see, what i don’t understand is how usc could say that the interview doesn’t count that much. i think it’s way underrated.

I got in without an interview (forgot to request one in time), and I live in L.A. I think they’re mostly used to weed out anyone who’s severely cocky/antisocial/whatever and to demonstrate interest/fit - and the latter is way more important at small LACs than a school like USC, so I’m not surprised they don’t count for too much.

Teacher recs, on the other hand, are always important.

well i had a really good interview, and i think it helped with my admissions… how much, im not sure because i have a 4.0 uw and 33 act and would have probably gotten in w/o the interview. mine was not an alumn interview though, it was w/ the director of RHP and it was on campus.

also, it would be impossible for all applicants to have interviews so i think they are required to say that they are not terribly important.

it’s because it’s not possible for everyone to have an interview that usc regards them as slightly trivial. maybe i need a new word. trivial has such a negative connotation…

basically, the rep for orange county (he’s japanese and is listed in the admission couselors) told us that there are too few interview spots for them to be important. i mean, it’ll help if you need that last tiny boost but overall, it won’t do much for you. pretty much every single trustee/presidential (not nmf) person that got the scholarship or even an scholarship interview (i think that was like 20+ haha) didn’t do the interview. i only know one person that even did an interview…

but yeah. that’s that.

oh and by the way, socks, i can tell you exactly why you got in. your ec’s. i was looking at your stats, and you are amazing. it’s so incredible all the things you’ve done with your talent in ballet. anyone would be impressed by that. i mean, you’ve done outreach performances and you’ve founded a little ballet school? that’s crazy. props to you.
