Tech Help

Hey Guys!

Well the college season is almost over. As far as applying goes
Some of us, like myself, have gotten in ED so its time to start planning.
I live in Dubai so the Shopping Festival is on and everything is at a really good price right now so its good to start buying stuff immediately.

I need to buy a mobile phone and laptop for college. Money is not an issue so any suggestions are welcome.
For the cellphone, I am vacillating between the Black Berry Torch and the I-phone 4. I love the bbm feature but the apps are tooo good on the i pone. Whats popular with most college students?? What is more ā€˜cool’ ?? :D

As for the laptop. I think ill get the Mac Book pro. But any suggestions are helpful. (I dont a need a gaming one an I already have a PS 3)

I am a very social and outgoing person. I thought ill just put that out there. It might influence your suggestion.

And the reason ive come to CC and not Yahoo Answers or smtn is cuz I want the a more college studenty output.

Thanks a Ton!!!

Personally I like the torch better. Physical keyboard, plus a touch screen, you don’t have to use itunes with it.

And since you don’t sound like a heavy computer user, and money isn’t an issue, just go with the macbook pro. They have the least issues for non computer savvy users, and if you ever need a repair it sounds like you can drop the cash on bringing it to an Apple store to be fixed.

OSX is nice too, all the applications flow together, better user experience than a Window laptop.

Ok, whats your budget.
After all, you say money is not an issue yet you highlight you plan to start buying because things are on sale.

thanks mathematician1, even i am kinnda edging towards the torch.
yea i am not a heavy comp user so yea mac book seems a good match.

rythmgaming - i don’t exactly have a budget but for a numbers game id say $ 3500 for the laptop $1500 for the cell, soooo i guess i can buy most things.

keep the suggestions coming!!

Well for that budget, going for an SSD in your computer would be a given, but there is still questions of what you’ll use it for. Like if you use a lot of media, then getting an external harddrive setup with a usb 3.0 interface could be beneficial. Stuff like that. Then theres also blu-ray/other stuff.

Considering your relative lack of limits on funds, I’d suggest a MacBook Pro with SSD and the iPhone 4 (on Verizon, not AT&T).

I will use it for college purposes and entertainment purposes. I dont need a blu ray player as i have a ps3.
I think ill go with the ssd as bruno14 said instead of the hdd. Less shocks and stuff.

And bruno, for the Iphone, any specific reason behind that suggestion?? Cuz ive heard that Black Berry Messaging is very popular in the USA, so I wouldnt want to miss out on that. But i dont want to lose the I Phone apps and hotness.

Thanks guys!! Anyone else??

I don’t know anyone who uses BBM, since it’s restricted to people with BlackBerries. My friends and I tend to text each other for stuff like that. I would say that at least a third of my friends have iPhones and absolutely love them. I’m considering buying one now that they’re available on Verizon - right now I’m using an iPod Touch.

hmmm thats interesting!! i thought bbm ing was a rage in the usa
ill be going to penn. so the scene at penn and brown cant be all that different.

I think blackberry users do use bbm, but texting is pretty much the same thing. No one is going to think you aren’t ā€œcoolā€ because of what phone or laptop you have…

haha it isnt about being cool or anything. I just want the best thing in the market.

How about this, i buy a I Touch 16 gb and a BB Bold 9780 ?? What do you guys think??

bump
10 char

The ā€œbest thing on the marketā€ becomes obsolete in about 3 months. Get something that you like for what it is, not because it’s new and expensive and trendy.

Actually, better idea. Give me the money that you would have spent on all these inferior electronics and I’ll continuously advise you as to what the ā€œbestā€ latest device is. That way you look cool, I make money, and everyone is happy.

haha sure
wire transfer or cheque?? :D

Okay guys I just want to know this, forget the rest. How popular is BBMing amongst college students?? Especially those of Penn (or the East coast in general).

reactivating

Ask in the Penn forum if you aren’t happy with answers here. I’ll just say that here at Brown, basically no one uses BBM.

right
thanks man. Ill do that.
