Teachers

How good are the teachers at your school?

Do they teach well?

Do they give too much homework?

How easy/hard is it to get an A?

Well, I’m one of them, so this may not be the answer you want.

But the answer is: it depends on so many things!

For example, in one of classes, there are probably 8 A’s. Those kids would think I’m an amazing teacher, because my teaching style seems to mesh with their learning style.

But I also have one student who is close to failing. He might have a different opinion.

Yet they sit in the same room every day, hear the same explanations, do the same problems.

Also, I think it’s very hard to generalize an entire school.

As to how easy/hard it is to get an A-- doesn’t at least a little of that depend on the student?

On the homework question, I have a 20 minute rule: after 20 minutes of doing real math-- no texting, no snacks, no computer, just math-- you can be done. When I check homework tomorrow, one of two things will happen. Either you’re the only one who struggled to finish, in which case I expect to see you at extra help tomorrow afternoon. Or everyone struggled, which tells me that either I didn’t reach my students and need to spend more time on the material, or I misjudged how long the problems would take.

It’s not a school policy, but a personal one that I’ve always thought made a lot of sense.

Most of them teach well.

I get about four hours of homework and two hours of studying each day. Also, about 45 minutes more of club assignments/officer duties.

It’s pretty hard to get an A. An average class has 25 people, and usually 3-5 get A or A-, 6-10 get B+, 5-6 get B or C+, with a minority of low Cs, Ds, and Fs.
