the only thing separating us from animals is our ability to reason, logic, and feel emotion. porn is primal, physical indirect enjoyment. animals could do that (as mentioned before) therefore, if you are a professional idk what you call it…pornographer?, in my mind SLUT, you’re no different than an animal.

D-Yu: Opinion, darling. Cite me some facts that being a slut is illegal.

Earil: That argument only legitimizes prostitution, and it’s a good point. If being paid for having sex in a movie (even a movie where the sex is just to make an artistic point) is prostitution according to your definition, then independant street prostitution where a woman (or man) sells her/his own body is simple business. Is it any different than the Tattooed Lady selling tickets for people to see her tatoos, or for the Rubber Boy to sell tickets for his act? How is it different? They’re all selling their own personal ability for profit. That’s America, baby.

Prostitution isn’t simply a service. There is a whole empire behind it, and often women are physically bound to the business. In that sense, it can be a form of enslavement.

Porn is, among so many other things in society, degrading to women.
How many men actually star in these films? It’s an industry originally made for men to enjoy looking at women. Women, in turn, are portrayed as sex toys without personality.

D-Yu, actually, porn is something that separates us from the animals. Very, very few animals have sex just for fun like we do. Bonobos and dolphins come to mind- both very intelligent for animals. Porn is mostly for masturbation, we’ll assume. Masturbation is probably the most useless thing evolution gave us ever- it wastes energy, time and doesn’t contribute to the survival of the species. But, humans love it. In that way, it’s like art or music- not necessary for survival, but can you imagine a society without music, art, or unnecessary sex?

Sec, I agree, bestiality is just disgusting–a total violation of animal rights. It’s basically animal rape: there is no way to determine if sex with animals is consensual or not…

Sex slavery is not the same as prostitution.

The prostitution workforce should be made up of people who are willing to sell their bodies, and should be will aware of the dangers that they are imposing on themselves.

I am completely against sex slavery, and I can’t think of any argument that could effectively defend it.

Wolfbane- exactly. Obviously, the fact that it’s illegal causes complications with the system- if it were legal and clean, safe brothels emerged, would there be problems such as sexual slavery or abusive pimps? Probably not as much.

Yeah, it’s mostly degrading, Sec, but it’s still protected as a freedom of expression. All we can hope for is a smart-ish population that realizes that treating women like dirtbags is against the ideals of country.

Keep the debate on topic, guys. CONSENSUAL, ADULT, HUMAN PORN. Not prostitution; not bestiality. Don’t use the Chewbacca defense (courtesy of South Park).

Sec: There are actually many male porn actors that make/made a living from the business. Ex: Rocco Sifredi, Ron Jeremy, and Peter North. Are you saying that men are given more personality in porn than women are? In porn, the function of a man is to put his parts into the woman’s parts. Porn isn’t a movie with a plot; it’s a montage of sex, and that’s on the part of both gender actors. Porn may have been created for men, but part of the empire now caters to women; women are sexual beings too, or are you denying now that women can enjoy sex and masturbation?

It’s not termed sex slavery (that is a different institution); that’s the actual purchasing of a human for the purposes of sex. But if you do take a look at the red-light district, you’d probably see that many women are forcibly bound to brothels and whatnot either for financial reasonsor drugs or whatever. I don’t think prostitution should be illegal as long as its completely consensual and between adults, but our governments need to be more careful in laying down the stipulations for legally selling love.

if you possess a brain and wish to use it, you won’t turn to porn/prostitution for a living. what i was talking about earlier was that any animal will mate, have physical urges, have sex, but can’t think like humans. if you only use your body, your ability is no more than that of animals

yes you have a right to showcase porn and prostitution, but that doesn’t make it decent

Wink: Agreed. Love the phrase, “legally selling love”, by the way. Sounds like a bumper sticker. “Licensed to Sell Love in the State of New York”.

D-Yu: How on Earth is what you’re saying related to this argument? We’re talking about the legitimacy of porn, not Darwinism. You seem incapable of admitting that “That’s disgusting” is an unsupported OPINION, which is not viable in a court of law.

I don’t think it’s necessarily fair for a bunch of middle-class high-schoolers to analyze the motivations that lead someone to enter the business of porn and prostitution. Sadly, this is one of the more active discussions on this thread in a long time. :)

Is anyone denying the right for an adult to willingly participate in pornography?

if i’m saying that porn doesn’t make a woman any better than an animal i’m PROBABLY thinkin that porn isn’t legit. no, we can’t ban it, but we can put restrictions on it.

let’s face it… the human race is majorly f-ed up. interesting how when we’re toddlers, we know almost nothing about this $hit that goes around us, money, sex, greed, racism…

Sec: You’ve admitted that almost all forms of media give men dominance, so are you saying that fashion, movies, and other cultural phenomena are “disgusting” and “degrading”? Are you going to boycott the cinema? I don’t think so. There’s an example of the American double-standard: Porn is called disgusting, but anorexic role models for young women are permissible and male heroes in movies are the norm.

Earil: Thank you for both the support of decency’s irrelevance and for the Larry the Cable Guy reference.

I think that the American culture is enthusiastically working to seperate sex and love. After centuries of taboo, it is finally becoming permissible to admit that both men and women have sexual urges for people whom they do not love. However, the double-standard is still prevalent in many places; in the American public’s opinion, sex for a man is not nearly as related to love as sex is for a woman. This can’t be confirmed as true or false, but our culture takes it for true (except in very liberal places. Like many colleges).
