Telluride Association Summer Program ( TASP ) 2008

I just thought of another thing:

If we were to accept your view of government, I believe that many people’s opinions on gun control would be changed, because laws (or the lack thereof) must reflect the very government upon which they are based.

Because we (or rather, I) began this debate under the assumption that we were attempting to decide whether gun control was right under the current system of government, then it is my interpretation that gun control reflects and upholds the intentions and necessities of our government.

Of course, all of my arguments would fail if one did not believe that people living in a nation were entitled to live. But as it happens, our nation believes that, and as such, I believe that gun control is necessary to uphold the very foundation of our nation.

to them, owning a gun is a basic everyday item, not the powerful object it really is. i think we just about beat this topic to death.

Oh, I see how you interpreted my sentence. Yeah, that would be really confusing… I wasn’t quite that deep! :)

Ugh, I’m exhausted and my brain isn’t actually capable of following the conversation anymore. I’ll see you all tomorrow, hopefully! Night!

disney, we need a nickname for you

Government as it is is bound to not represent the people. I mean really, why do we need a government? Why do we all have to be united under one system as a country?

It’s interesting how so many gun-owners have managed to diminish the killing value of a gun. The way we see the gun portrayed today in the media (movies, video games) and everyday life (hunting) it is a source of ENTERTAINMENT, not a deadly weapon. Sad really.

So are you against testing for ownership of any types of guns D-Yu?

what would you rather have donny?

I’ll check in tomorrow. Sleep tight, everybody, and remember, only two or so more weeks!

I so badly want to answer that question, mls, but I’ve seriously got to start my homework. Think of it as a cliff-hanger. DUN-DUN-DAH!

i’m not against testing. i’m just saying it will be difficult to incorporate that into reality. but i guess anything is possible when you’re world dictator :)

fridge, i have to go soon for about 30 minutes. will you still be here?

ahh i should mosey off too. ive been writing a dbq for two hours now. ill check in every now and again though.

Unfortunately, I’ll only be here for the NEXT 30 minutes or so. I don’t have school tomorrow, but my parents are already shouting at me to go to bed, and I’ve been ignoring them for a half-hour.

If we lived in a anarchial (word?) society, it wouldn’t last long. People are working for their own survival, their own self-interests, and would be quick to jump to whatever means necessary to further protect their survival. The most effective way to ensure personal protection would not be through an every-man-for-himself life structure, but more likely achieved through a social contract, the formation of kinship groups, etc.

If anyone else is going to bed also, please say so first! I don’t want to be the dork left here all by myself…No school tomorrow! Yessuh.

panic - gotta love those DBQ’s. I miss APUSH. The APWH system so weird.

Ahh…the purpose of government. The more broad this debate gets, the more personal-beliefish it gets (at least for me), so I’m going to just say my belief about government (because it really doesn’t have evidence.)

I believe that by being born, every person receives the opportunity to live a life pursuing whatever they want, so long as it doesn’t interfere with another person’s ability to pursue whatever they want.

The interpretations of this statement are endless. One could argue for a communist system of government all the way up to an anarchist system of government (or non-government). My belief is that the BEST way to achieve this to its fullest extent is sort of a balance: Government is necessary to achieve this, but that government MUST be small. This is where my libertarian beliefs come in. The government must provide everyone the opportunity to live, the opportunity to go far in life without taking away things from others. A large government would make it impossible to go very far in people’s pursuit of what they want, but a complete lack of government would make it impossible for people to even have the opportunity to get anywhere. This can get tricky: Do people get to bestow their happiness, or rather, their “pursuits” upon their children? Some would argue that everyone must start equally, and thus people must not raise their children in a bigger house with more money with more “happiness” or with more of whatever their parents’ “pursuits” were with more opportunities to go far in their own “pursuits.” Things like this are difficult, but honestly a lack of government would be a step backward in my views about the nature of life and its “pursuits.”

Now I’m going to bed, before either of you get us killed. Or worse: expelled! (For some reason, when I go to bed, that quote always comes to my head…)

G’Night! :)

sounds like our current government, with less listening to the social contract. how is world history im sort or considering it for next year. (always a subjective question, but who cares)

I know. I’m completely aware that my opinion is most definitely influenced by living under such a system. Hopefully I will be able to broaden my horizons as I progress through life, but as it is, that’s how I see it.

Now I’m really going to bed.

this thread is golden. what with the challenging me to think and all.

Extremely flawed reasoning:

I thought silence was golden.
But apparently silence is for cowardly imbeciles.
This thread is chatty, not silent.
Ergo this thread is now golden.

i have a greater appreciation for people willing to look at their society’s flaws and discuss them. isnt this what you wanted wink?

My haiku contribution:

TASP, little wonder
I live vicariously
Through your rainbow sieve.

Wow. That made no sense at all.
