It is actually quite funny. D’s school announces ED/EA acceptance on their website each year from the principle. This year of course they are doing the same thing but they put Carleton as Carlton… I understand we are from CA (they only notice/care about the Ivies or the UC) and she is in a magnet program (IB) which is in a lower-middle income area (majority of kids just go to JC or CC if they decided to continue their education). But they don’t even care to spend some time to look up the school’s info? Shouldn’t it be something for her high school to be proud of, right? They usually send less that a handful of kids to Ivies and top schools… I just can’t stop shaking my head and I find it amusing every time I see the wrong spelling.
I doubt they didn’t know what the school was actually called. It was probably just a typo. It happens and unfortunately, sometimes it’s not caught.
I think it is sort of appalling that they are posting the acceptances at all. It is nobody’s business but the kid, their family, and the GC where the kid got in. It puts peer pressure on kids to attend schools that might not be the best fit for them or affordable for their families. If a kid has to back out of ED due to finances, how embarrassing is that to explain? And how do the kids with no acceptances so far feel? Ugh.
But get used to the missing “E”, it does happen a lot.
I’d send an email to whoever to correct it, and probably get a little snarky in it.
Are they posting “kid X got into Carleton” or just “there was an acceptance to Carleton”?
Btw, you did spell it “principle” instead of “principal,” so consider that people do make typos
It’s probably nothing but typo. Sometime people read too much into it, and it was most likely the secretary who typed it, not the GC. I spell Columbia as Colombia sometimes, and vise versa. And forget about Wesleyan (is it e or a), have to google it most of the time. I can’t tell you where is Carleton.
I personally do not think there is anything wrong in posting acceptances. People worry too much about students who didn’t get in, but what about students who got in. I got two kids, one who got in ED and another who didn’t. I think it is fine to spread some good news and tell those students congratulations.
It always gets to me at my current company that they do not publish promotions. Those people worked hard to get promoted. Why not openly recognize their achievements.
Having lived for decades with people thinking Penn is Penn State I’d take this as a simple typo. It happens. I’d send email asking to correct the spelling but nothing more. I don’t expect others to know everything that I or my child may know about her college choices.
I don’t mind acknowledgments as long as it’s consistent. Post all or nothing and celebrate each and every acceptance whether it’s to the local CC, local directional, flagship (not honors) or elite schools. Oh, and not just the IB kids’ acceptances.
Funny how around here it’s fine to publicly acknowledge anything to do with sports, music, etc. but the moment anything academic is published, someone feels bad. Too bad about the kid who isn’t athletic and won’t ever be on the team let alone all-district, but we can’t talk about someone getting into a competitive college (unless it’s for sports).
Like slackermom, I think it’s fine as long as it’s consistent.
As for Carleton, I would send a simple email pointing out the typo. And congrats on your child getting in- it’s a terrific school!
LOL was also going to comment about the principal/principle boo boo. Oops for typos. Some folks confuse Stanford with Samford, Cornell U with Cornell College, etc. And people misspell Berkeley all the time (or confuse with Berklee). Congrats on her acceptance and Don’t sweat the small stuff.
and Swarthmore “isn’t that a girls’ school” back when I went. Or from my contractor when told my son was going there, “never heard of it”. Ya gotta get over it. But get them to correct the spelling.
Way back when I was headed off to college, the head pastor at our church announced each kid’s college at church one Sunday. This was at a Baptist church in California that my family had attended for a couple of years. I was sent off to “Mount Hollow Key” College.
LOL. A yokie by any other name…
When I started my first real job here in the Midwest, some of my colleagues asked where I went to undergrad.
"Wake Forest? I know that school. Isn’t that right outside of Chicago?
People here also confuse Wake with Lake Forrest.
Hey, congrats to your D! She will love it, however it is spelled.
It’s High School. In a few years you will wonder what all the fuss was about.
I can see why it’s annoying. After all, they never seem to misspell the names of the schools / teams they play sports against. Because that’s IMPORTANT.
Maybe the person who typed it went to “John Hopkin” and is tired of misspellings too
It was a simple typo…or someone who just didn’t know. No big deal.
Check out this thread and you’ll find you are not alone:
Plenty of examples of “What school?” and misunderstandings…we’ve just learned to laugh it off. And as I said in that thread, to be honest I wouldn’t have know my kids’ schools only a few short years ago either.
… coming here to post about their HS missing an “e” in the college name … Seriously ???
