Teaching Class = How good?

Hey guys, junior this year at Whitney high school (top #1? basically) and by some magic me and 2 friends will be teaching AP computer science AB next year as in we are the teachers and all. Very cool so how much will this help my college apps for comp sci/engineering colleges if i (of course i will) say that i am teaching the ap computer science class at my school, enrollment is 17 seniors (next year to-be seniors) and 7 juniors and maybe 5 sophomores. Thats gotta be good :stuck_out_tongue: I don’t know how illegal it is, but hey, I’m qualified and our school likes trying new things.

 • i’ve been the computer administrator at whitney for 3 years now. (counts as expierence says my advisor)

i would say that it will help in the admissions process, and if everybody’s does well on the AP test…then you’re golden

You should mention it in an essay also. I feel it would definitely help, because how many of the other applicants have actually taught an AP class?

it better:) but the thing is i will be applying b4 ap’s…obviously -_- so they will never know ap scores.

Wow…that sounds awesome!

Is that legal though? >_>

Wait a sec…dont you need a teacher’s liscence thing or sumthin like dat to teach…are you saying teacher’s aid? or assistant?..cuz a teacher…i duno…i have never heard in my entire life of a high school student actually teaching an academic class and tihs case…its AP

if you are at a private school would it still be considered illegal?

well our school is a public school but we have an adminssions test … lol so we are stuck in the middle. But for the licence thing we are thinking of having some random teacher on “record.” (hehe)

hmm, i don’t think that many parents or students would be overjoyed with having kids teaching an AP class. btw, you will also technically have a “free” class period, something the ivies hate, esp in junior year.

What is the world coming to? I go to LC and besides San Marino, you guys are our biggest academic competitor, even tho we always win…

no i will be in senior year and i will be technically enrolled in the class as a student. And even if parents hate it we have a huge turnup of students as i mentioned and people are actually happy that im teaching it.

Don’t you have to be AP-certified to teach an AP course?

i was a bit wrong in my original post (The class will be called Computer Science AP) so it will be an AP class but you dont get the ap credit and its not listed as an official ap class. (and your right, we cant because we have to be certified)

Gotcha. So, sort of like an AP-prep course? It’s still very interesting.

I don’t get how that works. Won’t the students your teaching take the AP exam and isn’t that the same thing as an actual ap class.

it is, except we arnt legally allowed to teach a class (and even worse, an AP class since collegeboard has to approve) so its a way to get around it -_-

OK if it brings up this much controversy, you have to begin to wonder how the adcoms may see it…

theyd see it as a person who not only took the commitment and worked hard for an AP course, but a person that helped a whole class learn the material so that THEY couldtake the AP… its a smart thing what you ghuys are doing, its like a “prep course”, and even though it doesnt go down as an AP class, they still take the test… and he gets to "
teach" it

:) yea its fun, i love computer science and its going to be great for college apps haha, just imagine ahah, i taught the damn class -_- and everyone passed the test with a 4 or 5 :P
