“Teen soars as a golfer, but only after homework” (news item)

To get a sense of the summer Evan Harmeling has had on the golf course, take into account two dates:

First, there was June 6, when he failed to snatch one of 17 spots at a Massachusetts Amateur Championship qualifier, shooting a 75, then losing in a playoff at Indian Ridge Country Club, a course he frequents. He had already played in two Mass. Amateurs.

Then, there was Aug. 2, when the 19-year-old North Reading resident fired a 69 to finish off a two-round 141 at Middleton’s Ferncroft Country Club, eventually winning a playoff to earn one of the three qualifying slots for his first United States Amateur Championship, which starts Monday.

“It’s been kind of a weird summer,” Harmeling said by phone last weekend from San Francisco, where he managed to play a couple of practice rounds at The Olympic Club, the site of this year’s US Amateur. “I probably wasn’t practicing as much as I should have been, but I turned it around, and I started playing a lot more.”

“What happened there,” said Harmeling’s father, Mark, “was pretty clear. We sort of had a deal, he and his mother and I, that he was going to finish his academics at Phillips Andover strongly.”

While many parents of elite athletes are known to force their children into intense competitive regimens, the Harmelings were the opposite – Evan, a regular on the local and national junior circuit since age 11 and bound for Princeton this fall, was studying so much he didn’t even have time to practice.

Now, he’s hoping to make it out of the 312-player field in San Francisco, into the 64-man match play bracket, which is decided by two days of stroke play.

He’ll also have plenty of support. Princeton coach Will Green, who was a big reason the heavily recruited Harmeling chose the school, e-mailed Princeton alumni in the Bay Area, many of whom will turn out. Evan’s parents will also be there, along with a dozen relatives from the area, where his mother, Amanda, grew up.

After that, it’s on to Princeton

This is a nice story about a talented Princeton ‘11 and a family with its priorities in order. Congratulations, Evan!

Ahhh must you guys always show off your amazing student body?? We all know Princeton is amazing, just let it bask in its own self-excellence.
