Telluride Association Summer Program ( TASP ) 2008

well i know from being a human that it would be compared to what superman does.

A couple other kids and I had this debate with a teacher (it was a little bizarre, but whatever): which superpower would you rather have, flight or invisibility?

I see that D-Yu has arisen from the dead.
I’ll be back in a half-hour, after dinner…

flight of course

unless you want to work for the government (idiotic, they’ll try to assassinate you sooner or later) or sneak into the opposite sex’s locker (perverted!) room ;)

obviously flight it is the less perverted of the two

For invisibility to really be great, you’d need permeability too so you could walk through walls.

Has anyone seen Jumper? It kind of relates, in that the main character has the ability to “jump” (read: teleport) anywhere at any moment. I absolutely love the idea of this power, and the concept and action sequences of the movie are very enjoyable and entertaining.

However, the story has no plot or interesting characters/character development or good acting. The result is a rather bad movie.

if ur invisble, would all the clothes ur wearing be invisible too? if not… well …

what would ur favorite superpower be if you could choose?

Well, if you’ve got flight, will you meet with air resistence and decreased air pressure? Will you become winded after just a few minutes? How fast will you really be able to go, and how high?

I think that extroverts will generally choose flight while introverts will generally choose invisibility. Of course, there are a lot of set-backs to consider when choosing either of them.

Invisibility would be kind of cool…eavesdropping on conversations, sneaking into places undetected. Then again, people would be able to sense you anyways (even if they can’t see /where/ you are, they’ll know you’re there if you make sounds or smell). And I wouldn’t want to walk around naked all day…

Favorite power: Super-stink. Just kidding…Healing abilities, maybe? I can’t think of any immediate issues or set-backs, like for some of the more popular ones (strength, flight, etc.)

flying could get rid of the need for cars. but i would love to be able to move stuff.

It would also be kind of cool to “bend” an element like on Avatar.
Necromany would be interesting.
But some superpowers require great self-control and discipline, especially the more destructive ones. Maybe it’s better to stick to the safe side if you don’t know how to handle your powers.

power to the know the right answer or what is the ideal answer if subjective … i’ll rock the SAT’s, poker, college apps…

Definitely flight.

But if they ran out of flight stuff…
I guess I could settle for invisibility.
Neh.

So guys I have just come through the worst case of food poisoning ever.

I ate at jack-in-the-box on wednesday night, studied all night for my physics test the next day, checked online for my SAT scores, and threw up all over my keyboard.

Again.

And again.

I had to replace it since the stink killed everything next to it.

And the score I got didn’t make my parents very sympathetic towards me…

Moral of my story ^

NEVER eat at Jacks

Ugh… I’m so sorry Secshisuhee. I got sick after eating some slightly suspect chicken wings at a party last Saturday. That was a miserable night and I only threw up once.

Oops…

Did I disgust everyone so much that they’re not posting anymore?

The only fast food place I ever eat at is Taco Bell (which, for all intents and purposes, is as far as you can get from a grease pit in the fast food realm)…and I even get a little queasy there, sometimes. I hope you feel better soon!

i have never ate at taco bell. dont think i ever will. had a bad incident with a chicken burrito once…

I’m a TASP lurker, but I have to say:

Flight isn’t practical at all. Think about applying flight to a modern situation. Someone seen flying would be tracked down by the media, dogged by researchers and quite possibly taken into forced custody by the government for questioning and research (think Roswell, but with a debate over the flyer’s rights). If the government didn’t take that person in for research purposes, then they would at least prohibit that person from flying because it would interfere with air traffic and control laws. In any situation, a flying person would be at best a freak that couldn’t live a normal life (thanks to the media and research hounds) and at worst a criminal. Choosing flying isn’t logical.

Contrariwise, invisibility has tons of potential for use in the modern world. It could be used in social situations (ex. evesdropping) for learning what people really think of something, which is incredibly useful, and it could be used both to benefit society (ex. doing good deeds anonymously) and more effectively to benefit FROM society (ex. Shoplifting, sneaking into places with only camera security and locks which could be picked. Murder. Pretty much all criminal activity would be facilitated by invisibility). Invisibility would be so much more practical in the modern world than flying would be.

I’d take the power that I could actually use versus the power that would get me arrested and turn me into a pariah, thank you. Now, back to being a lurker. An invisible lurker.

(edit: Jeez, by the time I’d posted, you’d all stop talking about powers and started talking about Taco Bell.)

though i appreciate the seriousness i think invisibility would lead you a pariah too. and where would the trust be in eavesdropping on people.

and hehe we are jumpy that way. you should join us more often. :)

You’ve missed the whole point in invisibility: NO ONE SEES YOU. You wouldn’t be caught. How on Earth are your friends and family supposed to know that you’re being invisible? Heat vision? Telepathy?

(I knew I spelled eavesdropping wrong. Evesdropping looked too much like eyesdropping).
