<p>Does anyone know if there are job openings for new elementary school teachers in Paterson or Passaic or any other areas that would be a short commute from the city. My D wants to live in Manhatten and would be willing to commute to NJ.</p>

<p>And in terms of public transportation Newark is by far more convenient than either Passaic or Paterson (which are perhaps in worse shape than Newark for that reason among others). What I am not understanding is why the OP’s daughter isn’t making inquiries on her own and through her school. I know the job market is horrendous for everyone but surely if someone just got or is getting a master’s in elem ed the school giving the degree is the place to make contacts. Teaching in an urban (or any other school) school is going to be a challenge, as will be finding the right job–not something where one’s mother can help except to write great cheerleading letters to keep child’s sprits up.</p>

<p>Maybe I’m wrong, but I think it might be difficult to be able to afford to live in Manhattan on the salary of a first-year teacher in any of these towns/cities. Manhattan is a very expensive place to live and those school systems probably aren’t paying the highest salaries.</p>
<p>My niece is a second year teacher and does the reverse commute (Manhattan to NJ). There are several cities that you can make the commute fairly easily. I would try- Newark, Jersey City, Hoboken, Harrison.
I assume she will not take a car so she needs to see how close to the train station the school is located. You also need to remember the trains leaving Manhattan in the early morning are not as frequent as the inbound trains. I would also check bus routes but the Train and/or Path just seems the way to go for me.</p>
