Right now I am at a bar alongside a fire pit in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, NJ. I took a bus here from Manhattan to spend time with a friend who has a condo here that she and her husband rent out starting next week. I’ll take the bus back tomorrow. Cheers!
Did a long weekend to New Orleans. It’s a great food and music city. Highlights included the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the World War 2 Museum, the Muffaletta sandwich at Central Grocery and beignets at Cafe du Monde. I thought 4 days was the right amount of time there.
Most of our weekend/short trips are in the Northeast since that’s where we live, and I don’t think I’d ever go somewhere requiring a plane for just a few days except for a wedding or other event. Anyway, we’ve done Kennebunkport, Boothbay, Portland (ME), Cape Cod, Nantucket, Lenox, Boston, (MA), Middlebury, Burlington, Woodstock, Manchester (VT), Mystic (CT), Hancock, Hanover, White Mountains, Walpole (NH), Bristol, Newport (RI) plus lots of ski trips to different mountains in New England. We’ve done Lancaster and Gettysburg, PA, Finger Lakes, and NYC. Probably forgetting a few. Tuesday we are going to Shelter Island for a few nights. Our first time in that area of Long Island.
We have done FL (several locations), Charleston, Charlotte, Asheville, Nashville, NYC, New Orleans and yes even flown across country for a long weekend (many times). One that was really enjoyable was, of all places, Birmingham AL
I love a long weekend trip and have no problem jumping on a plane to do so. Some favorites have been Park City, UT and Stowe, VT ( I live in the Midwest). Currently in SW Michigan and next weekend it’s Door County, WI. We like to bike, hike, golf.
My husband’s family did the LBI thing back in the day – grandparents rented a house, whole family spent two weeks. When we lived nearby we would go off season every weekend, but I never got over the shock of beach tags!
We looked into a 2 week rental once, and could not afford current rates, but wave to Barnegat for us!
Last weekend I joined Ds and sig others for what is becoming a traditional Memorial Day trip someplace between their mid east coast homes. This year, again it was the Shenandoah Valley. Stauton, VA was a winner of a town, with a cave tour close by. Other years it has been Richmond, VA or Maryland’s Eastern shore. We like flower farms, farmers markets, botanical gardens and art. I’d emphasize history more on the next trip as I’ve seen little civil war history.
Local friends and I have started doing day trips. Last week it was to Mt Blue Sky (used to be Mt Evans). Unfortunately it was snowing so didn’t see goat or sheep or even little critters but fun. One friend had never been before and she has lived in Colo for 50 years. It’s only 2 hours from Denver to the top.
In two weeks trip is to Royal Gorge. I’ve been, others haven’t, but I haven’t been on the railroad.
I wanted to go to Black Canyon of the Gunnison last year but it caught on fire so the season was sort of lost. That’s a 2-3 day trip so will fit into this ‘weekend’ trip
I love your pictures. I have a camping reservation coming up at Twin Lakes near Mammoth. We are always looking for places to explore. We usually go early June and Devils Postpile is usually still closed. Many years ago we camped along the river in one of the campgrounds in the Devils Postpile area. It was beautiful. The only downside was we were in our tiny backpacking tent but we were surrounded by trailers with generators running.
For us: Galena, IL, and Door County, Wisconsin. Later this year, we will be going to Starved Rock in IL.
Yes, Reds Meadow Road is closed until July. After July it’s only open on Thursday through Sunday. You must take the ETSA shuttle bus instead of drive unless you are camping or staying at Red’s Meadow Resort, and 2 hour delays may occur in addition to times waiting for shuttle. It seems like an awkward system. However, you can avoid this if you walk in on the trails. You can walk in on any day/month/time that weather conditions permit. I’m planning to do this – start at Horseshoe Lake → MacLeod Lake → climb the volcanic cinder Red Cones → Rainbow Falls → Devil’s Postpile.
The Visit Mammoth website at https://www.visitmammoth.com/certified-unreal/ has an interactive map with pictures/videos and GPS coordinates for most of the highlights that have been discussed in this thread, as well as other locations.
I apologize I misunderstood you, in part because it was after my post about a 5 hour trip. Semantics if that is a long drive or not. We have driven Toledo to Leelanau many times which to me is a pretty long drive and we have also flown Midwest to Denver in less time including airport time than that. I agree there is lots of variety of opinions and that is good.
If a destination is less than 2-3 hours away we would probably do one or two or even three single day trips over months or years rather than a single 4 day trip, unless meeting up with friends or family is included. Four day trips to places 5-6 hours by car or plane work well for us and I am getting some good ideas here.
No one has mentioned NYC? When we lived in suburban DC it was a 4 hour drive/Amtrak /bus
trip away. So much to do and see it’s worth multiple long weekends! We also liked Asheville, Philly, Baltimore, Charlottesville…
Now in the Midwest, I recently spent 4 days in Chicago ( another city with lots to do). Going “Up North” ( Grand Marias ) for a long weekend in the fall.
D and I did a girls weekend in Newport RI 2 years ago that was lots of fun.
I did ![]()
Sorry @jym626 . I missed that. I love weekends in NYC. It never gets old to me.
We flew up a year and a half ago for a long weekend to see a few shows and some friends. Got to have lunch with a cc’er whose child has been quite successful in theater and see the play. What a true joy.
For us, Vancouver BC was and still is a fun weekend getaway destination within an easy drive (just need to make sure to time the border crossing right). Stanley Park, Grouse Mountain, Granville Market are awesome to revisit.
I second this, although for us it’s a 3-hour flight.
What about Boston? Lots to do there too!
And Cleveland is a great long weekend destination…Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland Museum of Art, dinner in Little Italy, a concert at Severance Hall or a show at the Playhouse. Metro parks have nice walking trails.
We are in Southern California, but have done long weekends in NYC, Boston and DC. We can get non stop fights from here to each place. We normally leave on a 6 am (PT) flight and land around 3pm on the East Coast. Then we have 3 full days in whichever city and return on Sunday. I know others don’t like to travel such a long distance for a short amount of time, but H and I don’t mind. In April we flew from here to Charlotte, NC (non stop) to watch GD at an Airbnb while D1 and SIL came from CT to attend a wedding. We arrived Wednesday afternoon and left late Sunday afternoon.
