My daughter is a prospective student. She is a high level dancer and has never done team sports. I see there is requirement for 2 PE lifestyle classes which will be easy for her to be excited about (after looking at the examples) but also a requirement to do a team sport course.
We have looked through their website but have not been able to find any examples of what would satisfy this requirement, other than reading that a club or intramural sport would qualify.
Does anyone have some examples of a team sport course that would be fun for a non-athlete? Does it really mean she has to join a regular sport like soccer? Or are there alternatives like pickleball, badminton, sailing, etc.
Has she visited yet? Or you can talk to a student through admissions. Not sure if flickerball is as big as it was but it used to just be a fun thing you did with your freshman hall.
Courses and Requirements | Davidson describes the PE requirement. For the team sport requirement, there are links to varsity sports, club sports, and intramural sports; the pages list what sports exist in each category.
This is the page we found before and looked at the intermural sports list which felt very short. I looked again and see that there are a lot more choices for club sports.
Do clubs sports at Davidson allow students to join if they have had no experience with that sport before? I have always assumed they were for students who have experience but don’t want to play at the DV 1 level.
I can’t answer any of your questions about Davidson, but you may want to find out if being a team manager fulfills the requirement (if that’s of interest.) At the BS my kid attended, this was how a number of kids met their team sport participation requirement.
My guess is that some club sports that have a heavier individual component (pickleball, swimming, running, etc.) could be more welcoming to novices. Everyone could practice and learn but not necessarily compete. Thinking of it like a large roster with a smaller competitive squad. Could be worth exploring.
Most, if not all, club sports at Davidson welcome novices. My son took PE classes with friends and found them a nice break from his regular classes. BTW he absolutely loved his time at Davidson!
