Tebow looking for new haven

Denver’s defense this year was 2nd in total defense and 4th in PPG. The Denver defense in 2011 when Tebow started was 20th in total defense and 24th in PPG. Don’t try to say the defense won those games when the Bronco defense was one of the worst in the league, evidenced by the 1-4 start before Tebow took over. This league is all about wins, and more importantly, wins in the playoffs. Manning had a statistically better defense in Denver than Tebow, but couldn’t even manage one win in the playoffs with home-field advantage. Am I advocating that Tebow is better than Manning? No, not even in the slightest. However, Tebow deserves the chance to start in the NFL, and I believe him backing up behind the great Tom Brady for a couple of years with Belichick coaching him may go a long way in bettering him as a QB. He is only entering his 4th year. He hasn’t had any consistency with gaining relationships with coaches and players due to playing on a new team in 3 offseasons and the fourth was during a during a lockout. Some of you act like he murdered your family with the vitriol you display.

Tebow is actually about the same size and has about the same speed and quickness as Hernandez. You can look up the combine stats.

Can he catch? That’s a good question.

And you are unbiased, Mr. Florida Gator? ;)

In the first 5 games of Denver’s 2011 season, Denver gave up 23, 22, 17, 49, and 29 points.

In their next 8, where they went 7-1, they gave up 15, 45, 24, 10, 13, 13, 32 and 10 points.

In their last 3 games, they gave up 41, 40, and 7 (and lost the game they only gave up 7 points!)

In only 2 out of the 7 wins during the 7-1 stretch did the offense put up enough points to be the primary cause of victory. How did Tebow make the defense 10 points/game better for that stretch?

In the last 3, the defense reverted back to 30 points/game, and surprise, they lost all three.

FYI, the Patriots issued 80 media credentials for a June minicamp press conference. That shows the issue.

As to the Denver defense in the 2nd half of 2011, anyone who watched the games saw the defense was amazing and the offense was utterly horrible. The standard was the offense did absolutely nothing until late in the 4thQ. Praise to Tebow for pulling off stuff in the 4thQ. Boos for the rest of the games.

I think Fox is too conservative. He could have won the playoff game this year but would not let Peyton take a shot at the end zone expecting defence to hold up for the last few seconds. Tebow heroics in 4th were needed because they were losing anyway and he had nothing to lose.

In my view - Denver needs a new coach.

There won’t be anymore Wednesday press conferences for the Patriots…Wednesday is bible study night!

Belichick is like Gregg Popovich for the SA Spurs. He doesn’t buy teams. He doesn’t buy players. He makes them. Brady was no star in college. No one on the team was. Same with Pop, no one on the Spurs was a huge superstar. Danny green was cut and played D league. Gary Neal was undrafted. And look who’s in the finals.

Same with the Pats, built, not bought. Tebow will become great under Belichick. What happened last time they bought a player? Chad Ochocinco. Ask him about his worst season ever.

If Tebow stays until Brady retires, he will be a starting QB. A damn good one.

He had his chance and he did start in Denver. After that experience, John Elway could not wait to put Tebow on the next plane, and nobody on that team shed a tear. Perhaps we should conclude that Elway does not know much about the QB position, and about young QBs. Of course, we also know that Elway saw most games of a certain QB named Andrew Luck, and that might have reminded the great John what it takes to be a great QB in the NFL. Regardless, Tebow went to the Jets where all he would have needed to do was to beat the truly mediocre former USC QB. He could not do that, or even beat the backup.

Bottom line? He is no NFL starter and is not even worthy of backup spot at that position. In a team in need of a couple of gimmicks to get in the end zone, he might find a spot. Perhaps Belichick will design a couple of short yardage plays, but the reality is that he has a ton of better options that sending than overrated football player on the field. But then, perhaps a Hail Mary might be needed in a couple of games. Divine intervention might work better than talent … especially since Tebow has none of the latter.

PS The last SB winning QB for the Ravens was Flacco. And one could easily say that Flacco won that game for Baltimore. Trent Dilfer was a different story. He is not the first mediocre QB who won a Super Bowl.

I’m not for or against Tebow, but I don’t think he received any sort of chance with the Jets. How many plays did he have with them? 7 or 8? And that’s number of times on the field, not number of times he touched the ball.

Whatever you say about Tebow, at least he didn’t run into his own team member’s rear end, fumble the ball, and give 7 points to the other team.

What do I know about big beefy guys who run around with pig parts under their arms? All I remember, for sure, was that in college, he was the best player on the best team in college football, and then when he got to play in the pros, his entire team turned around.

Can he throw? What would I know? Can I catch? I know even less. But I do know what he done.

When Brady first entered the league, as the 199th pick (sixth round) in the draft, he was seventh on the depth chart. Despite his college successes (only one year), scouts and coaches didn’t like his throwing style, and many said he would never play in the pros. He started the 2000 season as the fourth string quarterback, behind starter Drew Bledsoe and backups John Friesz and Michael Bishop. During his rookie season, he was 1-of-3 passing, for six yards. One might have thought that would be the end of him.

