For secondary education you apply to that college that has the major field of study in which you believe you might teach. That could be LAS, e.g., for history, but it could also be something else, e.g., art and theater would be in College of Fine and Applied Arts. The way it works is that you then work toward a degree in your college for that major but also take education related courses to acheive teacher certification. As you correctly noted, you apply to the College of Education for preschool, elementary and special ed

For secondary education (I am currently in the program for social studies/history), you apply to the major which is the subject you wish to teach. You do not enter the university as a secondary education student. The program is for your last 2 years at the university. You apply to the secondary ed program in the early spring of either your sophomore or junior year (app deadline is usually Feb. 1 or thereabouts). This is risky, because it does not guarantee you will get in. You basically go crazy your first 2 or 3 years trying to get the best grades, beef up your resume (volunteer, etc), and you’re required to do 50 hours of volunteer tutoring before you may apply to the program…and that still doesn’t guarantee you an in.

Should you get in to the university and wish to aim for secondary education, MAKE SURE YOUR ADVISOR IS AWARE OF THIS. There are some very specific classes that you MUST take before even applying to the program, and you can not really deviate from the required courses. If you want to know more than that, just send me a PM.
