Telluride Association Summer Program ( TASP ) 2008

Everyone has an ego, darling. It’s part of the human condition. Without an ego, every man would internally collapse from the weight of his own irrelevance in the universe.

If you want to cull the weak, then you have to either admit your own ego or be willing to take the blade to your own throat. The public does not think highly of kings who lecture paupers for their poverty.

For people that are suicidal, government run hug centers. Conveniently located next door to the government run crack houses. (:

Legalization of highly addictive drugs extends beyond just the personal issue of “it’s my body and I’ll do what I want with it.” It’s an economic issue, an issue of globilization, healthcare, the role of govt. in rehabilitation, the effects on dependents, etc. Society will suddenly become responsible for a bunch of crazed drug addicts (even if for a short time); like I said, rehab tabs and methadone clinics to keep normal people like me from them. Think of the economic downturn that will result in an already failing economy.

High-risk people will be more likely to do drugs based on the environment we grew up in. Will this all turn into a twisted way to kill off the poorer classes in our country? Not all of us are safe and warm and middle-class; some of us are exposed to the grittier side of life and will be more likely to turn towards drugs. Should there be no attempt to deter them?

Most people who commit suicide never /really/ wanted to commit suicide. Part of the motivation is the glory/drama of the act, another part is just plain old depression. But ultimately, most of these people don’t want to commit suicide, and they might be more likely to avoid that fate if they feel there is some legal imperative against it. Should a 14-year-old girl with bouncy hormones, faced with *****iness in school, etc. be given the legal go-ahead to commit suicide?

What age restrictions would there be on drugs?

omg donny. like the simpsons.
ive contemplated suicide, the act itself and the motivations (not offing myself personally)
and there are plenty of middle class people running around being vulnerable to drugs.

no no donny ive seen the free hugs people they look dirty.

How do you propose that suicide COULD be made illegal? I’m curious to know how to threaten a dead man.

Personally, if it were my duty to make suicide illegal, I would sentence family members and spouses to death for the criminal’s suicide.

There wouldn’t necessarily be penalties against someone who actually commits suicide…just the illusion of penalties. Even some suicidal people will think twice before breaking a law when they know their actions will hurt others in a legal sense. However, if people feel that they have the constitutional right to commit suicide, they would be more likely to do so. Countries with laxer laws on suicide tend to have higher suicide rates.

Of course, Winkism would say that suicide is bad, and the croc will be sent to eat your heart.

I don’t want to “cull the weak.” First off, who is “weak?” What I want is to restart the human race with a random sampling of the current population.

Also, not everyone has an ego. I’m not one of these people, but a peasant Vietnamese farmer who has never left more than a three mile radius of his home and lives with his entire extended family does not have an ego.

I’m no king. I’m a teenager who daydreams alot.

Attempting suicide is illegal. It actually makes a lot of economic sense to commit suicide. The government makes insurance companies pay out for suicide like they would if you died in a car crash.

Donny-why?

and suicide could be culled if there were more people willing to listen and not judge.

and i dont think your benefactors get money if it is suicide.

and have any of you tried to reason with a potentially relasping anorexic?
any advice would be fabulous.

Everyone does have an ego. Do you even know what an ego is? Ego is defined as “the sense of self”. Unless you’re part of a hive mind and incapable of the concept of the individual, you do have an ego. Do you believe that you are an independant entity that does not have to mimic the actions of the other 8 billion human beings? Then congratulations, you have an ego.

Don’t mess with me, b****. I have philosophy and the online dictionary.

You can’t punish suiciders’ family members as an incentive to not commit suicide. These people are committing suicide in the first place because they feel trapped/feed up with the world. This would only make them more depressed. Also, it’s most definitely unfair to the family members.

Suicide shouldn’t be illegal or legal. it should be something that I can do if I want to or don’t want to without the government telling me if it’s right or wrong, like getting a haircut. Everything doesn’t have to be legal or illegal, it can just be, you know?

Dude… We’re more than halfway to 500 pages! Just noticed.

Donny, it’s either legal or illegal. Usually a black and white dichotomy there.

Of course it would be unfair to punish family members; I never said that it would be fair. But it would work in some cases. It would stop some suicides, and that’s what the goal of it would be. What’s fairness in a time of war?

It’s one thing to give people freedoms…
…it’s another to give them license to do any goddamn stupid thing they want.

Their actions (whether it be doing drugs, committing suicide, etc.) don’t only affect themselves, but their family, their society, and the economy.

Good night. I’m going to bed.

EDIT: If it’s not illegal, it’s legal.

but donny’s example of haircuts is viable.
i dont think there is a law specifically saying it is legal but it is also not Illegal.
and donny may have an ego but he may not have it in the negative sense that most people take it. the word “ego” has a negative connotation by nature. if someone told me i had an ego i would take some offense even if said innocently.

porna, no need to be condescending.
Yes, I “even” know what an ego is, but the word also has the connotation of “superiority” and “pompousness.” For example, if I say, “Jenny has such an ego,” I’d be implying that Jenny is immodest and thinks highly of herself.

Speaking on this, have you read about the psychological concepts of the id, ego, and superego?

mls - seriously, anorexia is sick. its a disease. a person may think it makes her look better, but really anorexia people look like they came out of the holocaust. and your body deteriorates. when it doesn’t have enough nutrition, it conserves nutrition to maintain the vital functions : hair and skin - the two main factors of appearance deteriorate

i did in psych but only remember what they are supposed to represent vaguely. the ego is the mediator, the superego is good, and the id is all our naughty wants.
if incorrect please feel free to set me straight. i found it to be an interesting concept though.

all points ive hit repeatedly, but they are now considering becoming a fruitarian ( sp ).

Connotations are not viable in a court of law, or here. Unless they’re sexual.

I have heard them mentioned, but I’m not prepared to debate about them. If they were people, I couldn’t pick them out from a crowd of hobos.

for an example of no ego - read ayn rand’s Anthem
