And we’re back! I’m sick again today, so I’m freaking out about how much I’m missing.
Anywho, I’ve been reading over the past couple of pages and somebody, i can’t remember who, and I’m too lazy to go back to find out, said that only the people that scored in the 98th percentile of the PSAT’s were sent letters by Telluride, but I got a letter and only scored a 1980.
The funny thing is, I THREW AWAY THE LETTER! I had gotten notifications from bunches of other summer programs, but they all cost tons of money, so I just threw them away without bothering to open them after a while, so the TASP letter went down the garbage!

The only reason I ended up applying was because of the collegeboard website. I was researching info on NMS, but one thing led to another, and i stumbled upon a page that mentioned this thing called “The Telluride Association,” which sounded vaguely familiar, so I did a wikipedia search and fell in love.

Wow, this was really long. Anyway, the whole point of this little story was to ask everybody, how did you find out about TASP?

Now i have to wait six hours until somebody gets out of school to reply. ):

Hudson - generally TASP sends out brochures to everyone who scores in the 98th percentile or higher, but they may also mail them to other candidates (maybe a teacher nominated you?). A 198 might be enough, I don’t know. The National Merit commended cut-off is usually around the 99th percentile, which in some states is as high as 223, and in others as low as 200, so a 198 could easily make the 98th percentile. Did your score report say it was lower than that?

I found out through the mail. There was some mix-up in the postal office, so it arrived a few weeks late, leaving me to frantically write my essays last-minute (okay, that was partially my fault, what of it?). I initially almost threw it out because I thought it was going to be some super-expensive summer college type thing that did not interest me at all. But my parents make me go through all my junk mail (hey, they’re Indian) and when I saw it was free, I thought it might be worth applying. I came to CC to see if it was really a credible program, and I also know two people who have gone in the past. Ultimately, I decided to apply…and turned my application in at the very last minute.

Yeah, somebody else! I don’t remember exactly what percentile I scored in, my benevolent leader, but i know I qualified, by the skin of my teeth, for the NMS competition, but I know I’m just going to be “commended.”

I can only wish one of my teachers liked me enough to nominate me. (:
I’m not a “bad-seed” or anything, but I don’t think I’ve ever talked to any of my teachers before, unless being called on for an answer counts.

My winter break ended ages ago. Then again, i live in Florida, so I should be happy that I get a “winter” break at all.

How much time did you spend on your essays? I spent a couple of weeks, but if you subtract school, sleep, babysitting, etc., I probably only spent about a full 20 hrs. or so. I recycled, like, half of my essays. :P

Ack…I get this sinking feeling in my stomach whenever I think about my essays, because I only spent the very last weekend (3 days) working on them at all. I wrote my entire conflict essay in the last hour. I didn’t recycle anything though (which would have been a smart idea), so I ended up spending maybe 15 hours total. I didn’t even proofread! It was final exams week, and I really wasn’t thinking straight…

Perhaps I will just have to persuade the reviewers a little with my massive armies.

This is our second winter break…It’s actually a really nice day today (i.e. sunny and only slightly below freezing).

My teachers don’t like me very much either, mostly because I’m pretty obnoxious in my attempts to prove them wrong. But I think my recommendation was probably pretty good–from the one teacher who can tolerate me. :)

oh, the recommendation. I don’t know about mine. My teacher kept putting it off, but she ended up writing it for me the day before it was do because I pretty much told her, “you’re really screwing me over, lady.” It was only six sentences and didn’t even take up even a quarter of the page, but I had take whatever I could.
I didn’t proof either. I never really do. I’m too much of a perfectionist for it to be productive.
I tried getting my siblings, both in college, to read them, but they were to positive for me to trust them, if you catch my drift. I mean, it’s like when a pregnant woman asks if she’s fat, you lie your pants off.

The reviewers probably don’t put much weight in the recommendation anyway. My teacher was amazing about getting it in on time and stretching it out to almost a page…but she only put one copy in the envelope :P

I didn’t have any time for anyone else to proof my essays, because, as has been established in the past, I am a procrastinator and left everything to the last weekend. I’m even procrastinating at this very moment…

I’m actually going back and rereading my TASP essays right now. Whenever I write something that I think is half-way decent and look at it again a few weeks later, I am in shock at what a moron I sound like. I can’t help but cringe at them.

And what, my great leader, are you supposed to be doing?

That is so true. These notifications can not come soon enough. I’m driving my self insane looking over what I wrote, rereading other people’s essays in comparison to mine(with mine always coming out as the loser), and reading last year’s tasp thread.