That is why there are camps and preseasons:

The good, the bad, and the ugly:

Not sure what qualifies as “huge” in your vocab, but Duncan was the Player of the Year in College. He was defensive player of the the year three times. Second all time shot blocker.

Doesn’t get much bigger than that in my book. :D

btw: he also graduated with Honors from WF.

“The last SB winning QB for the Ravens was Flacco. And one could easily say that Flacco won that game for Baltimore.”

I look at it differently. Baltimore coach trusted his QB to make the play when they played Denver and Denver coach did not. Baltimore should not have won that game.

Ok fine, save Duncan. Look at Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Allen, Chalmers, Miller…no comparison.

Duncan is considered one of the best NBA players of all time.

notrichenough: “How did Tebow make the defense 10 points/game better for that stretch?”

When Tebow took over, he turned the Broncos into the #1 rushing attack in the NFL. Rushing teams are on the field longer and eat up a lot of clock. This allows the defense to remain on the sideline for longer periods of time, thus having less points scored against them.

xiggi: " John Elway could not wait to put Tebow on the next plane, and nobody on that team shed a tear. Perhaps we should conclude that Elway does not know much about the QB position, and about young QBs"

You do realize he was replaced with Peyton Manning, not just some random guy? If the Colts resigned Manning, Tebow would have remained on the Broncos. I have no problem with replacing Tebow with Manning. Almost every team would. There was no other QB in the league available that would have taken over Tebow’s job. Also, don’t try to correlate Elway’s playing ability to his ability to scout talent. Ask Michael Jordan about that.

“Tebow went to the Jets where all he would have needed to do was to beat the truly mediocre former USC QB. He could not do that, or even beat the backup.”

He was never given a chance to take Sanchez’s spot. If you’re not in the game, how can you prove your worth. Don’t even talk about practice or any other situation that doesn’t count. Tebow was terrible in practice in high school and Florida. Can you imagine him being pulled in college at Florida and not winning a NC or winning a Heisman because he was bad at practice. He thrives on the big stage. Sanchez playing every game was about Rex going down with a sinking ship because of his pride and arrogance. Greg McElroy proved he was better than Sanchez too but he never got the nod.

xiggi, I wonder why you’re so obsessed with Tebow and cherish every chance you can to criticize him. How many times do you talk about other players that you think are awful? Probably none, so why the obsession and the desire to even start your own post about him? Did your blood pressure increase when you heard he was signed? You think he is terrible, yet Belichick, who is arguably the smartest coach in the league, gave him a shot. Sorry if I’ll lean more towards his ability to judge talent than some tough guy on the internet with some inferiority complex. I realize that you hate Tebow because he is a Christian. All of your not-so-subtle jabs at religion really make you feel good about yourself, don’t they? Please explain to the population why it bothers you so much.

ditto everything Lergnom said. Everything.

If he is really as NFL football dumb (can’t remember plays or read defense; I purposely added the “NFL football” part in to distinguish from college, a different game) as has been reported, he will have an exceedingly difficult time making the roster or contributing to the Patriots. Brady is successful in NE because regardless of his college stats (or lack thereof) and physical abilities (or lack thereof), he kept his nose to the grindstone, soaked up knowledge and was malleable, and was smart, smart, smart

Maybe Tebow will be used for a few trick plays he can actually remember; Bill does like his all-around, versatile athletes, who he can mold into a player per the Patriot Way.
The positive is that New England is the perfect place to keep the media frenzy at bay (he didn’t stand a chance in NY).

Of course, Bill will have not one iota of regret in cutting him. It should be an interesting experiment.

I called it on Post #37. He will fit in somewhere on the Pats. I heard maybe as a tight end.

Not 1/3 less.

Broncos time of possession as a %age:

Pre-Tebow: 46, 50, 49, 45 average = 47.5

Half-Tebow: 33

Tebow: 51, 51, 51, 56, 46, 50, 37, 52, 44, 51, 55 average = 49.5

Playoff Tebow: 49, 56 average = 52.5

I don’t see a huge difference. And the last three games where TOP was over 50%, Denver lost. Two were blowouts. So I think your hypothesis is incorrect.

And anyway, they gave up 40+ points in 3 of their last 5 games. What happened?

Check post #35.

Tom Brady was actually very successful at Michigan. Very. But he was in this weird competition with the big name recruit that everyone expected to be a star … but Brady would outplay him and the team would win. Then the other guy went pro in baseball … and didn’t make it.

The reasons Brady was drafted late were that he was really skinny and really slow. And there were doubts about arm strength. He’s still really slow. Turned out to be one of the hardest throwers since Elway came in.

I can play too. I guessed in post #41 Patriots might take a flyer on Tebow. I don’t think Patriots are going to keep Tebow too close to the revolving door though. The Patriots will keep Tebow at least one year.
