Hi
I’m a student in high school in Australia and I’m applying for Yale as an international student for 2013. I’ve started thinking about my teacher references but I’m not entirely sure what constitutes a “good” reference. For the section of the common appliation teacher evaluation where the teacher ticks the boxes, how many “outstanding” or “excellent” ticks is considered a good teacher evaluation? I really have no frame of reference and any help would be appreciated.
thanks

It’s more about what your teachers say in their letter about your performance in the classroom, rather than the ticks of boxes. MIT has a great section on their website about teacher references: [Writing Recommendations | MIT Admissions](How to write good letters of recommendation | MIT Admissions)

I know that it’s the letter that matters more but I literally have no frame of reference. I was just wondering: if I get mainly in the second column from the right, is that average or below average? do most students get ticks in the far right or is the average student getting mostly ticks in the middle columns? But thanks for the MIT link, I’ll probably print it off and give it to my teachers because very very few of the students here apply overseas

As most students sign away their right to see their teacher recommendations (the FERPA Waiver), I don’t know if anyone can give you an answer. Given the selectivity of Yale, and it’s peer schools, I imagine that admitted students would only have the last three boxes checked (top 10%, top 5%, top 1%).

oh haha thanks anyway
