Yes, seriously. Educational institutions shouldn’t have typos.
Years ago, a local college in my area had billboards with a typo. The fact that no one caught it anywhere in the chain from conception to actual billboard is terrible.

I had never heard of Lake Forest until I lived in the Midwest, and at first thought someone was joking with me! North Carolina native (i.e., Wake Forest) here.
LOL @massmomm, my D will be attending MHC next year and the one we get most often is Mount Holy Oak, bringing up visions of Druid priestesses, which I actually kind of like.
My in- laws used to live in Springfield, MA and when we looked at Mount Holyoke for D, FIL kept insisting it was a Catholic school!
I’d think that it was an unfortunate typo. Congrats, from one Carl parent to another!
When we were touring colleges we were in a store that had a tshirt that said " Georiga Tech". We bought it… just because! I don’t think we still have it, though. Loved to see how many people caught the typo.
@Pizzagirl oops! Sorry English is not my first language. D always makes fun of me of my English but that’s why I am not a school principal! (I spelled it right this time yay!)
Also I find it embarrassing for the school to post the school name wrong when they announce it in public. They post the student name then the school. But they did put Princeton and Stanford before my D’s and it’s not in an alphabetically order though. Like the IB kids with the most prestigious acceptance first, then the Tech kids, then kids from some special program and the main stream at last. I do think the school cares about what their students have achieved and that’s why I find it funny. They kind of do it half-heartedly when they spelled the school name wrong and only put “Carlton” instead of “Carleton College”.
@FallGirl D is a recruited athlete in Carleton but I guess D3 is not something her school cares. They did make a big deal when a kid got into Cornell to play football with academic probation. But personally I do think it’s big deal when a kid with amazing grades and stats makes a team in one of the best colleges in the Nation.
Thanks everyone for the congrats! People here are always nice and supportive!
Well, if you really want to make a statement, I could see crafting a long letter and giving it to the school at the end of the year if you have no other kids coming through. Because, really, it is irritating. And by highlighting only the “name” colleges, the school is furthering that notion that only some schools are worthy of our attention and furthers the academic arms race. But making a big deal of it now would make you look petty, IMHO.
What kills me is when a fake Prada bag is spelled with Proda or Prado. Sheesh, we don’t ask for much, at least get the spelling right.
OP - I would call them out on the putting Princeton and Stanford first. It should be listed alphabetically by student name or by school name.
@Youdon’tsay If I were to do it, the letter would be 3 pages long because there is so much to address but I don’t think my letter would change anything, to be honest. I am annoyed but not to the point that I would take any action and I already emailed the IB counselor about their error. I just want to share this on CC because it’s annoying yet funny how some high schools handle things.
I have a last name which isn’t hard to spell but isn’t that common. I am so used to it being spelled incorrectly that if someone can’t find a reservation or package for pick up or name tag when I’m checking in, I ask them to look under the common misspelling. “Try G-r-o” ( correct is ‘gor’) You wouldnt think reversing the ‘gor’ to ‘gro’ would make that much difference but it does. We’ve all gotten over it.
You also need to get over the fact that more people have heard of Princeton than Carleton. Academics have heard of Carleton. That’s it. No one, even in Minnesota, follows the Carleton sports teams if they aren’t alums. Some schools just get better press, even by the high schools. A classmate of my daughter attends Navy. She got all the attention during the NLI signing (even though technically she wasn’t signing an NLI), she was the ONLY one whose college was mentioned at graduation, she was recognized with the athletes, with the senior honors group at awards night (for like 15 minutes when others got 2 minutes), with the military group. Believe me, there wasn’t a person within 100 miles who didn’t know where she was going to school. Was she any better or smarter than the girl going to MIT (also an athlete) or the Val of the class going to UF or others who got full scholarships? No, but in a military town, Navy has the name recognition.
My kids’ high school’s counselors’ page had a list of colleges that their students were attending. I noticed that Purdue was listed as “Perdue.” Perdue is a brand of chicken. You think that high school counselors would know/ look up the spellings of colleges and universities. It does look silly for them to be bragging where their students got in/attend, when they can’t spell the name of the place. It annoys me, and I so want to correct people on stuff like this, but I let it go. I make mistakes, too. My brother went to Purdue --that’s probably why I know how to spell it. Our local sports teams don’t compete with Purdue–that’s probably why people here don’t know how to spell it.
Oh, the Miami of Ohio enrollees!
Or, Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Congratulations to your D, @LeftofPisa! I hope she loves it there as much as I did.
At least they didn’t spell it “St. Olaf.”
And congratulations! D2 graduated from Carleton this year and had a great experience.
I would probably laugh it off like you have
