I think the thing that may have appealed to seller is my niece offered to let seller stay in studio of four-plex rent-free for 6 months after closing. She really wanted to be the successful bidder and had a limit on how much they could spend. The photo and letter likely helped as well. She did less than sone of the unsuccessful bidders but they may have charged seller rent or been unwilling to rent to him—don’t really know.
I finally got a basil plant to thrive enough to make a basil vinaigrette. I’ve tried every year and I could never get a plant to grow.
Take some of mine! It’s 4 feet tall!
As much as I am horrified by this administration’s decimation of government services, in the past month I have benefitted by 2 instances of federal government efficiency.
First, I was notified of an overpayment of 2022 federal taxes, then received a check including interest.
Second, in response to an inquiry, I was notified that my survivor federal pension offset was reversed, retroactive to the day I started my own social security. The next day, the retroactive payment was direct deposited.
S1 and DiL, newlyweds on their honeymoon, in a car decorated with the usual “just married” sort of stuff. They said they had many many honks, many waves, police cars lighting up and waving, semis honking…and at a rest stop, a much older couple bought them coffees, having ID’d them correctly as the newly married pair. At one place a couple actually waited by their car just to congratulate them and give them a gift card for the area. (which sounds a bit creepy but absolutely wasn’t)
Just when I wonder if we’ve lost all of our humanity, I see the show of solidarity between the Lions and the Falcons players after Morice Norris was knocked unconscious … and hear the decision to end the game out of respect … and I realize that people do still care about each other.
That’s what I wrote a week or so ago. Now there’s more good news. We’ll be visiting them soon and his GF just texted me telling there’d be a queen bed in the guest bedroom.
A guest bedroom in a Manhattan apartment? I didn’t realize those existed.
Sunday was our 40th wedding anniversary. We went out to dinner at one of our regular places and sat at a familiar table in the bar and had a nice steak dinner and a couple drinks. We ended up talking to the couple at the next table and upon learning it was our anniversary they picked up our tab.
A very pleasant surprise.
I love to hear about random acts of kindness. Thanks for sharing.
I bought tickets to a Simon and Garfunkle show/thing (it is at the Broadway theater and I think it is like a live performance with a cover band but also show clips and stuff from their concerts) for Jan. I had found a gift certificate from my daughter from last Christmas (whoops, a reason why I don’t like gift certificates because I can forget about them) so it is free to me.
I’m weirdly excited about this. I go to a lot of Broadway shows and lately they’ve been hit or miss. Hot this one is a hit.
A few small but good things since yesterday:
- some friends and I just started playing Mahjong. Yesterday I got my first Mahjong and won the game

- I finally hired a handyman ( nice guy, lives a block away) and got some repairs done

- Despite what it said on line, the IRS did get my tax return and payment and while I do owe a small amount, it’s really not a big deal, I just have to pay it immediately

I found a check for $62 from my insurance company from February. How it got folded up behind my license in my wallet I’ll never know. Extra good news was it hadn’t expired!
While digging around in the zipper compartments of my purse, I found 2 checks that I had started the process of depositing but never finished. Both were not yet stale so we got to a branch of the bank and deposited them. Haha! Found checks are not something that happens to me often.
Sabadog had a vet visit today and she met the nicest young man in the waiting room. He had taken a Lyft to bring his adorable cat in for care. He was a JMU student and was so wonderful to Sabadog. It made her day. Mine too.
LOL - When sorting out a box of old greeting cards, college junk mail etc from son’s room, I found TWO uncashed 18th birthday cards. Since he had graduated college by then, I just trashed them.
I went to The Lion King last night. What beautiful costumes and puppets and music. And the good news is we did Rush tickets and got great seats for $40. I always check online to see what is available and last week there were some decent tickets, but when I checked yesterday not much left in the orchestra (which i much prefer over the balcony). We got to the front of the line, I asked what they had in the orchestra and she had a lot of ‘golden circle’ tickets which were $188 in advance with ‘special merchandise’ (can you say $50 t-shirt?) and would have been $55 (no t-shirt) last night, then the ticket seller said ‘I have 4 together in row W center’. $40/each. I think someone had traded in their subscription tickets.
It has been 25 years since I’ve seen Lion King. Worth the wait.
Yesterday’s good news was that I registered to win 2 tickets to the Nutcracker and of course some insurance agent called me offering 25 more entries if I’d take a quote from him. Sure I said. He asked my current insurer, etc. He gave me a quote that is HALF my current rate I asked him if it was the same coverage and he said yes (and in fact I think it is better). Then he said if I paid 6 months in advance I’d save another $200/yr. Since this is half the premium, it is more like I’m paying 3 months in advance and getting 3 months for free.
D24 got a 97% on a big presentation for her Fundamentals of Public Health class.
D26 has been accepted to 2 college so far.
Went to see Running Man at the movies with D26 and it was really good.
I’ve got a turkey in the freezer for Thanksgiving.
D24 flies home for Thanksgiving this coming Friday!
I’m having fun researching genealogy.
I just discovered that my great great great great grandfather served in the American Revolution! Nobody in my family knew that. He was born in 1760, so he was VERY young.
I’m still working on getting into the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (the son of the Revolutionary War soldier immigrated to the US and took a lot of settlers to Texas). My contact is a very nice lady, but kind of scattered, to say the least. It’s been several months and we’re not there yet. Getting closer! She was the one who suggested I look into the Daughters of the American Revolution, because often the Texas settlers had served during the war. This is my mom’s side of the family - I wish she were still around so I could tell her all this.
That’s exciting. Admittedly, I am not the member of the family who was ever interested in genealogy but luckily our DS was eager to take on that role. He had a goal of joining Sons of the American Revolution and found a couple potential tracks. It took him years to establish the proof he needed and it was all through my husband’s family line. It just so happened that a local woman who helped him find the proof is someone I was doing volunteer work with in a totally different area. She was the first person who thought my family line was worth a bit of investigation and encouraged DS to do more research. She provided amazing help and I was recently accepted into the Mayflower Society and Daughters of the American Revolution. So far I’ve only been to one DAR event but there are a lot of interesting things planned for our country’s 250th next summer.
