Then should cocaine, meth, and heroine be legal?

Those drugs are all /much/ more highly addictive and destructive than marijuana. I would say no, because legalization of those drugs would result in increased crime as people scramble for money to pay for their habits. I doubt weed would result in such increases in crime (it is relatively cheap and accessible, and much easier to quit).

I suppose you will now proceed to rip apart my argument?

nope if i can smoke a ciggie i can smoke a joint.
i personally find it useless but live and let live.

if all of them were legal no matter how lethal, it would be less expensive and people would be addicted but it would be like crack cocaine, people selling tv’s and such small time robberies. it would be something liveable. rehab might be full, and prisons too. but eventually these people would die in alleys or their homes and maybe others would learn and it wont be that serious.

and in general america’s war on drugs was a complete failure, let us stop wasting money we could use more wisely.

It’s worth noting, though, that the founding fathers believed that we should be able to ingest whatever substances we want. I don’t remember where they wrote it, but they wrote that into some document or another. Technically, our country is founded around the principles of men who believed that all drugs should be legal (of course, it doesn’t translate very well to reality, as was proved both with alcohol in America and with opium in China).

I say they should all be legal.

Why would crime increase? If the government legalizes it, crime would go down as more people would get into the selling business. Free, unhindered markets would produce cheaper products to the users. Cheaper product means no need for crime.

As well, I think with drugs out in the open, less people would be drawn to them. They would become as banal as energy drinks. Look at Norway, the best nation in the world, in my opinion. No drug is illegal, yet they have on of the lowest drug usage and crime numbers in the world.

I should probably add that it’s my constitutional right to do whatever I want with my body, even if that means wreaking it.

in theory hudson but there will always be people who are addicted and they blow through their stash and have no way of getting money. some of these drugs are highly addicted, no matter how easily someone can get to them.
and here here to norway.

I don’t agree with Hudson, but I have to admit that some of his points can be proved. Alcohol-related crime rates increased almost threefold during Prohibition. However, I do believe that making drugs legal would increase drug use or at least stagnate it. Addicts who have their addiction made legal are hardly likely to seek help for themselves.

Oh, I fully agree with the point that drug legalization would initially cause a spike in drug usage and crime, but this will stabilize over time. Once a crack pipe can be bought next to a pack of marlboros, the situation would have reached an equilibrium.

Sorry, this is a really hurried, sloppy reply –

Norway is different from the U.S. in many ways, in government structure, societal structure/hierarchy, education, standard of living, etc. I don’t think the two are entirely comparable if you don’t consider these factors. European society is radically different from America…

There were times past when drugs such as opium (heroin) were legal –> this leads to all kinds of problems. The drugs have to be supplied from somewhere. Would you encourage the expansion of opium industries in Afghanistan, Mexico, etc.? Because that hasn’t boded well for human rights in the past, and I doubt the government would support its populace getting high anyway by subsidizing such industries. If there is scarcity, there will still be violence and crime over a limited supply.

Energy drinks aren’t addictive, certainly not with in the powerful ways cocain and heroin are. These drugs can’t just be quit when people lose interest in them –> they are lifelong addictions, and the government will probably start having to pick up rehab tabs. Highly expensive methadone clinics will rise as well…

People on drugs such as cocaine and heroin are often highly dangerous. In suffering from withdrawal symptoms, they will often stop at nothing to get their fix, and exposing more people to access to these drugs wouldn’t solve things, in my opinion. Thse drugs will likely always be expensive, and widespread use would mean those without money will turn more to crime to achieve their ends.

Just out of curiosity, if you can do anything with your body, is it your constitutional right to commit suicide?

lol the imagery to your statement cracks me up donny

and fridge it is not so much that you Should kill yourself, but that you have the option.

“Addicts who have their addiction made legal are hardly likely to seek help for themselves.”

Then these people will die. The world is overpopulated as is, we need to start tossing bodies overboard, if you catch my drift.

Really, I think what the world needs right now is a meteor hit or some other Earth-shattering event that would thin out the population as well as to put the human race on a better path.

Yep, I think you should be able to sign out early from the race.

In theory, I’m all for the legalization of drugs. In practice, I know people whose lives have been totally and completely screwed over by the choices other people have made on crack.

There’s no constitutional right, but I don’t think it should be illegal. If you attempt suicide and call the cops, you can be sentenced to a year in prison. That’s probably not helpful for depressed people.

Donny, that’s awfully bleak.

It’s so easy to say that when you don’t think that you’d be one of the ones who’d die. Would you be willing to die to put the human race on that path, Hudson?

What you say is true enough, but it’s hypocrisy to say it unless you’re willing to put your body where your ego is.

no it is motivation to get the job done right. if you jump off a bridge and die they cant touch you. if you punk out and want to give them a show, you get arrested.

hi everyone, i’m trying to do some overdue homework and debate at the same time. if you legalize all drugs, the number of crazy people would increase because of the greater availability. they can buy more; they would do more irrational acts. alhtough i say its the peoples bodys. the gov should find away to protect other people from drugees, not banning the drugs themselves

edit: get a suicide center. its ur life, ur not harming others.

you are harming your loved ones.

I vote for creating the public suicide booths from Futurama! Who’s with me? We can put them in Los Angeles and let the good times role.

But in all seriousness, the only way that the government could make suicide illegal effectively would be to put legal penalties on the loved ones of the criminal. You can’t threaten a dead man.

Ego? You have never meet me in person obviously.

I’d be okay with kicking the bucket. I’d rather not, but the thought of my non-existence doesn’t scare me. I’d rather not die in the next ten minutes, but If I did, that’s just the way that things go. Obviously, if somebody is coming at me with a knife, I’m running in the opposite direction, but if my death is inevitable, such as by my meteor example, I’d be okay.

I’ve often thought that if scientists knew where the meteor was going to hit, I’d set up a chair at it’s contact point. BEST DEATH EVER!

Suicide should be legal but dissuaded. In my experience, suicide just means that you’re lonely. That can be rectified, usually easily.

And on the drug topic, I hate to say it, but government run crack houses? So current druggies can go get their fix in a safer environment. They get locked in a room with their drug of choice and are allowed out once they’re sober. Obviously, a ridiculous chance of abuse, but it’s just a thought.
