i am a junior right now, taking a interest in applying to cornell university.
which is better?

a new and young psychology teacher (this is his first year full time teaching). i also asked him to be the teacher adviser of interact. so he does see me during the weekly interact meeting. i have a pretty good solid A in his ap psychology class (taking it right now). but he is new… i doubt he had ever written recs before. =(
-
a sophomore adv. algebra II teacher. she is known to be really hard and has been teaching for a looong time. she understood my struggle with algebra II and i always try my hardest in that class, ask for outside help, and pull off an A- at the end of the year. but she is a sophomore teacher and i hadn’t really talked to her this year.
-
a junior AP history teacher who doesn’t kno me really well other than the fact i try hard and have a A- in his class.
-
similar thing with a junior honor physics teacher as the history teacher.
i already have one teacher that i will definitely ask a rec from. she was my adv. english teacher freshmen year and is my honor english teacher this year and i am TAing for her.
my general idea of majors/minors right now:
business, advertising, psychology, philosophy
my ideal idea of major and minors (not set in stone):
major in business with minors in design and psychology

If you are a junior, it is way too early to ask for rec’s and even to think of who should rec you. If my dd has thought a year ago, it would have been a completely different mix of people that the actual three (except one). Ask at this time next year when it is more relevant.

My dd decided to use her Sr year AP Eng teacher who she had not had a class from before, but did know well. She used her Jr year Physics teacher, who did not like her at the begining of the year (talks too much), but loved her later (creative).

Worry more about learning about different qualities of schools your thinking of and doing well in class. Your Jr year teachers will know you better at the end of the year. That will be better than fresh/soph reccos. Meanwhile get a life.

I agree with bettina. Wait until next year; maybe the history or physics teachers will know you well enough by then to write you a superb rec.

thanks for your response but i truly don’t see the problem with planning ahead and it is not set in stone. maybe i should have been more specific.

i want mainly others’ opinion whether a new teacher who knows a student better would be more effective than a more experienced teacher but doesn’t know a student as well.

btw, define life? it is a topic that my friends often debate about.

if life means, going out and hanging out with friends. i have one already.

if life means, have a life outside of school. i have that also.

if life means, outside of this message board. i have that as well.

if life means, i am breathing. i am pretty sure that i have that too.

It was just a joke. Don’t worry (or get a life.) I am not trying to discourage you from planning ahead, but I am trying to educate you that it is wasted time on this subject, when you could be more productive thinking about something else. This is an advice board, did you not want any?

heres what i think…from what i see…your psychology teacher is the best bet…dont worry about the experience factor…i dont think that on the recs they even ask for teacher’s resume or anything…also, if its his first year and your his first recommendation and he likes you…he will try extra hard and put in more effort because hes new at the job and is “high on life”…his rec will be full of originality and style…compare that to a veteran teacher whos taught for 20+ years…he or she has written hundreds of recs and all might be pretty similar and boring after all that…youve got a great opportunity here especially since his class coincides with one of your potential majors and favorite subjects…also…when u do ask him for a rec…it will be next year and by then he will be teaching for 2 years

Just make sure you stay in touch with him and your other teachers next year…i made the mistake of not keeping in touch with a couple of teachers and it affected my choices for rec letters…
