tell me what you think...

I just applied ED…

I’m nervous about my 2.97 unweighted GPA putting a taint on the application…

In terms of everything else, I do alot of EC (trumpet, write and act int plays, Model UN blah, blah, blah) Wrote an essay about using boston common to support the “Best Buddies” friendship program, and I submitted a 4 minute film about a hobo in harvard square…

Let me give you a taste of my essay…

I imagine Boston Common filled with “Best Buddies” posters everywhere.
“Best Buddies” is a program that was started at my school a year ago. The group was designed to form one-one-one relationships with mentally challenged students in our school. This program will continue to provide a social outlet for students with mental disabilities, and the chance for everyone to gain a friendship in our school.
Looking back on my first thoughts about joining, I was a bit hesitant to do so. I thought that the experience might bring me outside of my comfort zone, and I wasn’t sure if I had the time to contribute. Getting over these uncertainties and joining gave me more than I could have ever hoped for.
…some other stuff here and…

This is why I would use Boston Common to demonstrate the cause behind “Best Buddies.” It’s an immensely valuable program founded on the simple principal that everyone needs a friend. We live in a world that is becoming increasingly more focused on image. A teenager in today’s typical world would probably think that befriending a mentally challenged student isn’t the “coolest” thing to do. This program helps to dismiss that horrible delusion.
I hope that demonstrating “Best Buddies” on a large scale to the Boston community would give the program the attention it deserves. This organization ought to have the publicity that other causes do. The opportunity to participate in this group has opened up many new experiences for me; an event at Boston Common would be a chance to bring the same experiences to others.
… followed by conclusion (don’t want to post the whole thing in fear of plagerism)

tell me, how realistic are my chances as a film major or TV/video

What’s your SAT/ACT?
And i think a lot of film is talent based, honestly.

1940

730- Critical Reading 680- Writing and 530- MATH

Oh, yeah…you should be fine. From what i hear, Emerson doesn’t take the math SAT score as all that much. And you’ve got great reading/writing scores.

And- really- i think that a lot of Film will be talent. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have you submit a tease of your work.
(Which i think they’ll love, by the by…i mean, i think it’s interesting, t’least)

I have the feeling they won’t look as fondly at me. I have the same GPA, with a 30 on my ACT…but i’m applying to Writ, Lit, and Pub…i sent in work, but the fact that they didn’t ask for it leads me to believe that admission is more focused on your numbers. ::grumbles::

Definitely keep me posted with whether or not you get in, though~

question, i have a 2.4/2.5, 1910 SAT scores. im looking into this school as a super reach, im interested in journalism. im sending along my journalism portfolio, will such a low gpa be considered if the portfolio shows some promise to supplement?

From what i hear, they look at your grades a lot more than your standardized test scores. At open houses i’ve been to, they’ve said ‘a bad SAT/ACT won’t make or break you.’ As grades are MY problem, i asked if this held true for GPA. They just said that i should have a good reason for shoddy grades.

If you’re AMAZING, then i think they could bypass GPA. A lot, from what i hear, is essays and resume; when you’re below their set standards, that is.

Good luck!

::crosses fingers:: December 15th, 15th, 15th. Aurgh!

i think the rigor of your classes also has a lot to do with your gpa. if that is unweighted and you’re taking a lot of APs it won’t look so bad although i do remember them saying at my tour that gpa is a big factor in admissions, but if you submit creative stuff i’m sure that can help a whole lot.

for film potential is a big factor as well. and passion. i have a friend at north carolina school of the arts for film, which is harder to get into talent wise than emerson, and he said he had no doubt that i’d get in there because i love film so much. he also said it’d look really good that i already had used final cut pro and all this other editing software, so i made sure to sneak that into my film submission form. they have interviews at ncsa though, so i’m still really nervous about emerson.

My classes have been pretty rigorous; all honors and AP except for Math [until this year…]
I did submit some of my writing…but i don’t know. I don’t know if it was good, or anything…and AAH!

I never hear about people either applying to or at Emerson’s Writing Lit and Pub program; it’s always film or theatre. And since those are so talent-based, it’s sort of hard to tell…

And if you’re fluent in editing software, you’re probably at least semi-decent…i think you would prolly stand a good chance [not knowing your stats at all, of course,]
What did you submit for your supplemental thing?

the creative sample for film? i sent in an eight minute film done in final cut pro, it was a tell tale heart. i also sent in an extra short film after i went to the information session in my city. it was only like a minute but i did it at a broadcasting camp so it was really professional and all that jazz.

Ooh, Tell Tale Heart…love it.

And like… i’m sure they’ll love it. It obviously has a lot of time and effort put into it, y’know?

I wouldn’t worry SO much.
