Tell Me About The 92nd st Y

Hello everyone. My daughter will be staying at the 92nd Street Y in New Tork City this summer for a summer internship but I’ve recently seen things online that portray the 92Y as a horrible resident option. I was hoping some of you all would help me and tell me anything you know/have experienced with the 92Y. Thank you.

Where did you see that it was horrible?

We know students who have stayed there for internships as well, and found it to be perfectly fine, and then some.

Read this thread starting with post 12…where info about the 92nd st Y is discussed.

I will say…if your kiddo is doing that internship at the UN, it is a long commute from the 92nd St Y to the UN.

I live in NYC and go to the Y a lot. I have never been inside the dorms but I go there for concerts and lectures and the security is great. It is a good neighborhood and a few blocks from the subway.

@thumper1: It’s not so long if you walk it – 2 1/2 miles which, in the City in the summer, isn’t that big a deal.

2 1/2 mile walk in the heat of summer would not be my cup of tea…and certainly not in business casual clothes.

But this walk would take me a bit of time…but the OP could leave pretty early before the temps increase.

Still, I think the 92nd street Y offers a lot for the money for temporary summer interns.

I’m curious where the OP read the nasty reviews.

From the 92nd Street Y, you are four blocks to the # 6 local train and six blocks to the # 4 or 5 express trains, all of which go to 42nd Street Grand Central Station. From there it is three blocks to the UN. That would take about 1/2 an hour door to door. You could also take the bus down Lex. A bit slower depending on the time of day.

(CC Doesn’t want my mom using my account so from now on this is the daughter talking)
Yelp didn’t have the greatest things to say so that’s where I read the bad reviews. @thumper1 Yes it is the UN internship. And we’ve calculated a 30 minute commute just like you pointed out @uesmomof2 and we are ok with that. This was the only residence that would offer me a place to stay because of my age.

So I’m thinking by what I’m reading here that the 92Y is going to be ok. Any other tips for living there or in new york for the summer?

My kid stayed there last summer and she worked all the way downtown. It had air condition, and as a resident one could use the facilities for free. It’s also convenient to subways, 4, 5 and 6 are all close by. It’s one of nicer dorms in the city.

You might also want to try the Second Avenue bus to get to work. It drops you off quite close to the UN. (It only runs one way, so you can’t use it to go Uptown.)

You can get limited (express) bus on 2nd Ave, and take the 1st Ave bus uptown. When I lived uptown, I used to take those buses to and from my midtown office (very close to UN).

Wow thats great advice thanks @oldfort and @jonri. Any advice about food in the area? I will be staying alone hence will have to provide for myself whether that means cooking or going out so tips would be greatly appreciated.

It’s a very quick commute on the 4 or 5 express train. 86th and Lex to Grand Central, two stops. She can commute with me! Plenty of grocery stores in this neighborhood and places to eat out. Whole Foods on 3rd and 88th, Fairway on 86th, Gristedes 89th and Lex, other small bodegas. Highly recommend a walk home through Central Park, express buses on Madison are great.

Fairway is a great option since it is the least expensive of the stores mentioned, and has huge variety.

@jrpar I will be in New York from late June through all of July-do you live there? You said I could commute with you-do you take the same route that I would (4 train to grand central)?
@momof3sons Thanks for the help!

Any other helpful tips about living alone in New York City for the first time?

Yes, I live near the Y (and I use the 92y gym in the winter when the weather isn’t great for Central Park) and that’s my commute. It’s a good safe neighborhood, and subway/buses make it easy to get around. I am a huge fan of the park and spend a lot of time there walking/exercising weather permitting, I’d recommend mapping out which neighborhoods of the city you want to explore on weekends - NYC is a great city to walk around. Message me if you have questions, glad to help!

There is a lot to do that is free in NYC especially in the summer. Lots of outdoor festivals, concerts in the park, Shakespeare beyond the well-known Shakespeare in the Park. MOMA is free on Friday nights and it comes with a long slow moving line to get in, the Met is open till 9 PM Friday and Saturday night and is pay what you want all the time, the NY Historical Society is pay what you want on Friday, same with the Morgan library on Madison and 36th St, the Jewish Museum is free on Saturdays and so on… and if you need to go shopping, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s and Bloomies are generally open till 9. The Duane Reade drug stores are frequently open 24 hours. There are lots of inexpensive Thai restaurants and pizza places and coffee shops all around.

Upper East Side is safe and as already mentioned above, subway 4, 5, and 6 are close by 92nd Y. You can also take M15 to go downtown on 2nd ave. I used to sent my daughter to 92nd Y for music lessons and security in the building seemed very good.

You probably will want to spend most of your time downtown. You can take 4, 5, 6 and get off at 14th, Astor or Bleecker. 4, 5 will also take you to Brooklyn.
You should get a monthly subway metro card. Subway is the fastest way of getting around the city.
