I know this might be a little cliche, but I’d like you opinion on the following situation. After not being accepted by the programs I applied to (MITES, RSI, PROMYS), I’ve decided to take a trip back to my homeland, Sri Lanka, and teach kids there English. I am fluent in both English (1600 Writing+CR) and Tamil (the native language), so it could work. However, would it be too cliche?? Admittedly, I AM doing this for college, but at the same time I’m also going to be dedicated and really enthusiastic about teaching the kids. So, should I even pursue this type of thing? Has anyone done something similar?

Also–how long should I go for? I was thinking 1 month (4 weeks). I have to order plane tickets by the end of this week, so it is semi-urgent. Happy memorial day, by the way!

yeah, my auntie’s a teacher so i’ll just be teaching some of her kids i guess, it’s all worked out but idk if it would be kind of unrelated to my career path (scientist)

Since it’s your homeland, it actually makes sense why you’re choosing Sri Lanka. it would be really obvious if you went to say, Moldova, to do this. If you find teaching quite exciting and fun, by all means do conduct it.

Sri Lanka is still a bit dangerous, especially for heritage Tamils, to go back to the homeland. Has it ever occurred to you that you might have family in Thailand because once your father’s house got burnt down in 1988, the rest of his family had to leave the country because it was too dangerous. Your father hasn’t seen his brother for 11 years and thought it might be a good idea to take his family to see their long lost cousins… That’s just a thought though. All speculation. I don’t think you want to become a scientist either and Tamil is not the native language of Sri Lanka…it actually originated in India.
