Us neither, and it’s not just distance to factor in - we’re happy to drive to SoCal (we’re in the Bay Area) for a long weekend and have done it a number of times (LA, theme parks, San Diego, Palm Springs even), and the driving time pretty much ends up equivalent to the flying time to the east coast.
A nice long weekend trip is to Cambria, Ca. You can see the sea lions north of town on Hwy 1. Take a drive up to Ragged Point. It’s an awesome coastline without the commitment to go all the way to Big Sur.Visit Hearst Castle if you haven’t been. We love having a glass of wine at the Hearst winery tasting room on the coast. Spend the day in Paso Robles. Visit some wineries or just browse the shops round the square. They have a light show Sensorio that’s worth a visit. Other day trips can be to Morro Bay, explore the marina and visit the rock. Cayucos is a cute tiny seaside sound that has a swimming beach. San Luis Obispo has a small airport that is served by some major airlines.
Santa Barbara airport also is a great small airport where you can arrive just a short time before your flight. Many airlines have direct flights.
I find if the airport is easy a flight isn’t bad for a long weekend.
Paso Robles, Hearst Castle and the drive up to Ragged Point is one of our favorite weekend getaways! We love Paso wines.
One of these days we are going to get to Nepenthe!
Sensorio was great! We spent a bit of time exploring the places you mentioned when C26 was doing a summer program at SLO. Cayucos was very cute. But also add in Avila Beach and Pismo Beach, with its gorgeous cliff top walks.
We just had a fabulous 4-day weekend at the von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont. It’s just a beautiful place, and there are so many fun things to do. We hiked with goats, observed their herd of cattle and learned all about them, heard a lecture about the family’s history, met Maria’s granddaughter, took a yoga class, toured their grove of maples and sugarhouse, and got massages, sat in the hot tub looking over the mountains, etc. They do everything with excellence - I shared in the other thread that because it was our 40th wedding anniversary, they gave us $150 in gift cards. Who does that?!? Our room, just a regular one, had a balcony with a view of the mountains.
I can’t recommend this place highly enough. Whenever I tell someone about it who has been there, they say, “Oh, we love that place!” Over and over I’ve heard that.