Oh, let’s see…
A paper for AP English
Chapter outlines of the textbook for APWH
AP Calc worksheets
Zoology worksheet
AP Psych – read a novel and analyze it (psychoanalytically), read and outline two chapters of the textbook
All due on Monday

Well, that sounds fun. Zoology? I wish my school had that.
From my weekend, I’ve got to work Saturday and Sunday, but like I’ve mentioned, I’m sick, more specifically, strep throat. Anyway, I can’t call in sick my third day of work, so I’m dreading tomorrow. Well, that’s enough self-pity for me. I wish we could get some more people, yo quiero un debato(sp?).

As much as I try not to compare my essays to others’, I can’t help but realize how cliche my topics were…and how arrogant I sound…in comparison.

Work when you’re sick? Oh, that sucks. I’ve had up to ten-hour double-shifts with the stomach flu. That was a nightmare. Where do you work/what do you do?

Zoology is an interesting class. We talk a lot about sex (well, animal sex…but still). We spend a lot of time looking at/dissecting animals. You should hear the cries of triumph when someone announces “I’ve found the gonads!” during lab.

Where is everybody? I’m itching for debate too…

Who wouldn’t yell in triumph upon finding gonads? I know I do.

I work in a nut stand in the mall. It’s called “the nutty bavarian”, no joke.
Ten hour shift with stomach flu!? Please tell me you were awarded the best employee of the month/ever title.

ok that is totally not cool i got in the 99th percentile for PSATS and I never got a TASP brochure! unless my parents thought it was junk and threw it out, but i usually get to the mail way before my parents. I was really sad I didnt =(
haha i just requested one from online after…i had heard about TASP from here last year

wink:
ok this is really wierd haha I was/is in the same exact situation as you. I didn’t like my essays at all (except for one of them) because I only spent that last weekend on them because it was midterm week and I was completely stressed out. I’m not completely sure my conflict essay was even about a conflict and I wrote it in the last hour too. I wasn’t able to proofread except for 1 essay.
Perhaps I will just have to persuade the reviewers a little with my massive armies.
andddd today is the beginning of our second winter break too
lmao
good weather =)

most of my teachers don’t like me. I only really pay attn in two of my classes this year: Lang and Stats, and previously History except that my stupid counselor didn’t fit history into my schedule this year which sucks since thats like my favorite subject…
so yeah. during math I am very productive and get about 2-3 classes worth of hw done, during french I either take a full-period nap or do hw or read my friend’s issue of Nylon, which I forgot to put on my book list. During Econ me and the 2 guys that sit by me have really gossipy conversations and point out how much of an idiot my teacher is. During Physics my teacher just keeps talking even though everyone in the class is having side conversations and participating in our ongoing hangman tournament.

Unfortunately no fancy awards…but I did get paid a time-and-a-half. I’m actually unemployed at the moment…too much work to hold down a job during the school year, being the procratinater that I am.

The Nutty Bavarian…I actually bothered to Google that. It looks interesting (I love nuts–maybe because I’m a bit of a nut myself). I suppose you don’t have to do any embarrassing dances or sing jingles to attract customers?

Oh, poor alamode! I’m sure you did fine on your essays (everyone else /thinks/ they did a bad job…but when I read their essays, they’re somehow always amazing compared to mine). At least your break is /starting/…my break is /ending/. :(

Most definitely, no crazy nut costume. The job comes with a cool t-shirt, though. I’m a sucker for t-shirts, I can’t explain it. Seriously, my school gives out t-shirts to people that donate blood at our annual blood drive, and what’s driving me to participate isn’t the whole “saving another person’s life” thing but rather, I would get a free t-shirt.

Has anyone else been getting crazy amounts of letters from colleges? I know that sounds kinds “braggy,” but I’m going through my mail right now, besides its rarely a school I would consider “prestigious.”

I get more mail than my parents now…usually 5-10 letters a day from various colleges. I feel kind of guilty, because I mostly just throw them out without looking at them. I’ve gotten a couple from “prestigious” universities…but most of them are from random places I’ve never heard of.

I’ll come back later in case anyone shows up :)

I love the colleges that try to jazz up their letter by trying to sound like a teenager wrote it. Honest to god, one of the letters I got said, “we totally get this is a really tough decision, Stephen.” For a second, I thought they were going to say “Bro” instead of my name.

lol it is soo annoying. think of the trees. and im really proud you guys like blew through four pages in a day that is great. and my schools gives t-shirts too but i dont give blood those needles are huge!!
my psat scores were depressing no NMS for me. but i want to know if i got into tasp but i dont think i have the gonads to call.
