The thread’s lack of direction reminds me of an assembly I went to in 7th grade. It was student-run, and while some anti-drug presenter was preparing to go onstage, the two students at the podium had to stall for time, so one asked the audience, “So…who here like bananas?”

It’s charming how one mostly remembers things that have absolutely no point or consequence.

See, there’s something we can all agree on despite our differences: Flight and invisibility both cater to voyeurism. Porn sales will go down when you can just fly to your sexy neighbor’s window or slip in behind them at the door.

I think we should have a for/against debate on porn.

I’m for all porn whose actors can and do legally consent to it. This obviously excludes child and bestial porn. I don’t see what’s wrong with it; masturbation does no biological harm, and any confusion over whether masturbation is immoral or not is just religious and societal propaganda. Actors who enter the porn industry willingly are paid. It’s a business as much as anything else, and some of its entrepreneurs do quite well for themselves.

I challenge you all to give me reasons against porn other than “It’s disgusting” (which is an opinion) and “It’s degrading”. If you must use “It’s degrading”, give me a REASON it’s more degrading than women’s sexualization in the non-naked media. How do it sexualize women MORE than other forms of media do? How does it contribute to negative body images more than the swimsuit contest in the Miss America pagaent? It doesn’t.

Of course, my friends and I did name our group The Porn Posse. I’m a chick, by the way.

And bestial porn?! Please tell me that this does not include animals, and that it’s a type of computer graphics porn.
I will go on a humane society rampage, if not.

So, complementary topic- What about prostitution? Can you really have porn and not prostitution? Porn is pretty much legal everywhere because of freedom of expression, but some states illegalize prostitution- private porn, really.

Sec: I assume there’s bestial porn out there somewhere. I haven’t seen any, but I’m sure it exists. Anyway, we’re excluding both that and child porn because I think we all agree that those are illegal for a good reason. We’re talking about normal, consenting porn.

the only argument you can possibly make for porn is free enterprise. AND considering that we spent like 20 page discussing love, there won’t be a lot of porn supporters here

Earil: Prostitution is NOT porn. Prostitution involves the sale of a living human being. Porn is the sale of PICTURES of human bodies. Although I could and would argue that prostitution by an individual of that individual alone (with no pimping whatsoever) is perfectly legitimate, but I think you all would lynch me.

D-Yu: That IS the argument I make. What’s yours other than “It’s disgusting” (true, but only an opinion), and “It’s degrading” (no more than other forms of media that sexualize woman and induce negative body images, ex. Miss America, the most wholesome contest in the world that happens to judge women partially based on their appearance in a swimsuit)?

I remember reading in some business magazine (yeah, I know, I actually enjoy it, though) that there is a site called YouPorn, or something like that. I cracked up so hard, I almost gagged.

And although I agree that it is completely within people’s rights to view or make pornography, it degrades women to a level of toys or pets.

Prostitution is obviously more…physical. There are issues of sex slavery that arise from prostitution too. It’s literally love for sale, and obviously degrading (it is a form of selling oneself into slavery, or a part of oneself, in my opinion). It’s one thing to watch, and it’s another to do.

I personally don’t care what a grown adult legally and consensually does with his/her body, although I do find these things disgusting /and/ degrading.

Prostitution involves the sale of a service. I’m not buying a plumber when I call him to come fix my toilet, nor am I buying a masseuse when I pay him or her to give me a massage. I argue that porn is prostitution because the actors are paid to have sex with each other. Being paid for sex = prostitution.

Sec: So what? Are you claiming that other forms of media DON’T degrade women? Are you claiming that the lack of women over 125 pounds in the media is perfectly healthy? Are you claiming that the swimsuit contests in beauty paegents is just another way to judge the contestants’ personalities?

Porn doesn’t turn women into toys or pets, however. It turns them into sexual creatures. The porn that we’re discussing is CONSENSUAL; do I need to define this word? It also turns men into sexual creatures, but I don’t hear you complaining about that.
