wink: i take no offense, im enjoying discussion actually. i dont entirely disagree with you.

disney: ok yeah it does.

It’s shorter than saying someone-who-doesn’t-believe-in-a-supreme-higher-being, don’t-hold-it-against-him-crazy-religious-America.

touche Earilmadith

I do so love discussions like these. I think I always refresh at the wrong time, though. There’ll be three responses piled up and mine will be totally irrelevant by the time I post it.

I don’t believe in a supreme higher being or a God, but I still have a religion (Jainism – which specifically states that there is no God). Would that make me a theist or an atheist?

hudson (if directed at me): how strict i am really depends on the person asking the question i guess. but i guess i pretty straight forward cept on the gay marriage thing (ive sat through the “adam and eve not adam and steve” sermon but i personally dont agree). i was born into it but as ive gotten older ive departed from some things and kept others.

Atheist, I think. Isn’t it more of a cultural sect, then, not a religion?

Earilmadith: I completely feel the same way! I’ll take 2 minutes to post a reply and there will already be several stacked up!

Edit: In reply to your second question, I’ve always thought it was a religion because it does have a “heaven” analogy (Moksha), but it is very complicated and very different from the traditional idea of Heaven. Most sources I’ve checked consider Jainism a religion, but I may have to reevaluate that…

I don’t know Jainism, but it doesn’t believe in a god/higher force, it’s not really religion right?

An atheist. Atheism is about God/higher powers, not religion (at least in its etymological roots)

i’m supposedly Hindu
note the supposedly
I’d say I’m somewhere between athiest and agnostic

i think it can still be a religion even if they dont have a god. and i am also Jainism underinformed (if its a word) but dont sit around and try and define yourself wink.

So, is Confucianism a religion? You could say no, because it allows other religions to be practiced simultaneously. If Jainism says there’s no god, it kind of precludes other religions… Hmm.

I have to scamper off to dinner and get some food that’s not for thought. I’ll check in later.

So it is possible to be an atheist but religious at the same time. Interesting…

It’s the whole picking and choosing certain aspects of religions that I think about. I left my religion because I had to pick and choose to much for it to be sane to call myself a member. If you are picking and choosing, shouldn’t you look for a religion that fits your beliefs perfectly, and If no such one exists, create your own religion.

Winkism!

The rules:

 1. Wink will determine your fate based on whether or not she likes you. If she does, you will move on to the afterlife. If she doesn’t, a crocodile will eat your heart.
 2. No hitting, no stealing, no being mean, etc.
 3. Uh…that’s enough rules.

Any followers?

hudson: that is something to think about. but most of the things i dont agree with i simply chalk up to being outdated. (ideally my pastor would like girls to not wear pants : ? and stuff like that). and im pretty sure there isnt a religion that fits me perfectly, but at the same time i feel like it is a good enough match. all else fails id call myself an agnostic with church going tendencies.

You got me with the croc

Is that last sentence a Vonnegut quote, panicpower?

crocs in michigan??

and i dont think it is hudson.lol.
